That's a problem with the run & gun genre (and beat 'em ups for that matter) in general. There's only so much variation you can do with regular enemy types due to the mindless AI, so the stages become monotonous if you don't throw in a bunch of minibosses. That's why Mega Man is superior. The platforming has just as much focus as the action and the enemy types more often are actually aware of your presence.

Gunstar was not that fun for me IMO. Weapons were too imbalanced.
Gunstar Heroes easily. It has a much superior highest difficulty setting. Contra 3 is pure bullshit on hard mode.
