man why did Soul Calibur fall off so hard after IV? it used to have such a presence in the gaming world even in pop culture being referenced in Eminem songs and American Dad and now it just disappeared
4 added all this shitty super mechanics and trash like that and it has got worse and worse since then.
Gonna be the same reason tekken 6 was the last good tekken game.
Yeah but like soul calibur they have started adding shitty mechanics that just ruin the flow of what made tekken tekken. At least they had the TTT spin off to add shit like that but it is a slippery slope.
I am a legacy tekken player and T7 has ruined the franchise for me, it will be the same for many too and now 8 adds newer mechanics that nobody wants it is only a matter of time before they alienate the fans in every direction and the franchise goes to shit completely.
Irony with tekken is all this time they never got rid of moronic shit like KWD.
Irony for both is they already had their own versions of supers with power ups and unblocakables, but now with both games they have gone full zoomer tier moronic adding cinematic cutscene supers mid match and just ruined the flow of both games.
SC6 had some shitty clash mechanic too ripped from injustice that just destroyed the game. it was unblockable at launch too.
Both franchises are on the shit tier list for me now, coming from my favourite fighting games to the worse for me.
>Gamespot - By definition, one cannot improve upon perfection. So, considering that 1999's Soul Calibur for the Dreamcast is widely considered to be a flawless fighting game, maybe that explains why Namco didn't take many risks with the sequel, which has finally hit the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube. If you played and enjoyed the original Soul Calibur, chances are good that you'll also enjoy the sequel since it's so much like the first game. That also means Soul Calibur II won't impress you as much as its predecessor, since you've seen most of these characters, their weapons, and their moves before, and the available gameplay modes are nothing out of the ordinary. Nevertheless, on its own terms, Soul Calibur II is by all means a great fighting game, and Namco has done a fine job of making each respective console version equally enticing. If nothing else, Soul Calibur II is proof of how outstanding 1999's Soul Calibur really was. Like its predecessor, this sequel can provide countless hours of fast-paced, great looking battles--though if you played a lot of the previous Soul Calibur game, you'll be hard-pressed to sustain or even muster up the same level of enthusiasm over this update.
SoulCalibur II was seen as a downgrade and just made critics regard the first one even higher.
>gamespot recognizing that a nearly identical sequel will not necessarily inspire the same awe in those who played the original
it sure was a different time
Their review for the original game >Namco has built a bulletproof reputation for delivering arcade-perfect conversions of their already excellent arcade games into your home, with a gaggle of consumer-exclusive features that made you want to cry out of happiness. In the case of Soul Calibur, Sega should be crying tears of joy. Namco has amply displayed exactly how conversions of this nature should be done. This time, however, the "house that Pac-Man built" has done even better. This time around it has taken the best 3D fighter out of the arcades, given it a major facelift, and reshaped it until it was light years beyond the original, both graphically and in terms of value, and then brought it home for under 50 bucks. And the company has made only scant changes to bring the game to the states. The voices in the US version are indeed the same as in the Japanese version, but now there is an option to turn on English subtitles; one of Voldo's outfits has had its crotch spikes removed; and the Internet mode is gone. So Soul Calibur has reached US shores virtually unscathed, keeping it the game that will show the world how powerful the Dreamcast really is. Kicking out an unprecedented number of special effects at an unassailable 60fps, all in mega-high resolution, with supercharged gameplay nailing it all down, the only way this game will look any better is to play it using Sega's PC monitor-compatible VGA box. If you have one of those, the game is on a completely different visual level than anything else out there. While it may seem bandwagon-esque to say this game is worthy of a perfect score, it really isn't much of a stretch to say it is. Soul Calibur is mind-numbing perfection. Namco has taken the best and made it considerably better. The level at which the company has done so is practically unprecedented. Think state of the art. Absolutely brilliant in all aspects, as far as fighting games go Soul Calibur is the undisputed king of the hill.
>SoulCalibur II was seen as a downgrade
Not at all, soul calibur 2 is seen as the best game in the entire franchise, in fact they "HD remastered it" for the PS3 and 360
Just it didnt innovate like SC1 did so didnt stand out.
SC3 is the same.
1-3 all play very much the same.
6 competes for that at this point, it gets edged out because of reversal edge rock/paper/scissors cutscene shit and cutscene supers but everything else is really nice. RE isn't even a real blight on the gameplay as its easy to play around, it's more that going into the mechanic is cutscene shit like the supers is.
It was a real return to form after 5 and every returning character was done justice.
Only a zoomer would say this, back then it was either SoulCalibur or Super Smash Bros Melee considered the best fighting game. Nobody ever rated the second game back then. This was from 2006 when the largest gaming website polled it's users asking them to vote for the best game released until that point
>FFVI 15 spots higher than VII >MM 40 spots lower than OOT >WW far ahead of MM >God of War near the top 10 >GoldenEye highest FPS >No Deus Ex anywhere in site >Oblivion but no Morrowind
This BTFO's Ganker revisionists
The series in general is pretty solid, especially the original trilogy, but the first R&C is scuffed compared to what came after. My guess is that it broke some ground and was decently polished for most of the playthrough until near the end where frayed edges begin to show and you realize you can shoot remote controlled missiles through the scenery because that weapon was so broken that the developers forgot to account for it.
>Goldeneye that high
Can't put any N64 shooter that high just because of how fricked the controls are. Those are only good because they managed to sort of work on console for the first time, they don't compare to any FPS on PC from the same time period or most any FPS on consoles made after.
yes it has analog.
it actually uses it differently from the dpad, analog up and down will step into the background or foreground while the dpad jumps and ducks
After really only knowing the franchise from it's terrible later games, it's nuts to me that Soul Calibur 1 and 2 were really well received. Basically everything after those two had no budget and were just trash ESPECIALLY the most recent one. What a sad fate.
>Pokemon - Overrated but I guess it was impressive for a GB game >Super Mario 64 - legit 10/10 and still is >OoT - legit >SoulCal - Legit >ChronoCross - never played >Vagrant Story - never played >GT2 - played but dont remember much so I don't think is all that >TH3 - legit >WW - a 9/10 >MGS GB - who played this? >MM - haven't played but on my list >MGS IV - 9/10, should be MGS 3 >Nintendogs - not really a game but impressive for a handheld sims
actually not too bad
what I don't understand is the lack of SNES games for the publishers thats been there since the 80s? did that not have review scores?
No. It's a broken kusoge on any serious level. It got high reviews because it's easy for normalgays to button mash in and it had good graphics (for less than a year)
vagrant story mgs4 and gs are the only good games hers
>MGS4
>Good

Every other major fighting game franchise just got MUCH better/popular and SC was never able to catch up.
I know but why? is not like everyone else also didn't drop in quality
I guess theres no explanation and it just happened

What makes 2 better exactly
is bigger
No one who actually plays fighting games thinks 1 is better

highest FPS
>>No Deus Ex anywhere in site
but no Morrowind
PC gaming was not as popular back then, mainstream gaming was very console dominant
I do remember GS giving Diablo 2 a 10/10
What the frick is ratchet and clank doing so high?
The series in general is pretty solid, especially the original trilogy, but the first R&C is scuffed compared to what came after. see
you also be very hard pressed to find any reviews for Arcade games even although they were dying at the time and are dead in the west now but still
I never understood the obsession with God of War and why Ganker has always hated it
back then it was popular to hate edgelords like GoW, MK and Shadow the Hedgehog
Nobody can justify Half-Life being 90 spots below 2
Nah, 2 was a lot better than the first.
Half-Life 2 was what made PC gaming popular with its super duper graffix(at the time) and impressive physics engine
Genuinely baffling that the source engine is still capable of making decent looking games even today.
yeah, it was the beginning of the technical softcap imo, nothing has impressed me as much as HL2 did, there was Crysis though
If it wasn't for the godawful vehicle sections HL2 would be a masterpiece
why
EGM is objectively correct.
Soul Calibur getting 10s is a fricking joke lol
It was so flawless that if it came out in 1998 it would have won game of the year over even ocarina of Time
zoomzoom
You are a fricking moron for not even knowing how fricking good that game is
yeah, most of it's success was due to it being the best looking game around. the game still looks pretty good on Dreamcast actually
I suppose I've seen worse games get 10/10
does the Dreamcast version of sc1 have analog control or is it like jojo where you can only use the d-pad
>dreamcast version
It was only ever on the Dreamcast (and arcade)
I think it did but its been over 20 years since I played it.
yes it has analog.
it actually uses it differently from the dpad, analog up and down will step into the background or foreground while the dpad jumps and ducks
>MGS
>Only for game boy color
it was
It's not a port of the PSX game if that's what you're thinking.
>MGS4
>windwaker
>cross
Who in their right mind would give Windwaker a 10/10 it's a blatantly unfinished game
Did IGN give a 10 to Pokemon Gold but not silver, why?
frick lugia that's why
All three versions of the first 2 generations had 10/10 except Yellow i believe
After really only knowing the franchise from it's terrible later games, it's nuts to me that Soul Calibur 1 and 2 were really well received. Basically everything after those two had no budget and were just trash ESPECIALLY the most recent one. What a sad fate.
>Pokemon - Overrated but I guess it was impressive for a GB game
>Super Mario 64 - legit 10/10 and still is
>OoT - legit
>SoulCal - Legit
>ChronoCross - never played
>Vagrant Story - never played
>GT2 - played but dont remember much so I don't think is all that
>TH3 - legit
>WW - a 9/10
>MGS GB - who played this?
>MM - haven't played but on my list
>MGS IV - 9/10, should be MGS 3
>Nintendogs - not really a game but impressive for a handheld sims
actually not too bad
what I don't understand is the lack of SNES games for the publishers thats been there since the 80s? did that not have review scores?
And all are outdated garbage now, really makes you think.
Vagrant Story really deserves it
Vagrant Story really deserves it.
Was the first soul calibur that good?
No. It's a broken kusoge on any serious level. It got high reviews because it's easy for normalgays to button mash in and it had good graphics (for less than a year)
how so, please expain
It was literally the highest fighting game on Ganker's list this year
Equally as good as The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, so take that as you will
Nintendogs deserved it
dreamcast chads can't stop winning
