This. It's an R PEE GEE game. You're supposed to roll with what the dice decides. Reloading because a bad thing happened that messes up your dysfunctional min/max playstyle is antithetical to how RPG games are really supposed to be played. We all want our characters to be powerful and min/maxxing is fine, but when it becomes an obsession where the slightest bump sends you into savescumming, you have a problem.

        Anonymous

the dice roll mechanic is fricking stupid in this game from this perspective. it ruins the replay value because if you don't save scum the dice can decide for you that you don't get to play the game in a different way than last time.

It’s a ROLE PLAYING GAME commit to the role play. The game becomes fricking meaningless the second you start scumming saves because something didn’t go the way you wanted.
      >30 persuasion check
      >literally can't get it without a natural 20
Skill issue. You’re not going to persuade people to do difficult shit if you have no charisma and aren’t proficient. It’s pretty easy to convince shadowheart without cheating if you’re charismatic and have some inspiration. DC 30s are hard but completely doable.

I played on tactician on my first run and when Marcus showed up he aggro'd onto my party and Isobel just walked away safely and started killing the other demons with no issue until I killed Marcus and joined her in finishing the other enemies off. Not a single person in Last Light even died and I didn't even have to try. I've heard a lot of people complaining about this fight but I don't get it.

Isobel stayed and fought Marcus, but Marcus generally wasn't particularly dangerous and we got him before he did anything outrageous. I don't really get the complaints, maybe if you get really unlucky and Marcus crits her ass?

          Anonymous

I completely missed this fight because I somehow completely missed her at the inn while doing all the shadow curse stuff even to the point where I even found the Nightsong and was ready to take on Kethric without even seeing her. It was confusing seeing them talk about his undead daughter being there, but I thought that was literally meant to be those hundred whatever years ago until she just popped up.
I might not have even seen her at all in act 2 if I hadn't teleported to the inn first to try and pawn off some of the garbage I had in my inventory before fighting Moonrise.
The dialogue was my literal reaction
          >wait, just who are you?
When she randomly tries to talk to me.
Her and the Assimar are pretty obnoxious and after that intro to them I will not be speaking to them again by my own will.

Soo..? Reload then. Dice checks (especially with critical failures/success) will fail occasionally. A lot of people enjoy those train-wreck situations, but obviously not everyone. It makes the brain fight much easier, it did have an effect, you can even see the curse it put on it, the intensity is based on how many of those you grabbed prior, if you got all of them, it start with a quarter less health, -2 AC, and loses an bonus action.

That said I dislike they went with those house rules of critical success/failure happen outside of combat. It just encourages save scumming at best to not caring about rolls at worse.

Steam Reviews during 3 years of EA : 60k for 2 millions of confirmed sales.
Please note that a 1 review for 30 sales is a very good ratio, many games tend to be 1 for 50-100, EA backers tend to be very loyal reviewers.

Now, after 2+months of release ?
        >330k reviews
        >+450% review
At the barest minimum, the game has sold 10 million copies on Steam alone, and sold at least +450% after release by industry metric

The only sales figure we have is months old and it came from China where Larian's bulk of funding for BG3 originates. And relative to an alleged flop like Starfield, that has been confirmed to have sold well beyond BG3's numbers at the same time.

That's assuming any data out of China isn't embellished. Which is almost certainly not true.

Until patch 3 you could throw "can not be resurrected" dead followers into the mundane chest and when pulled out it would rest them before the script changed. It's how I kept a human Wyll, got his reward for killing Karlach, killed everyone at the grove and still had everyone for act2. After Patch 3 however they changed how corpses were treated sadly.

There’s a gate near there that leads into a house with cursed skulls. The quest with the skulls really should be entered from another door. The only time I experienced excruciating long enemy wait times was when I opened that gate and agroed those spirits.

The combat is good, for the most part, when the enemy to party ratio is relatively equal. When the game gives up and decides to have 4 enemies to every single party member, you just sit around waiting for ages and, fundamentally, swarms of enemies rarely makes for interesting or engaging combat in the first place. No act is actually exempt from this, but the deeper you get in, the more frequent this sort of encounter design becomes. Act 3 is a miserable gameplay experience at times.

Not gonna lie, I'm not a fan of the combat either. It's not that I am too dumb to get it, rather I'm not interested in investing energy into learning a system (5E) that I'll never use again after beating this game. It's like learning enough Spanish to pass a college course and never speaking the language once you do. What's the point?
I'll be the first to admit I was probably playing it "wrong" - I would send in my tank character from the front, try to flank with my rogue, have a healer hang back. Typical Fire Emblem/FF Tactics/Tactics Ogre/Disgaea/Shadow Tactics strategies, but for whatever reason it doesn't work in this game. You run out of moves way too quickly, so you always start strong then fizzle out. Most of the time my attacks have a ~60% chance to land, and when they do they do meager damage, whereas opponents (of which you're always outnumbered) hit more consistently and harder.
The games I mentioned earlier would balance around your characters having more HP/strength/whatever, it's like that's missing in BG.

Combat is about as difficult as learning any other combat based game. The filter is the first 4 levels because you don't have two actions, more options, and your caster has no stamina.

If someone wanted to ease into this, I'd recommended Monk/dual wield ranger/Wizard/free space.

Is there any reason to play wizard? Or sorcerer/warlock just outclass it because CHA is busted and INT is practically useless outside combat (i wish your INT was used more in conversations)

      Anonymous

      >Is there any reason to play wizard?
The Wizard schools and the ability to have all arcane spells in your spellbook so you can change them before every fight and also have unlimited rituals while also not losing a spell cast or a spellslot.

      Anonymous

Wizards can learn from scrolls and can also store spells for later, giving them more utility. Sorc/warlock only have the spells they have equipped and can only gain spells from levelling.

I mean yes? The school benefits, evocation not hitting allies, having x amount of guaranteed 18 rolls, double potion crafts etc.
And something like feather fall outside of combat not costing a spell slot so you can use it freely.
Like sure if you want to be a conversation homosexual cha is better, but if you want to do a playthrough where you just fight everything instead of using conversations to avoid it int is fine. The real difference is that it's much harder to boost int than it is str and cha, there's no potion of 23-27 int, there's no easy +2 int hat lying around

Anyone saying BG2 is awful is a contrarian. There are, however, some things BG3 does better. The combat system now allows you to examine enemies to check for weaknesses and resistances. In BG2 you had to play a guessing game when you fought things like liches and beholders, which was less than ideal. I also think the depiction of the Underdark is BG3 is far superior to the rather brown and bland zone we get in BG2.

BG2 and BG3 are running on different editions of D&D, it’s not a good comparison. I’d suggest maybe looking into Neverwinter Nights for comparison, since 5e, which BG3 uses, is most similar to 3e out of the older editions. If people are shitting on BG2 gameplay, it’s because they’re getting filtered by the quirks of AD&D.

Whenever my rogue is goes solo, gets caught pickpocketing and is beat into a downed state by the local townsfolk, the weakness of the game's law and order system becomes only too clear. It's stated in the rules that a downed character will die after three failed rolls, but for some reason, in this type of situation, when he's downed in a town area, he never fricking dies no matter how long I wait. That means I can't reset the hostile NPCs to their neutral state. You have to either 1) go in there with the rest of your party and lethally or non-lethally battle the NPCs, or 2) go to camp and do a short rest, which inexplicably heals the downed party member who is not in the camp. Neither of these feel like organic, immersive role-playing options. If you spend any amount of time committing crimes, you soon see just how "gamey" this part of the game is. I would even say that Oblivion deals with law and order in a more comprehensible and realistic way.

im doing my turns in literally 1 second - i just keep spamming the SMITE NUKE or FIREBALL AOE NUKE and then im forced to sit and do nothing for *insert number of minutes* while the enemy does his shit.

this is my first DND turn based game (i played RTWP NWN, IWD and BG for thousands of hours), and i fricking hate it.
    its horrible.

    this is not even "gameplay".
    its not even a game.
its literally TV - i just sit and watch.
i watch combat, or i watch cringe reddit cutscenes.

Baldurs Gate isnt a turn based franchise, thats all there is to say about it.
Larian is simply an incompetent company that can only do 1 thing: Divinity Original Sin.

Its like insisting the next Dawn of War game should be turn based, because Warhammer is a turn based game in real life.

No, frick off, Dawn of War is an RTS.
The same way Baldurs Gate is RTWP.
        Frick off.

        Bonus kek:

        every single one of them.

RTWP is a system where everything already is turn-based in 6-second rounds with initiative orders and everything, but also you can move everything around in real time. What sucks about it is how often what you see on the screen is irrelevant to the actions actually happening in the log. For example, if you move a character out of the way of an attack but the game already decided it was in range, you'll see the animations whiff but still take all the damage. It just turns into a mess of wasted inputs and feels awful and unresponsive most of the time. It's just the worst of both worlds.

Yeah, it's in the passage leading down to the boss room where the path splits into a side with a lot of traps and a side with an absolutely disgusting amount of traps. It's on the extra trappy bit.

If you don't get to the mushroom circles from Auntie Ethel's house, those same circles won't teleport you back to the house from the Underdark. Trust me, I've tried bypassing the dump traps and masked people myself in a previous run whilst metagaming out the ass. Larian was clever and thought of everything. You just get teleported to the area with the dumb girl's dead husband instead. And if you teleport back, it goes straight back to the Underdark.

So yeah, metagaming won't work in that particular instance.

i hate myself for save scumming so much. also my PC could just barely manage to run it so idk if it's just me or the load times are slow for everyone, but i wonder how much of my playtime was spent looking at the loading screen after getting triggered over rolling a 1 on an easy dialogue check.

        Anonymous

I have an SSD and every load screen is 5 seconds or less. If you don't have an SSD by now you should really get one, they've been affordable for like 10 years.

I play off a Seagate FireCuda 530 m.2 and the loading screens are never longer than 7-8 seconds on any transition.

Shit for real? I really don't know computers, or that a SSD was such a big deal. My loading took a good minute, and once I got to Baldur's Gate it took another minute for the structures in the world to pop in.
Maybe it's time I look up how tf you install a SSD.

            Anonymous

If you get a 2.5-inch SATA SSD it's literally the same as installing a SATA platter drive, and yes the differences are that stark. My loading screens are under 10 seconds and there's no pop in after that, everything is already loaded and ready.

not every dice roll, but if a quest comes down to some super important roll, then yeah i'm save scumming. realistically i'm never doing a second playthrough (at least not for a few years) and it seems like a massive waste of time for a quest i've sunk like 4 hours into to get invalidated by one lame dice roll. if it's some small quest i don't give a frick about, i'll just let whatever happen but if it's something for a party member quest then i'm not leaving that up to chance. of course i'm swimming in so much inspiration that i rarely even need to savescum anyway, can usually just burn one or two of those on rerolls to get what i wanted

Not him, but the writing. If you haven't reached act 2 yet, you'll notice how bad it gets once the plot actually starts to move.

Beat the game yesterday. Game honestly got better overall. Act 3>1>2 for me, and I still really loved act 2, it just lacked the variety of Act 1 and 3 (doing mountain in Act 2 helped tho). The final dungeon/final battle was great.

I thought act 2 had the more engaging plot than act 1 (which I already thought was great).
Just started act 3 and so far I found it to be engaging as well. I Haven't come across this drastic quality drop that anons have been claiming there is.
I was willing to believe the claims because frontloaded games are larian'd specialty, but I'm just not seeing it yet with BG3.

The game's story is so bad by the end that the epilogue tells you that it was stupid and made no sense.

The writing definitely takes a hit during Act 2. That's when you notice some wokeism, some plot holes, some purposefully ambiguous dialogue that would not have been left ambiguous that would have probably solved many problems in Act 3 (Odd that Vlaakith just HAPPENS to refer to the intruder in the prism as "them" or "they" instead of the proper "he" or "him." Almost as if it's a very contrived and haphazard way to cover up a plot twist you only plan to reveal much later)

Don't even get me started on the absolute inanity of the fact that letting Shadowheart stab Aylin somehow dooms Last Light Inn. Seriously, why can't I at least do that without genociding harpers and tieflings?

vlaakith was referring to Orpheus actually, there's nothing indicating her foreknowledge of The Emperor iirc.

modern day social politics don't exist in faerun, imo this is just projecting. vlaakith has plenty of well explained reasons for not revealing who it is she wants killed. she states she doesn't even want us talking to the "intruder" barring some unforeseen circumstance resulting in you leaving the creche alive. the bit about last light is ridiculous, it would be more ridiculous for last light NOT to get butchered because Aylin gets murked... because... isobel.... channels the blessing of selune... that's true. idk if it was an intentional withholding of information on that specific front anyway. imo this is more hyper fixation, even her enunciation has a very strange inflection pattern so it's hard to determine what it is exactly she's trying to do all the time.

Vlaakith uses they/them because she doesn't want anyone to know that she knows Orpheus is in there. That's who she wants you to kill, but she also wants to play dumb and act like she has no idea who it is for plausible deniability regarding the ruse she's pulling on all githyanki. It just so happens that this works to make the player think she's talking about the Dream Visitor, who the player knows could be either male or female based on your own choices. It's basically just everyone talking past each other: You only know about the Dream Visitor, Vlaakith only knows about Orpheus, and neither side ever bothers to clarify that communication because there seems to be no reason to do so.

My biggest complaints are that tactician difficulty feels about as challenging as the normal difficulty in D:OS 1 and 2, and that there are extremely few uniquely-constructed combat encounters. It's generally just "kill this evenly-dispersed group of humanoid baddies." I haven't played it in a while, but D:OS1 on tactician actually changed up the layout, abilities, and types of enemies rather than changing some numbers, and felt like it had a lot more variety in encounter design.
Also the AI pathfinding is really crap and annoying.

I'm always let down by these games in length and breadth. It just seems crazy to me it took half a decade to make BG3 when it's not very long at all. So there's no more 'maybe they'll release new modules' like 20 years ago because it would take another half decade and if it's going to take that long just make another title to charge full price.

Well I'm on my first run and made it to act 3, and got to a point where I made a deal with one of the main bad guys.

My experience with the game is mostly positive. Never touched 5th edition, so it's fun to learn how it works in itself.
The game lets you handle situations in multiple creative ways, and you can respec your character freely.

Sadly the woke vibe, while not overbearing, is everpresent in the game, and it kinda kills the mood.
The setting is way too gynocentric with female leaders everywhere, and the excess of "diversity" + modern way of speech kills the suspension of disbelief.

From a pure gameplay standpoint, I'd say inventory management and camera work annoyed me the most. I can't seem to get fully comfortable with the interface.

yep, almost every non-party member who the game wants to seem cool or badass is a (usually smug rather than badass) woman
maybe i'm biased and misremembering, but i swear if you took every line of dialogue that involves a character's sexuality, well over half of them are gay

and for bugs, I had the game close up on me a few times, and I experience a lot of slowdowns in act III due to the amount of NPC's around. But that can be blamed on my old computer I guess.

The combat is ok at its core but the game fricking sucks at properly going through the flow of combat, making it a complete slog to sit through outside of fights in the intro where there's only one or two, maybe three, enemies to fight.
    >attack enemy
    >the game hangs on this for some reason, 5 seconds later the attack finally goes through and the enemy takes damage along with the recoil animation from getting hit
    >enemy's turn
    >they activate dash, sit there for 4 seconds, move, sit still for a few more seconds, then do an attack that hangs again for 5 seconds before the game registers everything
    >this happens 6 more times because there's six more enemies before my team can act again
This happens at least one every single combat encounter. In this regard, the combat is absolute dogshit. Everything takes far too long to go through an di just end up alt tabbing out of the game when my turn is over in act 3 because of how fricking boring it is to wait for all of this to happen due to how many enemies you need to fight.

The only thing I really didn't like about the ending is Emperor doesn't have any unique dialogue or cutscene when you defeat him in the final battle. He was essentially the deauteragonist of the game and the narrative foil to Tav, with his own evil party of heroes for the last battle but he just gets swept aside like a common mook.

I don't know much about TTRPGs. I do know the DM can help you out or in general show flexibility in how to resolve encounters and quests. How this is implemented in BG3 feels too rigid for my casual ass. Call it skill issue if you want.

yeah in this game you have to burst down the bosses as soon as you can. alot of times, if you let them get off even one attack they could down multiple characters in one round. as you get higher in level this happens more often, you get barraged by lvl4+ spells all at once. last thing you need is some douchebag with fight ending AoEs.

You really want counterspell from the second half of Act II onwards. Its rare that you encounter a powerful spell before that, but when you do you need to be ready to shut that down.

I have 1 heavy armor (you see two heavy because I used mod to change the appearance), 2 medium and 1 pajama. Two have 21 AC and the other two 20 AC. Kind of pissed that my monk has to wear heavy armor. I really like the pajama look, but the stats are way too thin for companion. If it was my player character, I could have made it work.

The only way to see the cuck scene is to be playing as Dark Urge and personally initiate it. All the outrage has been people asking Shadowheart to cuck them and then getting mad when she agrees. If you don't bring it up yourself then it never comes up.

if you end the dialogue early, she won't say anything. If you simply pick

Shadowheart will say that she is ok with it, after the drows explain it. None of the options you've picked directly suggest that you want it, although i don't think that dialogues in this game are polished enough to analyze them to this extent

Okay, thats a solid point. Druid, yes, Halsin, no. Sounds good now?

I dunno, my friend's druid caster seemed pretty strong when we played. He was webbing and moonbeaming the snot out of basically everything in act 1.
I haven't used a druid personally to know, but it seems fine.
Personally would rather have a wizard, but I get it if you want more WIS instead of one of the smug ass CHA casters.

The strength of druid is the insane amount of summons. You get elemental, two minor elementals and class unique dryad. Then you turn yourself into a beastform and yeah its pretty strong, but also tedious to micromanage it all.

As far as casting goes, its definitively the weakest caster next to Cleric (except for Light cleric, aka the best cleric)

i made my avatar a druid, and while he himself is mostly useless, every fight is pretty much trivialized now that he has haste and i can just cast that on laezel who, with added bloodlust elixir, can just solo every encounter. also owl bear transformation is pretty good since the jump aoe is a bonus action and he can attack twice with claws. plus it's got 50 hp and if it dies i can just recast again next turn lel. almost everything else he has is shit, and despite having 20 wisdom my spell hit chance and damage feels extremely low

Haste is such a dumb fricking spell. They really need to nerf that shit. No more AC, no more double movement. You just get 1 (one) action per turn for 3 turns max. That action can be spell or one attack. No synergy with extra attack or any of that bullshit. There, still strong, but not trivializing the whole game.

I have Minthy as Sorc 8 / Pala 2 / Wizard 2. She can twin cast haste, has 21 AC when dual wielding (24 with shield) and +7 to constitution throwing save. I have used haste once with her so far and I will not be using it much if at all in the future.

haste can get dangerous with more adds.. especially if you don't sanctuary whoever is concentrating it. I tried to cheese the cazadpr fight with my hosted paladin, and they all instantly attack my haster, breaking concentration, leaving my pally lethargic, and destroyed the caster instantly. it can go wrong just as easily as it can go right.

Anon, I literally romanced Shadowheart and even got Halsin to the point where he tried to hit on me. I turned him down and then he never talked about it again and Shadowheart never talked about Halsin one time. Are people romancing and fricking both Shadowheart and Halsin to make this suggestion happen?

Firstly, you need to be a degenerate.
Secondly, you need a Sharran in your party.
Thirdly, you need The Druid in your party.
Accomplish all this and it might happen if you are dumb enough. Otherwise it is mere fiction.

the combat was the only interesting thing about the game and the fact that i had to go through story slop to get to it made me quit the game
i wish that you could just like take a generic quest to go kill goblins and get a random generated location with enemies that you can go fight without it being in the world state

So whatever stat has the * next to it determines hit chance for spells and attacks? like for Wyll, his Charisma affects hit chance and low int/wis/str/dex only matter for saving throws?

      Anonymous

      Kind of.

Int is garbage stat that you should have 8 or less unless its your spell casting attribute (wizard or shitty spellcasting fighter and thief subclasses).

Wis is super important for throwing saves

Con is super important for concentration (and it gives HP)

Dex gives you AC, determines your turn order and saves from AoE spells

STR makes you jump further and lets you push others further (and with higher chance). Also protects from getting pushed.

Cha is important for people to like you.

Combat is great even if it´s simplified and easy as frick. That said that´s hardly a problem with turn based gameplay itself. WoTR is also turn based and can be occasionally hard or unforgiving.

Just say you prefer RTwP, nobody will judge you (ok, that´s a lie, we will judge you but you are anonymous, you´ll be fine)

Is rolling a D20 really a good gameplay mechanic? It creates a weird distribution of events, where events that would usually only be 1% likely are made 5% likely. Sure, it's fun when you have a 5% chance of guessing your enemy's mother's name and getting them to have an existential crisis, but there is also a 5% chance of choking on your own tongue. Seems a bit silly.

well you're not just rolling flat d20. You are rolling with various advantages, and enemies also have stats. and in this game they give you the grace of inspiration, which allows you to reroll events.

thats why critical failure backfires are stupid and why rolling to confirm crits is a thing

      Anonymous

Yes, d20 is archaic and has a lot of problems because of how flat it is. As dice rolling goes, Xd6 is much more interesting because there are more dynamic distribution curves to manage and better ways to hedge against bad luck.

    >start game as anything but fighter
    >40% chance to hit on all attacks and spells
    >even if you do hit it’s like 1-6 damage

    >start game as fighter
    >80% or more chance to hit every attack
    >hits for 10-20 damage or something absurd

It’s all so tiring. I haven’t tried every class but I’ve tried 8 or so and this always happens, why is there such a massive disparity for level one characters? I’m distributing stats into the correct places but spells are always still shit, attacks aren’t likely to hit, etc. except for fighter which apparently just gets to face roll the whole game. They even give you easy access to a really strong weapon right in the intro.

yeah, but an early level spell (aside from cantrip) is pretty powerful. Sleep becomes pointless early, but also those first fights are auto win when you sleep the entire enemy party. But you can swap spells when you level. Also low level you want casters to have a crossbow.

you guys are keeping uo at least one form of BLESS or other attack bonus buffs during every fight right? phalar alluve sing ability + bless = an easy + 30% hit chance

        Anonymous

I prefer to use concentration on damaging spells like Spirit Guardians. 5e's concentration mechanics make me just ignore buffs completely. Also I set Phalar Aluve to shriek whenever I remember to use it because extra damage on the enemies around the wielder is a lot easier to manage than buffing my very spread out party that has multiple effective ranges.

Hunter's AoE is nice but I like chimping out throwing people. Sometimes, you can run into enemy archer shooting you from high ground but you can jump all the way up with Champion's Jump Boost and Athlete Feat then throw them from a cliff into others.
