I think it could've been done but clearly the devs were first unfocused and experimenting with the tech hence why their 2005 reveal being just messing around in the tech demo. But then they had to be corralled into producing something coherent due to costs and it kinda went too far, stomping its uniqueness
Alan Wake is really empty and "flat". Its a very shallow action game masquerading as survival horror. But the devs said the sequel is not action but a true survival horror game.
