I don't have a switch and haven't actually played either one tbh
If I was going to emulate, which one should I start with? Kinda leaning towards Engage just based on the art style, but I'll hear arguments for either.
For reference: My entry point was FE7, and the GBA titles are still my guilty pleasure favorites, despite their limitations and simplicity. Played Awakening when it came out and thought it was okay, I've never replayed it though, and I tried Fates but just couldn't get into it.
I think you should try both, but I'd say go with Engage first since you're familiar with FE. I personally prefer 3H but it's more of a departure and needs more time investment. Alternatively, just go emulate old FE games you haven't played yet. If you were really turned off by Awakening/Fates, I got bad news for you about how the series has developed since.
That's kind of the sentiment I was getting. I think I'll look into Engage first.
I wouldn't say that I hated Fates/Awakening, I just couldn't get invested in them. I'll probably give one of them another shot at some point. I haven't ever properly finished Thracia either, so that's on the list as well. The newest game I played and really liked was Echoes.
And yeah, it's changed a lot since I started playing years ago. Being an oldgay is weird sometimes.
Engage is fun but goes out of it's way to have the worst possible first impression possible, almost to the point that it feels intentional, so it ended up being pretty divisive.
Three Houses put the franchise back on track despite having flaws, it was getting miserable (and went back to miserable thanks to Engage).
Pretty solid game filled with SOVL, there's a reason it's one of the only recent games people already feel nostalgic about.
For better or worse it made an impression on everyone who played it, not like all the slop that gets forgotten as soon as completed.
For a franchise like FE I don't care only about the gameplay moron, presentation, lore, ost, story, character writing are as important and Engage is f*ing miserable about everything that isn't gameplay.
I can tolerate mediocre but not complete garbage, I can't believe such a game has been made by actual adults thinking that design, narration etc were good.
Thank god TH outsold FEE hard, the latter will just be seen as a lolcow when the next title will release, as it should be

Somewhat agree. I think part of the reason I couldn't get into Fates was that I just couldn't force myself to give a shit about the game's setting or characters. There was just something about it that I didn't care for.
I can tolerate simplistic (like in GBA) or even subpar gameplay if I'm really invested in the characters or story. The story and characters don't have to be objectively great or complex either, I just have to like them. But if I don't care for them, I have no desire to keep playing, even if the gameplay is excellent.
i was gifted fire emblem three houses for christmas. i have never played a fire emblem game, but i have played advance wars and i like that series a lot. what am i in for?
I'm looking forward to the next game in the series. I loved Three Houses and loved Engage, but I'm ready for something new that ideally learns from both installments.
>triggers the endless engage vs 3H debate
Ah shit, here we go again
cute santa hat though
There is no debate. Just check the sales numbers

engage has fans?
I thought it was pretty popular, even on here?
People certainly post about it enough.

Does it get better after the first impression?
The new face of Fire Emblem.
Her game flopped so no.

The breasts of Fire Emblem.
I keep seeing threads mention how much they love yuri, but they post images of cute girls instead?

>I loved Three Houses and loved Engage
Nice to know I’m not the only one
The best lesbian in fire emblem
Rhea is better
There is only one face of Fire Emblem.
Is Engage as good as Three Houses? I've only played FE3H
Thats not Rukina.
I liked Engage fairly enough, for me Three Houses was the worst game in the franchise and the only one I dropped before finishing it.
