The graphics on a PS Vita are insane, I understand what everyone meant when they wanted a remake of Final Fantasy 7 after this came out on PS2, must have been mind blowing to have experienced it back then. However, I'm like an hour into the game and so far it's been interesting but not very entertaining. I like the sphere grid, it seems like they made materia more engaging with this mechanic. The main villain is named Sin and one of the characters mentioned that they believe it was punishment for living immoral lives, that seems like a heavy-handed metaphor don't you think? The combat makes me wonder why this wasn't just an action RPG, it's not very exciting.

That was a call on the translation team. Sin in japanese is Shin, which commonly means either true or death, which fits with the "spiral of death" motif FFX has.

Why are these kinds of HUD assets uglier in this gen than they were in 4th? Some of the fonts look patched together with visible seams, and emulators make it stand out even worse with visible boxing, even on ps1. Was it only sega not looking like shit

It's the beginning of corridor fantasy era. I could never get into x, so I stopped. Been thinking about ix or vi... Though I'm still in the middle of Albert odyssey and my never ending ff7 files. As for the graphics, they are truly amazing. The ports of mgs2 and 3 are outstanding and they play great too. Idk if you're into older style adventure games but scummvm works great and a lot of the old point n clicks look awesome on the Vita and they play pretty good with the extra touch support available.

I was turned off by the Vita ports of Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 because they didn't include all the content from their initial rereleases on PS2. I guess they wanted to cut down on the filesize and figured that extra content doesn't pertain to the main game.

but there's supposed to be a skateboarding game in one of them, I want that, boy do I want that.

I didn't think the scummvm was ported yet, I was planning to try Monkey Island for a while but keep getting sidetracked.

I like the sphere grid, it's basically junctioning but good. In many ways X is the game VIII should have been

I haven't played much of the series, I have kept intending to play FF7 for a long time. As far back as getting the game at a pawnshop and it came with two disc three's and a disc two, so I couldn't even begin the game. I've tried two seperate versions on a PSP as well but life gets in the way I suppose. It's a friend of mine's favorite game so I want to give it an earnest go, one of my favorites is Legend of Dragoon and I've heard that it's a copycat of FF7, but I really enjoyed pretty much everything about it.

it's a toss up of putting the PSP version on the Vita now, or I will play a modded PC version which I am more inclined to do at this point, make it feel more modern.

All those classic games in the series too, I've played most of FF2, and I've only replayed the first 45 minutes of FF4. For that I reckon I will play it on DS in 3D, I like the graphics for that, it feels like maybe what it would have been like to have come out on an N64 or a PS1 or something, it has a uniqueness to it.

PS2 games (and their re-releases) are retro. you didn't read the sticky?

there should be ban on re-releases discussions, or especially remasters/remakes. that includes PS2 releases of psp games just to make it fair. leave those to Ganker to fight over which version is "superior" or whatever. these petty fights that op brings don't add to anything

by that logic there might as well be a ban on emulation, scalers, non-CRT displays, rom-hacks, homebrew, etc. I agree on the remakes, since it's a completely new game, but a re-release is the same game by definition. If a PC game released originally in 1998 got a new steam version today with a few graphical touch-ups and a new aspect ratio, we would have to ban that too.

        >it’s in a “sticky” so that makes it true
PS2 will literally never be retro.

Lmao the environments are barely upgraded and the characters were turned into KH characters with completely different faces

yeah it could just be the OLED screen on the device but I think it looks incredible, and the way it will seamlessly transition to the cinematics and back gives the impression that the graphics are next level from time to time.

You have to remember that judeo-christian mythology is as much of a novelty to the Japanese as shinto-buddhist mythology is to us.

that's an interesting point I haven't considered. it's pretty neat to have your own culture's mytho's presented back to you with a different perspective. I would wager some nations would be offended by it, but if you explore it as a piece of media with an open mind it can be pretty interesting.
