            One of the problems with many Protestant American churches is that they really aren't biblically literate. America has cultivated anti-intellectualism for centuries, by nature of not having an aristocracy, formalized priest-class (like the UK's Lords Spiritual), and ostensibly being a democracy where everyone gets one vote. In its healthy form, this means people value the opinion of your average uneducated person and will judge his/her arguments based on merit. In its worst form, this means people simply hate those who are more educated without listening to them. It's part of why Americans generally have such a hard time accepting opinions from educated specialists and bureaucrats. The anti-intellectualism also impacts religion, heavily. Many American churches make a point of having pastors and preachers with no formal education. Rather than having attended seminary and developing a deep understanding of scripture, he will just be some guy that speaks well. So when challenging messages come up in scripture, like how there are hundreds of condemnations of the misuse and worship of wealth, they either skip them or give a heretical interpretation to placate their church body. Catholic churches are somewhat less susceptible to this because of their rigid hierarchy and formalized requirements for priests. The same is true of certain Protestant denominations, but most churches in the US do not have any such rigor or belong to a denomination at all.

        I live near this church. It's Prestonwood Baptist in Plano, TX (suburb in north Dallas). They embody most of the terrible problems with the current form of white protestant American Christianity. There are some good honest people that attend, but the place has been run by the mega-wealthy that attend it for years. Basically some rich people withhold their donations unless they get their way, and the church leadership caves every time because if the money ever stopped coming, they would have to massively downsize their campus and let staff go. This is the same church that scummy politicians "attend" as well. For how wealthy this church is, they do comparatively little to help the community around them. For example, I know of another much smaller church in the same city that has a clinic providing free healthcare (with actual real doctors and shit) to people, among other things.

          that's why I said the secular/agnostic zeitgeist and not the atheist zeitgeist. Yeah, lots of people will answer surveys with dumb vague answers like "uh yeah I think there's like something out there, man" but these same people don't go to church, they don't pray, they don't observe any christian rituals or traditions, or the rituals and traditions of any faith for that matter, and most importantly, they don't conform their actions to their religious beliefs. Their "religiosity" amounts to a superstition that there's a man in the sky who watches them sometimes, but they don't even care enough to try and please this thing.
          To actually be truly religious is to be the contrarian. It's fine to be like that, but don't stand on a mountain of fairweather believers and talk down to others when you could wake up one day and find yourself completely alone and getting talked down to by the atheists. Atheist fedoralords are a just a manifestation, albeit a very extreme one, of the current spiritual zeitgeist, they aren't a departure or a deviation from the normal in any way. Christians are a niche subculture that is divergent from the rest of society.
              In basically every setting I've been in in my life, school, university, work, around friends and family, etc., remarks from others expressing religious skepticism is somewhat common, and rarely gives anyone pause. Open shows of religiosity are usually dismissed or scoffed at.
              Basically, Steve from the office says "heh, christians are dumb," no one bats an eye. But someone brings up the bible and everyone looks at them side-eyed, even when those people are themselves christian. Nominally, anyway.

      I mean, in fairness, only 30% of american catholics go to church, and of those 30%, probably a fraction of those are kids. Contrast this to the fact that, except for homeschooling, every child in america is forced to attend public school. There's literally just more opportunities for predation to occur in schools than anywhere else.
