The idea was to originally make the Xbox controllable by japanese cheeseburgers, but they rotted too fast, so Microsoft had to hurriedly design a smaller controller.
Tfw you realize this Duke controller only existed because the Japanese controller board manufacturer that the whole world was using refused to sell the smaller controller boards to Americans and only sold their smaller boards to Japanese companies. Then when this fact became public knowledge, the company got shamed publicly, and agreed to sell the smaller boards to Americans which allowed them to make Xbox controller S. Typical behind the scenes Asian favoritism.
Can't speak for others but I only like it because start and select are in the correct place and not shoved off to the left like the stupid fricking S controller.
That makes sense, but for some reason I see this weird worship of this thing from retro gaming youtubers (the Metal Jesus types) and on places like twitter as if it's some special controller that defies all others. Seems to me the only special thing about it is that it's really fricking big.

its contrarianism as evidenced by the fact that a thread only exists now to serve in a "japan bad" proxy war
it felt really fricking good to hold when playing halo, just so hefty. like holding an actual gun or sth. plus the way the buttons rattled when it vibrated added to the feeling...basically it was a further refinement of the DC pad.
I hate the arrangement of the face buttons on the duke controller, it's basically a six button layout that's arranged vertically. Picrel is what using a duke feels like to me.
false, windows CE was only ever utilized in games that had it on the GD, and it was more like an extra layer for the game to run in that would interface with the hardware rather than an actual operating system.
the issue with the duke isnt the size of the actual controller mold. the DC controller is large but the buttons are closer to the edge, the xbox buttons are further in, making it harder to reach them.
That story Seamus Blackley told about how he was visiting Capcom and showing off the Controler S to get feedback on it, Only for them to take him to their R&D to show off Steel Battalion and look for his sign off on it still makes me kek.
The only reason the controller was that big was because the Japanese company that makes the small sized circuit boards for controllers wouldn't sell them to Microsoft.
They would only sell Microsoft the bigger circuit board model they had.
And only sell their smaller circuit board to Japanese companies.
When word got out that the company turned down a multi-billion dollar sale to Microsoft for smaller boards, they were shamed in the press and changed their minds.
That's the real reason the Xbox controller S was made.
Despite all the Japanese publishers that Microsoft courted, they still had no clue about that market and did not make any significant inroads with the Xbox.
None of the A list Japanese game companies wanted to work with Microsoft unless they paid huge amounts of money. And even then, they didn't want to make true exclusives for Microsoft Xbox. Only multi-platform games, or "times" exclusive. You will never see a new Final Fantasy main game as an Xbox Exclusive.
You also need to understand something. The Japanese public doesn't like supporting foreign companies. They are perfectly happy selling Nintendo to other countries. But they hate importing foreign gaming brands into their country. It's considered tainted. That's why they sold Xbox consoles in dark plastic bags so no one could see inside, and little covers to block the top of the bag so no one could see through the open top.
OHHHH WAOW CONTRORRER TOO BEEG
GRAFICS TOO GOOD
I WIR NOT BUYU YOUR SYSTEMU MACROSOFT-SAN
The point is, Kaito-kun, I'm here. I'm here for you. Cheeseburger, Xbox, and me.
The idea was to originally make the Xbox controllable by japanese cheeseburgers, but they rotted too fast, so Microsoft had to hurriedly design a smaller controller.
>have to act like a crab if you want to press the start or black and white buttons.
Why would a japanese buy a soulless burgerland console when they already have nintendo and sony.
they love burgerland phones
Well, now they do. In the 00s and prior, that was not so.
xbox was awesome if you had friends to play with. 4 player split-screen was fun. it had good racing games and shooters.
What's up with that dpad tho
Fear.
I agree. It's like they always had to mess up at least 1 or 2 things on any non Sony controllers wtf
is just inferiority complex shown on the pad and console even to date and nothing else.
Is this version rare?
I have not seen one in years, even though I have lots of xboxs in the wild, just yesterday I saw 1 in the flea market
the douk was discontinued pretty quickly but it's more just uncommon than it is rare.
It was never even released in Japan, numbnuts. They always had the model S.

Why do people seemingly love the Duke controller so much?

also proper 6 button layout, can play street fighter with it

It feels like a wild beast, or alien technology.
You may never understand if you're heterosexual.
If you're not a woman, a child, or a numale with small feminine hands, it's a fantastic controller.
If you're a femboy with small feminine hands though, hit me up I'm extremely lonely
I hate the arrangement of the face buttons on the duke controller, it's basically a six button layout that's arranged vertically. Picrel is what using a duke feels like to me.
You sure 'bout that, homie?
Damn, the Xbox really was the Dreamcast 2
The Dreamcast even had an optimised version of Windows CE (with DirectX) as an operating system.

People in America were making fun of it, too.
The size was never a factor for me even as a kid but those arts and craft bead face buttons sucked dick.
Their goddamn tiny little nip monkey hands couldn't fit the awesomeness that is american ingenuity
