Ultimate desperately needs personalities. Samsora, Nairo, and Ally were far ahead of the curve.
Yeah, the only current interesting Ultimate personalities are Marss (who just gave up to become a streamer), Dabuz (who jobs every GF and only plays slow characters), Void (who plays other games) and Light (who doesn't win anymore). Acola seems like a nice kid but he's a generic boring polite Japanese fella, sparg0 is a boring choking kpop sperg, and everyone else in top 10-15 is so boring that they don't deserve mention.

It's crazy to me that Sonic players do all this shit for a game that doesn't even have good prizes. I guess I'd get it if we had Capcom Cup million dollar prizes, but they're just making sure no one has fun in a party game for no reason.

This game will just never be a real esport as long as steve and sonic are here. I can't think of anything that drains the hype more than seeing one of these campy morons. The crowd is fricking EMPTY. Nobody fricking cares, nobody wants to watch this shit.
I don't even think the people playing them even like using them but do so as its the easiest/only way they can hope to get results.
Say what you want about Sonic, but you can't get easy wins with Sonic in Ultimate.

Big House is just a bad showing for Ultimate. A lot of top players dropped out because A) This tournament was the weekend between two other big weekend tournaments and B) The Big House gets a bad rep with the scene outside of Melee because the other games featured get treated poorly by the TOs. These two reasons combined caused a lot of players to drop out of the event.
Ultimate is still in a downhill state. The two top players shaping up are from Japan (Acola and Miya) and they play Steve and Game n' Watch. Mkleo continues to deflate in his placements, Spargo is cracking under pressure. Meanwhile, the rest of NA is jobbing, and no one is biting the bullet to play Steve. Minecraft guy has shaped up to be a top tier with the likeability of Melee Jigglypuff. Also it doesn't help that competitive Smash was mauled by the Smash World Tour being taken down, and more and more tournaments are folding due to the economy flat-lining as well.
I'd argue Ultimate is more interesting than ever. Japan is back on the map. Gluto is back to being a top 8 threat. MK Leo no longer has free reign over Majors.

I find it funny that Steve is such a strong character but majority of players refuse to pick him up. I think a lot of it is the aesthetic. Steve is funny block man character, an archetype that at worst should be on the level of Duck hunt, and at best, should've been at the level of Pacman. He is not the face a competitive game wants as their top tier. At least previous games (sans maybe 64) had all top tiers that looked flashy and had a sort of cool aspect of them. If Steve was somehow a character like Joker, MetaKnight, Cloud, or Fox, people would be a lot more accepting of him and more players would be playing him. Instead, you only get the sweatiest of players actually playing him that want to win. Acola did not have much success until he picked up the Season 2 DLC chars. Onin was a Robin player only PR'd 14th in his region before he picked up Steve. Steve's case is closest related to Bayonetta, a pretty despised character at the end of 4, but even players like Tweek eventually picked her up. Hell, before her, Cloud would've been the best character in the game, and the joke back in the day was everyone had a pocket Cloud, but at least Cloud was more well received. Steve I don't see being that character. Maybe if Steve comes back in the game, where they will most likely gut him, will he get another chance of being more accepted when he is no longer top tier (Look at a character like Jigglypuff in Ultimate that gets big applause since she is mid tier at best, or even Bayo in Ultimate gets more crowds behind her now that her moves don't autowin her games).
Onin wasn't good before Steve, but Acola was known for being a wifi monster in Japan. Acola was one of the highest ranked wifi players in Japan.
Top players don't want to pickup Steve because he isn't the far and away best character in the game. Also Steve has a weird play style. Believe it or not, Steve isn't a pick up and play character.
What are the chances Ultimate will receive a patch for Switch 2 that nerfs Steve?
