Final Fantasy 6 is a bad game. Story was lame, mechanics were lame and unfinished and it was basically made to sell strategy guides.
Final Fantasy 7 is a good game and where the series actually starts if you don't want to slog through literal garbage.

7 may have a lot going for it, the villain isn't one of those things, Sephiroth isn't even as good as Ultimecia

Technically Kefka can cause Shadow's death too since the floating island shit is his fault, and he also mind-broke the party so hard they would never have even faced him if Celes didn't happen to see a bird wearing a bandana after failing to commit suicide (which itself is years after his rise to power).
He singlehandedly turned the empire into the evil machine it was. Shinra would be just as evil without Sephiroth, he wasn't a villain, he was an opportunist like Starscream but without the self-loathing pride that made Starscream hateable (the one Kefka had).
He also indirectly killed the espers and Cid.
I only mentioned Aerith because it's the only thing Sephiroth did that could garner me wanting to end him, and it didn't that much.
Not really, Cefca himself was a result of Emperor Gasutora’s magitek experiments, and only worked as a tool for the emperor until his betrayal. Empire would have been evil even without him.
I liked the way sephiroth was presented in the original, he was kind of a shuttered freak and they teased him like a slasher villain. everything after completely overblew things with him. he's still pretty cool when they use him sparingly like how he just randomly shows up in kingdom hearts to whoop sora's ass for no fricking reason
