I did, for over 15 years, until I found out DS has something called "geometry correction". And when I gave it a go, it turned out it's just better at everything.
And it lets you map hotkeys to your gamepad, even combinations work, so you can for example take screenshots with L3+R3.
Everyone's shitting on you, but this is what makes DS so great lmao. I can play 3x native with all those nice graphics options. Soul meme is irrelevant here
the wobblyness only looks good at native resolution, it gets completely out of hand when you increase the res, there's no "soul" to the giga fricking massive wobbliness you get a 1080p/4k, none. It just looks bad.
But certainly if I'm playing a game at native res then I don't think it's necessary.
>increasing the resolution looks like shit for ps1 games anyway.
Depends on the game. MGS1 looks fantastic at higher resolutions. It's just a shame that the pgxp breaks the radar.
i fricking hate that shit. The resolution and aspect ratio would randomly get fricking and the game would go out of frame (i would only see the bottom left corner of the game, the rest would go offscreen).
As someone who used epsxe for many, many, MANY years, you really really should switch to DuckStation. It's actually incredible how much better of an experience it is.
does it have retroachievements support?
That's the main thing I look for in an emulator nowadays since I've already played everything I wanted to play, now I want to get cheevos for them.
Question, how on earth do I manage games with multiple discs? I have an old ass library that I've built up over 20+ years, but new emulators seem to have 0 way to change discs without closing, opening, and re-loading the entire fricking game. Don't know how we moved backwards on that but whatever.
I can't say I play just for them, but honestly it's a free novelty, no reason not to enjoy it, especially since it's user made and usually not filled with fluff, and has actual shit that might be worth calling an "Achievement".
With DS, you have a Change Disc option and you can either choose another disc of the game list, browse from another folder or make a m3u file with a list of the .cue files. Also Retroarchivements shat the bed with a translated game since it crashed every time I tried to play it with RA enabled.
>and has actual shit that might be worth calling an "Achievement".
Which is why it's shit because 99% of lists are abusing glitches, doing speedrunner nonsense, or jumping on one foot while your arm is severed and doing a 360 noscope through a bagel-tier achievements. RetroAchievements such shit, and the fact they're online only is even worse.
what do I use to make racing lagoon playable. I was trying a few different things and they tend to either have graphical glitches in the cutscenes or don't load the level fast enough in a race for me to react properly to oncoming turns
But the video is actually defending the mgs collection since he is saying that people expected options like increasing the resolution and other shit that would ruin the game visuals, just like they often do with emulators.
>people expected options like increasing the resolution and other shit that would ruin the game visuals
I don't see the problem with that as long as it's just optional instead of the only option (like in Halo 1 and 2 anniversary where you can switch between graphical modes)
>PS1 and PS2 emulation is always fricked for me when I use my old discs, no matter what emulator or settings >Turns out my disc drive is too slow so the game isn't loading fast enough >Give up because I don't want to download isos for games I own legit

speaking of ps1, how the frick do people still play thps 1/2 with ps1 controls?
it's so fricking sluggish
I played through basically every single TH game but I used 2x for 1 and 2 and it was so much more pleasant to play
Its not the 90s anymore so you shouldn't care about skateboard dude
holy shit it's punchy
but is it emulation or port? if it has the ps1 polygon jiggle it should be fixed on pc
Its just emulation, they are not gonna spend that much effort rebuilding a game. Anyway the guy in the video is right, people have no appreciation for the original game and think they know better, protip you probably don't even if you aren't a zoomer, MGS should be played on a CRT or at worst at native res with some shaders on, anything else is an exercise in futility
I downloaded Dolphin, played RE2 no prob. Tried to play Mario Sunshine but runs at 10-16fps stuttering shit. SW Rogue Sq? Same shit. So yeah, I have a basic 200 dollar laptop from 2021 with celeron processor or whatever, but wtf cant I run games from like 20 years ago? Basically all I can run is PS1 and N64 games.
Emulation is pretty much entirely dependent on your CPU, try to lower your internal res as much as possible but even then don't expect mriacles, you will probably be able to play PSP and DS games well and that's it for modern games.
>Anyway the guy in the video is right, people have no appreciation for the original game and think they know better,
Yeah I'd agree now that I watched it. Not gonna defend the "port" though since selling ROMs is pretty scummy and lazy when you have the source code. But if we ignore all that they released them in a way they're supposed to be played.
I downloaded Dolphin, played RE2 no prob. Tried to play Mario Sunshine but runs at 10-16fps stuttering shit. SW Rogue Sq? Same shit. The 6th gen of consoles is also a lot heavier to emulate than 5th gen
>The 6th gen of consoles is also a lot heavier to emulate than 5th gen
That's bullshit. You could run a lot of games at full speed on a shitty Phenom 2 CPU.
The only explanation I can find is they made the emulators more accurate over time, raising system requirements in the process.
Some games just inherently have problems. I have a decent comp, and even then the Rogue Squadron series is a headache to play. If you want my advice, there's a specific version of Dolphin that supposedly works better than the others. It's an older version, look for Dolphin 5.0-5075. Just like with PCSX2, sometimes an older version will deliver better performance on specific games.
I used to emulate PSX nearly perfectly like 20 years ago, now barely any emulator works unless you have a turbo jet machine. Can anyone explain this to me? Duckstation was a marvel, but it only works on x64, so what the frick happened between windows xp emulators and current tech?
I want the less accurate options, what can I do? I can't think of anything I missed playing in older emulators and I surely wouldn't mind not getting upscaled resolution if that's the trade off. Earlier in the year I wanted to play a fantraslation of a SNES SMT game and it was running on single digit FPS, that can't possibly be alright when I was playing stuff like Sega Genesis on emulators back when PC had the turbo button.
>what the frick happened between windows xp emulators and current tech?
accuracy
>duckstation >accuracy
I mean, you're not wrong that old emulators were a pile of hacks, but they were a pile of hacks designed to make it run fast on hardware not capable of more accurate emulation.
Now we have significantly faster computers that could much more reasonably come close to accurate PS1 emulation and instead all those cycles get burned on sub-optimal code and meme features.
Don't confuse accuracy with "runs without modification." Duckstation's main claim to fame over shitty emulators like PCSX and ePSX is that all its filthy hacks are automatic whereas old emulators needed you to fiddle with plugin settings to work around errors. But Duckstation is no less a pile of hacks than those are, it's just easy mode.
>sub-optimal code and meme features
bro my 2014 laptop runs duckstation with 9% cpu load and 11% load with software rendering read back. if that's burning your brazilian power station, consider upgrade to something made after 2010
It has a handy UI, good performance for high resolutions and PGXP to fix psx wobbliness. I was sceptical about it first but it just made as way better program than previous emulators
>but it only works on x64
no one is writing code for plain x86 anymore, meaning now if they want to support it, they have to support a 32 bit ABI, and even plenty of paid developers are getting tired of keeping track of hardware differences to support morons who can't let go of their crap 32 bit hardware
Until someone actually perfects the PSX SPU reverb, PS1 emulation is not finished.
No, the games didn't "always sound like that", the chip was just never reverse-engineered that carefully and not even Sony ever made an accurate software emulation for the SPU.

Sure, sure. If you were already alive when PSX was out, you'd know this bothered a lot of people.
Literally didn't bother anyone as it was the first 3D console for most of us zoomer.
It bothers me but I like that it bothers me

wat?
Just the upscaling of 2D elements is a pretty bad idea
Most of MGS2 and 3 are 3D elements though, it should be easy to just upscale that and make new high res 2D elements.
modern emulators have options to upscale 3d elements while leaving 2d elements raw/filtered/upscaled etc.
Since fricking when?
