I guess the game randomized enemies for each playthrough so I didn't have them in the final level. I had those wizards and overpowered skeletons.

Oh man the succubi were a showstopper on my recent run, was literally just following them around for hours. Ended up making it through, was the first time I'd beaten it solo, pretty radical. I love D1 so much.

keep a bow and some dex gear on your warrior for the damn succubi or it's going to be a slog.

Yeah I threw out every bow and then regretted it. Generally I hate ranged weapons but at least one is handy in D1.

The final level is not randomized. It's always the wizards and knights.

what's the strategy for the wizards as a warrior? Just baiting them out until they're alone then spam heal when they hit you?

Yeah just corner their light source and wait until they appear and whack them.

Just play a mage and put everything in Energy. Once you get the Mana Shield spell the rest of the game is a joke including the final level.

How to deal with the Butcher as mage? I feel like just leaving him alone and come back way later. Fighting him right as you meet him on floor 2 is just suicide

      Anonymous

Pick up any bow. Lure him to unblocked door with a grate you can shoot through next to it. Shut the door in his face and shoot him until he dies.

Use a bow or possibly magic. Scout out the level first and find the descending stairs. Then lure the Butcher near the stairs and run around them until the Butcher gets stuck on the stair side and then you can use what ever ranged attacks you'd like.

whats different between the PC and PS1 versions? don't just give me two big changes, i want the real autistic rundown

      Anonymous

      Truth is they're identical content-wise.

The PS1 version has a cleaned up UI, a built in turbo mode, and a co-op mode.

Only drawbacks to the PS1 version really is the load times, it takes like a full minute to go between floors, and the fact that the game uses almost an entire memory card.

The PS1 version runs at half the resolution and looks uglier, no idea why that wasn't mentioned.

I was also surprised how easy Diablo himself was. It was just all the enemies you have to get through that made it hard.

how is rogue supposed to be played?
I see videos of using a lot of spells
I only played as a warrior and all my spells were weak and wasted a lot of mana
    Doesn't make sense

Because there are probably different calculations among the classes. The warrior has the slowest cast rate of the three classes. He also has a low magic cap at 50, gains 1 MP upon level up and upon magic point investment. Not only that but apparently the classes have their own modifiers for recovering MP off of light MP potions. Compared to the Rogue which gains 2 mana upon level up and 1.5 mana per point into magic. While I haven't really delved into it, I wouldn't be surprised if there is diminishing returns on regards of dexterity and damage thus there are points invested into magic.

what about the spell levels? Do they matter for damage?
I quickly glanced at this playthrough and he seems to be using spells like Fire Wall which do decent damage but he has low amount of magic

Most spells depend on spell level and character level, magic stat only affects some of the lowest spells.

          Anonymous

Magic stat itself only affects how much total mana you have. Spell level is what ups the damage. Spell level is based on how many books of that spell you've found and read which all have the magic stat as a requirement which goes up as the spell level goes up.
Warrior will never be able to spam magic as his main damage source because of his low mana pool and his low casting speed compared to sorcerer.
Some spells like chain lightning only get really good after a couple of spell levels. Higher spell level not only affects damage but also the number and length of the lightning bolts that it shoots. You can hit an enemy multiple times with one cast because the bolt length is so long it takes more time to move completely move through the target.

I see, that's why my mana shield warrior didn't really work out.
But some spell damage do not scale with spell level
I just discovered that leveling up fire wall only decreases mana cost, which is why fire wall spam is a viable strategy with Rogue I guess

Spell level and how much magic you have influences spell damage. Magic has significantly more impact on your character compared to what they neutered energy to be in Diablo II.
            Magic does
            >Increases your maximum MP
            >Allows you to utilize magic scrolls and equip staves that have charges
            >Learn spell books and increase spell levels
            >Increases spell damage

I see, that's why my mana shield warrior didn't really work out.

Yeah, sadly the warrior has such a small MP pool that a couple or so hits will deplete your MP if you're using energy shield. On the other hand the wizard is insane with how you can build him. If you manage to get past the start of the game you can just dump so much into magic that he has so much MP, gains a ton from light mana potions, and a fast cast speed that he becomes a God. Personally I love warrior play throughs.

All four environments are pretty distinct which is what makes the game so fun and replayable. The strategy you use in the caves with complex interlinked narrow regions and lots of melee enemies is totally different from hell with its giant ass hallways and tittydemon energy stars flying down them.
