I know almost nothing about it except it's an alternate world and everyone's names are scrambled so Asriel is in your party as Ralsei. and it maybe looks like a more traditional JRPG?
Do your items/levels preserve between "chapters"?
Each chapter is nearly the size of undertale and has its own self contained plot, but there is also an overarching plot and your inventory and some minor choices do carry over

Yeah, but in the same way hl2 ep 1 and 2 are complete experiences. They're both decently long and have good endings, but the plot is by no means resolved and it probably won't be for years.

Ralsei isn't Asriel, he is just a new character who resembles Asriel.
The real Asriel is an adult in college who is expected to visit later but has not appeared yet.

The good news is that chapters 3 and 4 will probably release later this year or early 2025. Now would be a good time to play ch1 and 2 so you get hyped

Toby Fox comes from Homestuck (reminder that Megalovania appeared in Homestuck before Undertale) and a lot of people were interested in it from the Kickstarter announcement because of that. It's the equivalent of being born to rich parents, the game would have still failed if it was shit but it had an advantage over other games that let it start snowballing into popularity
I'm sure more people do know about Undertale than Homestuck at this point given the relative recency of the former and how hard the latter poisoned its own well, but the reason Undertale got its foot in the door was Homestuck fans. Back in the early 2010s I had a good number of Homestuck fans in my friend group even if I also never touched it, it had a definite reach among the proto-tumblrites. Those people funded and paid attention to Undertale, then when it released and was good they spread the word to people who also spread the word to their friend groups etc.
Anecdotally, I had literally never heard of Undertale until the day it released and someone made a Ganker thread with a MEGA link to the game, saying to play it now and not to spoil yourself. Yes, I could have easily fallen for a lostboy.exe and it was stupid for me to download it I plowed through it in two nights and then passed it along to my own friend groups and sister. Word of mouth does a ton, and Undertale had a better-than-normal starting point because of the Homestuck connection
