In this series case it was there from the start, the creator of Forgotten Realms originally had all of what is in the game and more like incest being perfectly common and most holidays involving orgies.
If anything Baldur's Gate is pretty sanitized from Ed Greenwoods original vision, here's a small list of things from his original design. >Bi-sexuality is normal >"Revels" (sex orgies) are normal >"Festhalls" (brothels) are in every small village and visiting them is normal way to spend evening. >Prostitution is the main industry of Forgotten Realms, "sex workers" are everywhere and there are about 100 different names for different kinds of prostitutes. >Incest is normal way for families to "indulge feelings of mutual affection" >Public city-wide orgies are the way to celebrate major holidays
This setting was made by a guy raised by literal hippies in the 60's no one should be shocked by it being like this.
I think the problem for me was how eccentric everything was. It was such a weird mash of random ideas into a world with no cohesion or directed setting. Sure, this spills over into the characters but it was the atmosphere that was actually stunted the hardest. For instance, I remember thinking that act 2 would be a grim dark shadow world, but was immediately ripped out once i encountered the wacky doctor guy. Could he be kind of scary in other games? I guess. Was there any place for him in the medieval shadow village? No.
The only characters' stories I cared even a little about were a handful of the side-characters. Like that tiefling wizard, Roland or something, and his two companions. Nothing about him being a tiefling plays into his story at all, he could've just been a normal guy (he essentially is) and it would've worked exactly the same. And it was a pretty alright little story that spans all the acts.
Then you swap back to the companion stories, and they're all chosen by the gods, or legendary warriors from hell, or have literally FRICKED GODDESSES, etc., it's so fricking boring. Scrape away the top layer and all of their stories are 95% either SHIT or ROMANCE. I think Roland unironically is a better developed character than every single companion.
Rolan is a good character, I agree. Honestly, he could've had a very similar story while being a party member, I do wish he was one.
And now that I think about it, what you just said is probably the main reason I favor Astarion over the other origin characters, he's the only one who isn't some super special person. He's a shitty vampire slave who's gotten a taste of freedom and wants revenge, that's it. He's the only one who really feels like he's on equal footing with the player.
