The characters are effectively party members, but the combat system is a solo affair, so representing them as abilities lets you have a whole bunch of them without worrying about having to level them up or anything. In addition to their individual abilities, different combinations of characters gives you special combo abilities which can be unleashed as a sort of limit break. Naturally, the final battle giving you an All the Friends limit break will be a fun spectacle for the player.

I would recommend making some kind of explanation for when all his friends presumably die from old age (outside of the other dragons) due to his presumably now lengthened lifespan from his transformation. There is a real problem when your treasure, the thing that gives you power, isn't some concept or physical thing but a living being.
Unless the ending is him going on some permanent adventure to make friends forever and ever, I guess that could work.
The ending is the second half of the game, which involves now being able to challenge all the previous dragons but for realsies. There's too much going on with the plot to explain, but the original big bad was trying to prevent a greater evil from happening, which is now manifested and takes control of the main character. By the end of it, you directly control the butthole dragon who does a similar All the Friends thing but with the other dragons and the rest of your party, saving the original MC and effectively de-dragoning everyone.
