Metroidvania is an outdated term now that these two games, Hollow Knight and Rabi-Ribi have become the new pillars and trend setters of the genre. I'm sorry but Metroid or Castlevania boomer games have aged badly

I cleared godmaster, the slow as frick traversal and poke jump poke combat have nonexistent variation, beyond looking pretty hollow knight has absolutely nothing going for it. you have shit taste and your thread will not last the night
Less is more in the case of hollow knight. Bosses are designed with those simple player mechanics and are allowed to go all out while also giving you some windows to do some cool shit. You won't find bosses as satisfying as pure vessel, Nightmare King Grimm or Sly to fight in any other metroidvania game. Rabi-Ribi fills a completely different niche, that great feeling of avoiding cool looking attack patterns like in your CC runs.

i just looked it up and there are 3 spells. 6 if you want to be dumb and count to obvious copy and paste upgrades. meanwhile in rabi ribi there are 6 unique ranged attacks both with a rapid fire and charge mechanic and this isn't counting all the extra hammer attacks and the bomb. and nail boy can swing forward and down. amazing.

Took you a lot of posts to admit you didn't play the game. You should try again. Some radiant fights do come close to the extreme levels of difficulty in Rabi Ribi and actually require you to use everything

my argument is that hollow knight is slow as frick and has mind-numbingly boring combat all the way through godmaster, and its upgrades do nothing to augment traversal in a meaningful way. it came out at the height the souls series’ popularity, when every game wanted to rip it off, and hollow knight is no exception. i’d rather play two hours of something like metroid dread’s buttery smooth movement and feel like I’ve accomplished something, rather than crawling back and forth across the absolute dogshit that is hallownest. search action gays always think bigger always means better, but reddit shite is the definition of bloat.

loved this game too. funny how it's both easy because of time stop but still hard when you want to try and not use it all the time
The enemies are not nearly varied enough. And sometimes timestop works really weirdly with knives. I remember struggling for a while because stuck-in-wall knives are picked up (and not tangible platforms) during stopped time for some reason.
I still don't get the hype for Hollow Knight. I dropped it after a few hours.

for some pantheon fights, specially all bindings, i straight up rarely ever use the normal slash over CAs and spells
Who the frick uses the nail techniques? They're slow as frick to use and it's a million times easier to just mash attack next to bosses since they hardly do anything anyways.
And spells are more or less just bonus damage since you can't spam them freely and if you're shit at the game you'd not use them in favor of having more healing.

The pantheon fights show more than anything that Hollow knight bosses are quantity > quality, They repeat all the 2 or 3 attacks unique to them that are piss easy to dodge and punish.

90% of radiant difficulty related seethe in bosses like markoth are not realising something can be trivialized by combat arts, for example
great slash and dash slash arent as good for dps but the mechanical utility is great, cyclone can still do great burst damage

frickhuge bonus damage that can very well outperform the nail, or if someone is bad at the game, can be made to increase the overall safety by a massive ammount so it still compensates them

its almost like they are more dynamic than the entire fricking genre. Its almost like theres absolutely zero other metroid-likes with bosses that compare with duels like pure vessel or even hornet 2. Its almost like there are several bosses with vast movesets that are mixed in with the not-so-cool half because said half isnt a major boss, but are still more interactive than anything in the genre anyway
But no, people will find a way to whine about anything in this board. Several of the best bosses in the genre? nah theres 60 of them so its all quantity over quality. Huge map filled with great rewards, quests and non-linear progression where the meme rewards like rotten eggs and grubs account for only 1/50 of the playtime? nah its too many dozen hours long so its bloated.

I don't get the massive butthurt any sort of positivity towards HK generates here. Sure, if you played through all the metroidvanias under the sun before, there is nothing new for you to see, but it all comes together really well. And if you want to compare it to the classics, you gotta have really selective memory about the depth of mechanics there. Unless you wanna tell me that crouching attacks are still an integral of igavanias, and not a legacy of classicvanias? Do you miss fightan special inputs on spells and weapons?
I just find it pathetic that every other mention of HK is followed by "reddit knight" instead of a coherent point. The movement feels too slow, the style is too cute, the enemies are too simple — these things are understandable, but such fundamental dealbreakers that there's even less reason to argue than usual. So starts the song and dance of "underage"-"filtered"-"shill".
