YS only became good in the sixth generation and is a Japanese gem, but it was unplayable.

I only played Ys I, II, III, and the mid 2000s games.
They're okay but a bit repetitive. I had most fun with III.
What other games in the series should I play?

      >mid 2000s games
have you played ark of napishtim, origins, and oath in felghana?
8 is good, 9 is ok, 10 just came out in japan no western release yet. I actually recommend playing the dawn of ys if you like or don't mind bump combat.

        >ark of napishtim, origins, and oath in felghana
I think I played those 3. Or maybe I skipped Oath in Felghana, I have zero memories of this one in particular but they're always the same.
I'll look into Dawn of Ys, thanks. Any (english patched) version you'd recommend?

look for the english text and dub patch from, the text only patch doesn't translate the japanese voice overs and there is no accompanying text with the voice acting.

They're almost all at a minimum a good time. Only ones I didn't like were Mask of the Sun, and Ys V.

no shit. do you want a reward for figuring out that hudson was better than whatever no name dev made mask of the sun.

Yeah, I thought everyone fricking knew that already.
All the original Ys games were better on the Turbo Duo...

Hudson was a better fit for an outsourced Ys for sure.
But with Memories of Celceta being a thing that exists it's kinda moot now.

dawn is way better than modern falcom. the two cant even be compared.

I say more in a canon way. Falcom thinks of Memories of Celceta as the real Ys IV at this point.
Though that doesn't stop Hudson's Ys IV still being a still pretty good bump combat era game.

the dawn of ys has the best bump combat imo, and this is from someone who prefers the ark system

          >caring about continuity
whatever, the connections between the games are so thin and boil down to some references like "remember that character you saw in that game?".
It's not like you are only allowed to play one game between Dawn and Celceta anyway, you can consider Celceta the canon one and Dawn a fun what-if story.

I kinda wish falcom would outsource some of the development of modern ys to other companies, ys x looks promising but I imagine it would be way better if another company handled the combat and graphics

I mean I like that Ys games are still getting made and that Ys X is on the way but they just look like generic current time janky anime games made for Japanese teenagers at this point. Ys IX was full-on chuunibyou.
