yet no fighting game in tournament comps ever goes above 60fps while FPS players try to make use of the biggest framerate available their computers can produce

Yeah but it's important to keep a consistent framerate, not a high framerate. It's the genre where a STABLE framerate matters the most.

Perfect Dark is in my top 5 all time favorite games. However it does have possibly the worst framerates ever, it literally goes in slow motion sometimes.

Does that matter to me? Not at all, I find it part of its charm. But I completely understand why that’s a dealbreaker for many people

i knew him from boyscouts, we were all in the same troop, and he was the best friend of one of the other kids who came. i actually kind of enjoyed hanging out with him when he would just come over by himself, but any time we were with the other guys he would morph into the world's biggest gay. i said his family was poor but honestly i don't even know if they actually were, they had a big house and like 5 acres but they were all filthy, everything they owned was old as shit and they were practically hoarders so i didn't know what to think. this kid had a major chip on his shoulder because of his gigachad older brother who was 6'6" and got a basketball scholarship while he ended up rotting away in town. i felt bad for him but he brought a lot of misery on himself. maybe if he had mowed lawns and bought TS2 instead of playing old N64 games, his life would've been different.

Never seen anyone say this. Rare has a reputation of making good games with charm to them, especially for a western studio when western games had no charm and were mostly bad.

True, but the game is still fun according to its intended design. I thought Goldeneye was a step back from Turok back in the day, but it's just more of a different kind of FPS rather a distinctly worse one (since both kinds are fun).

YOU make a full 3D FPS game on the N64 if you're so smart.

        Anonymous

There are several of them and they don't run at single digits FPS as soon as a few models appeal on screen. Even Ocarina which is often clowned for its framerate, feature stable 20 FPS in a huge ass world (for its time).

          Anonymous

Ambitious FPS games do run like garbage. Turok 2 is on par with Perfect Dark in scale, and it runs at about the same abysmal FPS.

            Anonymous

This is the only FPS on the 64 that didn't run like ass(unless you count Pokémon snap)

              Anonymous

The first turok also runs smooth, same for doom and quake.
The N64 games are usually more ambitious in scope, and in the case of TWINE it looks and runs better on the N64.

      Anonymous

the N64 its the only console that people brings the frame rate, but the other consoles with fully 3D rendered shooters with smaller levels and much less enemies on screen had bad frame rate either

        Anonymous

Yeah, it's very unfair. The best looking 3d ps1 games can run like ass but no one ever brings that up because it doesn't match the narrative. So they'll often compare fully 3d N64 games to 2d games or 3d games that heavily rely on limited draw distance or many 2d elements.
When you compare fair things like Doom, Duke3d, Quake, you get a majorly different impression but that doesn't serve console warring posters very well.

I'm not sure what framerate Final Fantasy 9 runs at, but I'm going to use that example as I think it is the best looking 3d game on the platform. It sure looks like it is running at like 10 frames a second.

            Anonymous

Chrono Cross is also another of the best looking games and in combat where everything is in 3d, it runs between 10-20 frames a second, occasionally dipping into single digits when spells are cast. But no one ever makes fun of the game for having terrible framerates when people point out how good it looks.

Vagrant Story looks better than FF9 and runs at a steady 30fps

              Anonymous

You are nuts, the models in FF9 are way more detailed and higher poly than VS, which is very low poly and pixelated.

              Anonymous

FF IX has four characters on screen plus enemies; the battles are not isometric either; and they present a much higher variety of textures and animations.

The Vagrant Story There's framerate dips during literally every single attack.

The game in general is just slow as hell. Everything takes forever, and everything is tedious. It's a bunch of menu-sifting for everything. When you're not sifting through menus to switch your weapon, you're sifting through menus to use a spell or an item.

Don't get me wrong, I finished both of them, and they are among the best games on PS1, but they had poor performance, which is a fact.

Here is another example: even with all the downgrade and cut content, the extra CD space meant nothing to help this game on PS1. Maybe that is why making a seamless game with interconnected levels on PS1 was so hard.

                >The Vagrant Story There's framerate dips during literally every single attack.
Literally have no idea what people are talking about when they say this. Spells yes, because they have load time and are non-interactive. Attacks, no. Did you play on real hardware?
FFIX is all menus and 2D backdrops and never gives you a full 3D environment to move around in. The interaction is on the level of a NES game. It's only notable in how everything in the battles is constantly animating.

It had good missions structure and a nice campaign story. Good amount of side content and multiplayer. Too bad the controls and aiming and everything else was shit. Which comes with the territory of being an N64 native game.
