The Brazilian gaming scene seems so weird. Most people grew up with a bootleg Sega Genesis, they unironically have nostalgia for the Zeebo and it seems every obscure fighting game is being kept alive solely because of some autist in a favela.

And yet, they have no games. Kind of odd, honestly.

Got some stuff wrong anon, the bootleg consoles were based on the nes, not the genesis, sega was the first console manufacturer to come to Brasil, first with the Master system and then the Genesis, Nintendo only came to Brasil once the snes released. I have never seen anyone with nostalgia over the zeebo here. Last one is true. We do in fact have games but only indie games really, here are some of them

Add the fact that São Paulo is the biggest city of the country and it's the largest economy in all LATAM so they're very influential to the rest of the country and even brazilian culture as well.

And it goes both ways with how japanese descendants go back to japan since the 70s~80s and having influence over there.

Bullshit. No one even remembers the fricking Zeebo. It's a meme. Most people had a Genesis or a SNES in the 90's, poorgays had a Dynavision (bootleg NES) or no videogames at all. The only weird thing about Brazil is how TopGear became a hit here, and the Peruvian bootleg International Super Star Soccer on SNES with Brazilian teams. We also had access to a lot of Japanese games, I remember renting Mickey and Donald 3 for SNES, that game was also the shit at the time.

I wonder if that’s why there’s always some many Portuguese language comments on Bomberman osts on YouTube. You occasionally get some Japanese and English comments too, but at least half are always Portuguese.
I wonder if Brazilians had access to Super Bomberman 3-5 somehow. Was Bomberman fairly popular there in the 90’s?

        >I wonder if Brazilians had access to Super Bomberman 3-5 somehow
We did. 5 is absolute Kino. One of my favorite games from this era.

          Anonymous

Yeah. Not a 90’s kid and not Brazilian, but I played all the Super Bomberman games online when Flash was still a thing, and they were all great. I personally liked 2 the most, but each game had its own uniqueness that made them fun.
5’s music was quite unique. I hated the stupid dog who was the first boss of the game. What made Hudson think to make the first boss fight so hard. Especially with the freaking mines.

            Anonymous

The dog was kino. Everyone hating on it was part of the fun. Kids would get together and strategize a way to kill him, I can still listen to the soundtrack, that bgm that sounded like a whistle. I know it plays in every boss fight, but it's definetly "dog's theme" lol.

Japanese and Chinese exclusive retro games were awfully popular here, yeah. Having access to the real console was a luxury so most kids grew up with bootleg consoles and emulation. Like, my childhood NES games aren't even Mario or Zelda but Field Combat, Battle City, Legend of Cage, Circus Charlie, etc. You'll notice that some of them pop up in 1000 in 1 type bootlegs a lot.

My friend at my university, a bit older than I am, played the shit out of Bomberman when he was younger. In the last days of classes in the end of 2023 we played 4-player Bomberman 1 and 4. So I guess it is popular.

Guys, I want to know. I was looking at Brasil's copyright law recently, because I was wondering if Emulators are legal here. Didn't find anything that would rule them out, but creating a personal copy of a game technically would be in violation of Copyright Law, since the law states only "small parts" of a work (they make an exception to plastic arts, but not computer software) can be copied. Can anyone who has some knowledge about the matter confirm what I'm saying?

Yeah OP don't know what he is talking about, was a pretty normal gaming scene, except for a smaller adoption of RPGs or any complicated games because of the language barrier, nobody cares or cared for the Zeebo israeli scam console at the time.
We had generic NES consoles, and a pretty good translated gaming library for the SEGA/TecToy partnership, i don't know what this gay getting this from, but the government being a troll, everybody is politically moron and illiterate, left and right, and overtaxing is true though.

Growing up with gaming in Brazil in the 90's was the best thing I could ever hope for imo. I got to experience old consoles growing up like my dad's old Atari 2600 and pretty much everything inbetween all the way up to the PS1/n64(then I moved to PC). I got to experience old arcade machines in the neighbourhood bars. I got to experience the cool arcades in the shopping malls. I got to experience renting video games and later going to the renting stores to play on their consoles with friends and randoms kids playing multiplayer games. Widespread piracy allowed us to play hundreds of games for cheap. I got to experience the whole Lan House fever, playing Counter Strike, Warcraft 3, Mu Online and other mmorpgs all day and sometimes even overnights with all the kids in the neighbourhood, everybody referring to each other by their cool nicknames and shit, man do I miss Lan Houses.

After that I don't think our experience differs much from other countries. Sure the favela kids are probably still playing some crappy PS2 gta mods but most of the middle class are playing all the current games on steam, mobile and a small portion on the overpriced af consoles.

The frick are you talking about?

People had bootleg nes/snes consoles. Not Genesis.

Brazilians grew up with the Playstation 2. It is the most quintessential country-defining console experience by far, still present even today.

A significant number of Brazilians also had Nintendo consoles.

Back in the 2010s it was common to see the Xbox 360. Not so much nowadays.

Brazil also has significant presence in the secondary MMO market. Tibia, Ragnarok, Grand Chase, Lunia, Perfect World, Mu Online, the list goes on. Brazil had immense population in all these games and some of them still host Brazilian servers to this day.

I mean a cheap PC plays all PS4 and PS5 games so any PS post-PS3 is redundant. modern consoles are useless, specially now that hacking them is impossible.

PS4/PS5 can be hacked, but our used market for these consoles is also big. People basically trade games or sell when they beat them. There's even shared accounts schemes.

I have seen used shit being sold for more money than brand-new. Every thing I ever sold used was at most half of the price of what a brand new unit would be and even then I still thought it was too much.

They are more efficient than Xeons but have you seen how cheap they are? It's worth it for a poorgay build where every penny maters. For you the difference will be just a few dollars, but here it'll be like 1/10 of a minimum wage.

Still not negligible. But they can afford local prices just fine so no need to settle for extreme poorgay builds like that. Imports are still much cheaper, however. People still used to buy CPUs like midrange Ryzen from Aliexpress before they implemented the new tax since it would be 30-40% cheaper than national prices.

And I still doubt it. There's a reason a lot of companies didn't bother updating their prices after Steam raised the minimum recommended. Check Steamdb. I'm still mad Warner did it the day I was going to buy Batman Arkham Asylum and I just pirated the entire franchise out of spite.

Man, imagine a timeline where Nintendo did their own version of Steam but for console back in 2007. Imagine having regional prices for bing bing wahoo and retro games. It really sucks how many companies don't see the value of regional prices.

The SEGA consoles were favored by poor kids so most kids had more contact with Sonic than Mario/Nintendo games in general. Similarly, the Dreamcast at the time was way more popular than the 64. I guess Sonic is slightly more popular here than in the US like how some Shonen anime like Dragon Ball Z are more popular here.

No one is too poor for vidya, people are just moronic.

Every gamer Brazilian with 2 neurons saved money for years until they could afford a great gaming PC. Then they enjoyed 10 years of gaming by pirating every game ever and only buying 1 or 2 games every year that have worthwhile online functions.

The problem is that the people with 2 neurons are only like 2% of the population. The other 98% are too stupid to figure out how to pirate something.

Literature: you can easily pirate any book ever, if it's an academic book you can get it for free from any university's library, but morons like

Haddad's tax increases are, too, a necessary evil. You ignore that Bolsonaro himself raised taxes in the last year of his term because he KNEW it was necessary and, if he didn't do that, he could be liable for responsibility crimes.

Unfortunately you are so moronic that you can't even sit with the grown-ups and discuss this subject. It is a shame. I wish there was a way to enlighten people like you; bring light into darkness, allow you to understand why politicians sometimes make your situation momentarily worse to avoid having this shithole crash completely. But you will never understand. And it is fine. To me, it doesn't matter. I don't fret because my dog can't understand economics. So I won't fret because a monkey like you also can't understand it. Keep doing your thing and chimping out.

Don't worry, after the tax reform digital stores will also pay the same taxes as physical stores. :^)

can you tell me a single instance of Lule cutting government costs and expeditures? Yes I know he slashed some education and health stuff, but not the actual government expenses

Because the Executive Government already operates under optimal expenditure conditions. Yet we are still going bankrupt because of expenses that the president does not have the power to cut.

Let me give you an example. Look at the budget of the average public university. ~93% of it (yes that's the actual number) will be reserved for salaries, only 7% is up to their discretion.

And the worst part? Over 50% of these ~93% is for retired public workers.

These salaries are untouchable. They have constitutional immunity. It is practically impossible to solve this in the short term. With a large enough reform you could reduce the damage in the long term, but such reform is politically very hard to attain.

The politicians will eventually be forced to do such reform, but they will wait until the last second possible. Until then the government will raise taxes as much as possible because it is the easiest way to keep this shit afloat in the short term.

Actually, the tax reform is great. It is implementing the same logic under which 99% of the planet operates. It's just that Brazil has an extraordinarily moronic system, and Brazilians grew accustomed to it.

It is NOT normal that, depending on how you classify your product, you can pay more or less taxes. For example, Sonho de Valsa used to be a "bombom", now it's a "waffer" because "waffers" are taxed less. Surely you see how moronic this is.

Similarly, it is NOT normal that digital stores don't pay taxes just because our taxation law is so old that it didn't foresee digital stores being a thing. It is unfair for physical stores to pay taxes when their digital competitors are not paying any.

The tax reform will make everyone pay the same tax. It doesn't matter if you are physical or digital; if you sell car tires, waffers, games or beewax. Everyone will pay e.g. 25% in taxes, period. That's how it works in Europe.

This is going to be great for the economy, anon. You have no idea how many investors refrain from coming to Brazil because of our moronic tax law. Now we will be operating under the same rules as everywhere else in the world.

sounds kind of good but if the tax is more than 10% it'll be ubershit.

25% is not a lot, but it depends on the industry. You are probably used to lots of digital services that pay 0% like Uber, Netflix and Steam. In these cases yes, the 25% will hit like a truck.

But there are also many industries paying way more than 25%, like the car industry. For these you will see a price decrease.

but that is what i mean. like yeah some industries will take advantage of that but I do feel like we there will be more cons than pros, which is why i think 15% to 20% would have been better.

They can't choose an arbitrary number and run with it. They ran several simulations and looked for the number that would bring us to the same balance we have today. Meaning if you make it less than 25% we will be in a deficit, if you make it more than 25% the government will be turning in a profit which is not the point of the tax reform, it's not meant to decrease nor increase taxes, just change the way you pay them.

                Anonymous

These simulations are made by economic experts, universities and civil institutes. Anyone can get the data and make their own simulation, even you. With a simple Google you can find dozens of simulations. Most of them actually found that 25% is too little and will surely lead into a deficit, the prediction of most experts is that the actual IVA will be between 27% and 30%.

By the way we have been running said simulations ever since 1990 when they started discussing this tax reform.
                >DO we even have access to those "simulations"?

                nta but it already is
and it wont even be 25% taxes, because we are fricked, it will be more because:

                original price: 100 reais -> 25% -> 25 in taxes
                new price: 125 reais
                25% of 125: 31.25
                new price: 131.25
                25% of 131.25: 32.8
                new price: 132.8

33% tax, if all the tax is transferred onto the customer, in this scenario

taxation and other forms of protectionism only work if the government also invest in the local industrial complex. Brazil doens't do this. I live in the South. It's pretty comfy. Pretty similar to living in Europe, even the architecture. I'm a lawyer and every year I receive dozens of new clients that are Europeans want to move to Southern cities and set up restaurants with their country's culinary. I always try to convince the Brits to not do this because no one is interested in what they ""cook"", but alas.

I think Americans and other Euros should move to east europe instead of latin america. the 2nd world is just the 3rd world but with humans and attractive women

You are right in general. It's just that Brazil's three southern states are an exception to the rule. Their quality of life index surpasses that of many European cities. 90% white, tons of beautiful women, there's jobs everywhere, and super safe. The rest of the country also hates these states because they are "too racist and right-wing". In turn, we receive a large influx of European immigrants every year. I think we are headed to a good direction.

You can own guns if you keep them in your house. You can't carry them without a special permit that is rarely granted without a pressing need. You also need to report to the government what guns you need and request permission to buy new guns (though this permission is always granted without problems assuming you don't have criminal history).

You can't homeschool, period. It is illegal.

You can't deny the holocaust. Hate speech is a crime.

Everything you seek is available in the US, anon.

Brazil would need to improve their trade with other Latin American countries, possibly with Arab countries and China.

Good luck with that. Most people here are US wienersuckers. They only want to trade with the one country that fricks over us consistently. Hollywood has such a tight grip over Brazil's culture it is sad.

Yes and we will be exporting even more after the reform. Thoughever I think China might eventually turn into an imperialistic and oppressive country just like the US, so this might bite us in the ass later. It would be better to trade with other Latin countries and build a solid Latin economic block. But how will we do that if we eat up every single anti-Latin narrative that the US throws in our direction?

The average Brazilian passionately hates Venezuela purely because of ideological reasons ("muh socialism"). Monkeys don't understand that it doesn't matter if Venezuela is socialistic, communistic or whatever, they are our fricking neighbors and we need to trade with them regardless of what their believe in.

During the pandemic one of the states that neighbors Venezuela was lacking in oxygen. Our federal government (under Bolsonaro) did not give a single frick. Venezuela immediately sent trucks carrying oxygen to the hospitals that lacked it, and they did it without any official request. You know what happened? Brazilian right-wingers started protesting it and demanding the hospitals did not use the dirty commie oxygen. I wish I was joking.

For the record Brazil and Venezuela have ZERO history together, we never fought in a war or anything, the hate is 100% ideological.

                Partially true.

Yes, Venezuela did send oxygen without request:
                https://www.cnnbrasil.com.br/internacional/venezuela-confirma-chegada-de-5-caminhoes-de-oxigenio-do-pais-a-manaus/

But the local population received these trucks with intense celebration. Which is only natural, their loved ones were dying, and these trucks brought salvation.

There was a lot of hate and protests online, mainly because Venezuela made Bolsonaro look bad (he was the one who was supposed to send oxygen).

I added Cuba's for the sake of illustration, since one of the most common bits of fearmongering surrouding Lula is that he'll make us poorer than Cuba (meanwhile, it was the right who did that, and 3 times, no less). This isn't so much a credit to him but a condemnation of our abyssally terrible ruling classes, that even Lula's mediocrity was a golden age compared to the aggressive and even deliberate awfulness of everyone to the right of him. I sicnerely advise you to not trust the word of any who tells you Lula sucks, because that person either cannot judge elementary facts, or they're trying to manipulate you.

The "bundas commodities" is an old anti-Lula cope. The world has been in another such boom since 2021, yet only when Lula came back into power in 2023 did the country gain anything from it. In 2021-2022, latifundio scum were just using this to line their pockets with zero benefit for anyone else. These obscene prices you were paying for onions cooking oil and oil-derived fuels, products we make in absurd quantities? That was Bozo and his cronies squeezing you dry even during a commodities boom.

Dilma screwed up the exchange rate, but the internal economy stayed decent until 2014. Pic related, our GDP per capita em huebux. Take a fricking guess which AnTiCoRrUpTiOn CaMpAiGn began in that year and sent the country into a recession which lasted near an entire decade.

          >he is just as incompetent as bolsonaro
He was literally the most competent leader this blighted land has ever had. Pic related, our GDP per capita in dollars. I sicnerely advise you to not trust the word of any who tells you Lula sucks, because that person either cannot judge elementary facts, or they're trying to manipulate you.

          >lula
He did frick all, it was literally the commodities boom. Actually we didn't grow nearly as much as we could since we were burning out money left and right on ineffective social programs and corruption scandals like Mensalão and Petrolão.

Not really. Brazil is unironically still OFFICIALLY producing SEGA 8-16bits consoles. TecToy was SEGA's partner company in the manufacturing of SEGA consoles in Brazil, but TecToy still have the licenses to produce SEGA consoles to this day, and they are still doing it.

We didn't have bootlegged Sega Genesis, all Sega brazilian videogames were manufactured locally by Tec-Toy, a company licensed by Sega and the videogames were basically the same. Same thing with the Super Nintendo, made licensed by Nintendo by a local company called Playtronic.

The ones that were bootlegged were the Atari 2600 (Dactar) and, especially, the NES (Dynavision, Phantom System, Top Game and more).

Poorgays never had anything to lose so they don't care anyway, and the top 1% don't care the same way because they have too much. Now, the middle class, they are the ones who have been constantly losing from all sides: they suffer with the violence, they pay more taxes, they are seeing their money losing value non-stop.

Every revolutionary movement in this country was crushed without chance and every political event was highly controlled to preserve status quo as much as possible

I always think about how Brazilians are useless...
Games have always been extremely popular in Brazil, Mega Drive (Genesis) and Master System in the 80s and 90s dominated the market due to the huge investment from Tec Toy...
And to think that at that time when Brazilians loved games, for example, Poland was closed to communism...
Today Poland produces great games and Brazil just consumes without producing anything, with a typical colonial mentality.

Children who grew up playing video games in the 80s and 90s became adults who only knew how to buy games made by foreigners (including games produced by Poles as I mentioned), without ever having learned how to produce their own games, even with so many advantages they had in all these decades that other people did not have.

The sega consoles were mostly original (megadrive and master system) made by tectoy, a sega-licensed company that brought their shit overseas. There were a bunch of fakes with games pre-installed, but the majority of Sega consoles were original genesis or MS.
Nintendo consoles on the other hand, had a bunch of fake NES/SNES clones. But plenty of people had original SNES consoles by playtronic (the nintendo equivalent of tectoy in Brazil).

No one has nostalgia for the zeebo because no one bought it. It's literally just a mobile cpu inside a case with a controller that ran mobile games adapted for a console context. No one cares about it, just clueless NA youtubers.

Fighting games were always popular here. Plenty of arcades still working to this day, we have releases that didn't even make it to NA and EU.

In addition to having an age range limit.

Brazilians who know English are basically limited to those who spent their childhood and youth during the 90s and first half of the 2000s, and learned the language playing games in English.

Those who either grew up before this period or after, do not know English and would hardly be able to participate in a community like this one here.

I miss these days like you wouldn't believe. Part of what I loved about the Mega Drive: unlike the Master System, of which pretty much all games were all from the official BR distributor and thus were much more straightforward and all in English or Portuguese, MD had a shitload of smuggled Japanese carts flying around. A lot of variety in styles and gameplay, and all these exotic moonrunes and weird cultural references which blew my infant mind. And always the dread that a cart would be region-locked...
