I did on Quest 2 launch when there was zero mention of psvr 2 at PS5 showcase. Was obvious they were going to be a decade just to catch up. Their first step is their high end enterprise 4k per eye standalone?/wireless hmd. This gen will skip gaming obviously. Next gen they will try to get into XR out of necessity. But I k ew back then when they would release a psvr 2 it would just be an afterthought and I built my first pc in over a decade that week. Not even a huge Nintendo fan but at this point it seems like the best setup is PC + switch. Alot of their catalog is exclusive and the system itself is cheap. Even if you want to sit at a big screen playing high-spec games with a controller a PC makes more sense with big picture mode being a thing.
My guess is that Microsoft is going to go all in on PC, perhaps focusing on pre-builts instead of a dedicated console. Just focusing on software development makes more sense anyways, especially if there's even the slightest risk of a surge in Linux popularity. Perhaps in a few years Sony will go the same route. I don't see Nintendo following any time soon unless the deck really starts to explode.

Prebuilt, much cheaper than a full desktop setup, full capability + user friendly OS like the deck. There was no way for Microsoft to acquire over $80 billion worth of third party publishers, cut them off from their audience, put their games in a $15 subscription and make any ROI. The choice was either to bleed money for a decade until Xbox somehow picks up as brand or become a third- party publisher yourself.

They already tried that. It failed spectacularly. PC Marketspace also isn't going to be wild about a subscription service when a large majorty of them enjoy having the files easily accessible for modification. Game Pass on PC doesn't offer the flexibility with how Microsoft locks down the installs from their store. It's a pain in the ass. If the PC userbase wants a good deal, they'll buy a CD Key or steal it. Gamepass is a dead end on PC.

As a ps5 only gamer I have no issue with ditching exclusives, as it is I pretty much only play multiplats and see no reason you should be locked out of games by platform choice. I get that not all games port well from PC due to keybind complexity and that’s fine we don’t need every game just most is fine.

I think Microsoft could theoretically strongarm Sony into *streamlining* their games if they drop out of the "exclusive" market altogether with a strong hold on key developers. I don't know if it would work though, Microsoft has a bad track record on it. But even just dropping out alone forces Sony's hand a bit, if they decide not to play ball. I can’t see Sony being as welcome to Play Anywhere as MS, as it is they have been pretty selective and like delaying ports which is scummy. I'll put it this way: Satya Nadella has been avoiding having any Microsoft hardware or platforms since he took the reins. He killed the Windows phone, he killed the pixelsense/surface tablets, but he also started putting stuff like Office onto iOS or rebranding Edge as basically reskinned chrome.
The reality is I think he'd rather the Microsoft Gaming division have no dedicated hardware and just be a service that is sold on other people's hardware. He wants to divorce the company of as much risk as possible, and that means the risk of actually having to sell a physical product

The mainstream and casual audiences all moved to playstation last gen due to the lack of back-compat with 360/Xbone. But that means the remaining 20-30 million xbox gamers are die-hards, the kinds of people who REALLY care about exclusives (whereas casuals and mainstream gamers mostly care about multiplats).
The reality is these die-hard Xbox gamers are not neccesarily going to stay with Xbox no matter what, they stay because they believe Xbox does/can produce the best exclusives (or at least the exclusives they like the most).
If Xbox puts its exclusives on Playstation, these diehards are going to take notice and make be disillusioned enough to jump over. There is a real possibility that the Monthly-Active-Users on Xbox going from 20 million down to 5 million after this

I think when Microsoft started all these acqusitions they genuinely thought that they could build an exclusive first-party pipeline to rival Sony and bolster the Xbox brand. The issue is that it would take a whole generation for their efforts the bear fruit, meanwhile the investors want return on their $80 billion investment immediately. We also see Gamepass numbers hit a ceiling and Series consoles sales slowing hard.
Xbox made drastic moves in order to stay relevant but it came at the cost of a complete shift on the brand identity

I e been on PC as my primary device since like halfway through the seventh generation of video games. I have all three consoles from the most recent generation but with even most Sony exclusives being eventually ported to PC, I've forgone getting any consoles this generation, well at least until Nintendo makes the Switch 2 or whatever if that has something I want to play.
I am subbed to Game Pass but I did it by buying a bunch of cheap Xbox Gold cards, getting like 8 free months off of some activation bonus, then paying $15 to upgrade to Game Pass Ultimate or whatever. I paid like $120 or something like that and got almost three years worth, and I make use of it. I have both the Steam and Game Pass versions of Palworld installed to play with different friend groups.

Leaked details of the switch 2 put it at about 3tflops with DLSS, easily capable of running any PS5 game in decent (not as good as PS5) quality. Nintendo hasn't had a console that could run the third party games since the gamecube and that had awful sales so it was easy for third parties to skip it anyway. The switch 2 is both going to be strong enough to run the games and popular enough to draw third party interest.

The Wii was so popular that it either got miracle ports of games like CoD or it got its own versions of popular multiplat franchises, same with the DS.

Switch 2 will probably accelerate this a lot if it has DLSS to compensate for the visual cutbacks needed and an SSD to allow for enhanced asset streaming bandwidth and throughput
