To be fair, if you don't luck out on escaping from all the shitters who pop items the second they get them, you're probably gonna have a terrible time. For such a skill based kart racer, I always wanted them to add the ability to turn off debilitating items, but alas, the game's life cycle came and went with no such changes. Playing online was miserable by default anyway because of fricking load times though. This shit still needs a definitive port with all the shit either unlocked or relegated to purely unlockables and improved load times. Literally my two biggest issues with the game.

I played a ton back then and unlocked everything both in the GPs and the item shop including the top 5% decals, but I'd wager over half the time was spent in loading screens. It was aggravating whenever you'd have to wait a minute after everyone joined to start loading the race and the host would disconnect a few seconds before then. Peer to peer with no host migration is ridiculous.

Yeah, I think they put the minimum amount of effort into CTR's online mode, with there only being single races and battles. I've heard that the online is even more fricked now due to PS5 users loading faster than PS4 users.

They never optimized the game for PS5, but CTR does load slightly faster on it, but that causes a bug in online races where PS5 users load faster than PS4 users, so the PS4 users get kicked out of the race.

      Pros:
      Got rid of froggy-ing
      airbrake no longer nukes reserves
      more characters
stats no longer tied to character
      Nitro wheels
Best way to play Nitro Kart tracks
blue fire is overall a positive despite totally changing the flow of Cortex Castle and N-gin Labs
      Velo and Dev ghosts

      Cons:
Worse visual style and lighting than PS1
Turning is far worse, to the point that Speed in ps1 has better handling than Turn in NF
      weird geometry
      Sewer speedway
      loading times
      MTX

Original CTR is the best way to play the CTR tracks, but the other half of NF's track make it worth picking up.

Of course the multiplayer in a time trial game is going to be half baked...

It really is. I don't know if the original CTR had anything over the NF remake (never played the original), but I've heard its really close to the original.
My favorire kart racing games before were Diddy Kong Racing, then Mario Kart DS, and Double Dash being in close third. CTR:NF takes the cake in terms of gameplay and content.

see, here's a guy that appreciates quality kart racing. DS and DD! are great.

I can't imagine being in your shoes and never playing the original.

I definitely recommend it, its my favorite game. But the remake did such a good job that idk what the original offers.

I'll argue Its worth a playthrough for the crisp visuals and story that can be beaten in a few hours. Plus its satisfying to 100% so the smaller package has completionist appeal. also playstation historical curiosity.
The game is wicked smooth, you'll be shocked how similar it really is to NF (which feels amazing. Imagine how it felt in '99 on ps1. Imagine how maddening it was that everyone and their mothers preferred mk64 when such bandicoot perfection existed)
NF is defintely more similar to CTR than PS2 nitrokart. NK isnt great, NF redeemed its tracks.

      that's not f-zero gx

thats not a kart racer. idk where all you whiney GX fans came from but its starting to be annoying. (I love GX, X, and 99. Pls stop being an elitist absolutist. I used to be like you and lost friends because I shat on MKwii for being too casual. Pls just cherish all racing games and quit bein autistic)

      >Aren't the driving handling and physics different from the original?
They are, here's a list of big changes
      >NF has a faster base speed and reserves drain faster than in OG
      >NF changes USF to be a boost state you can keep up with reserves whenever you hit the super turbo pads. This is why people call it blue fire instead of usf like they did early on in NFs life.
      >U turns got buffed in NF as it no longer kills your reserves.
      >NF adds in air braking, which pauses your cart in the air and lets you turn it, doesn't kill reserves.
      >NF adds an extra tier of sacred fire (that's not in OG) that's used on specific boost pads on certain tracks like mystery caves and cortex castle. This works like normal SF, but is just a little faster.
      Smaller changes
      >Powerslide angles are different for all engines
      >Wheels turn slower than in OG
      >Jump physics are more obviously scripted than feeling organic in OG e.g. sewer speedway sc, oxide station's big jumps because of NFs speed increase etc.
      >Course hazards are already active the instant the race loads instead of being active when the race itself starts.
      Too lazy to type more

as a CTR and Crash trilogy mega fan, I think Nitrofueled (Beenox) did a much better job than N.Sane trilogy. beenox could've saved crash but activision wont port their game to PC and gave the IP to goys for zog and now we suffer.

Oh yeah, I was thinking of playing the original for the longest time until the remake was announced. I'm really happy with how the remake came out, had a blast when the Grand Prixes were going on.
        >Imagine how maddening it was that everyone and their mothers preferred mk64 when
Agreed. I didn't play Mario Kart 64 until much later and I was shocked with how bare bones it was compared to others at the time. Diddy Kong Racing is a much better game (3x I'd argue) than it and came out only like a year or so afterwards. Thankfully the later Mario Kart games got better.

I find the high skill ceiling in regards to pulling off the shortcuts to be highly satisfying, the music is hectic, the story behind it is fun what with the war going on in the background adding to the chaos, the pacing is perfect, and it's one of those courses where it's an exhilarating close match if you're at an equal skill level with your opponent. Online is fricked regardless of skill tbh. The item RNG and laggy weapons during the first 15-30 secs of the race will generally frick most of the players out of their reserves, and 2 or 3 players will end up so far ahead of the pack that even equally skilled players will have little chance to catch up, especially if it's a USF track.

I don't think there's really anything deep to the reserves, you just have some or don't. Although it would probably be better if there was a meter indicating when you're running out. The boosting is just tapping a button so I'm not sure it's that special either, it's been there since the PS1 game

Characters from random shitty mobile games. All the extra tracks. It has to be the only remake/remaster to completely outdo the original in every single way. Just perfect. The monthly GP updates were fantastic, real comfy time waiting for the new shit to be announced.

    >don't bother buying it for console because every fricking other one of these remakes just got ported to PC after like a year
    >year passes
    >instead of porting it to PC they just spent all the time shitting it up with cosmetics and microtransactions like they said they wouldn't

At this point I refuse to just buy it on PS4 out of principle, frick these lying devs.

It was reasonable to get everything just by playing back when the "seasons" were still happening, completing the Grand Prix/battle pass gave you enough coin to empty out the shop too. Now though, I think shit's fricked. There are still bonus payouts but they're much lower.

Aren't the driving handling and physics different from the original? Or am I confusing it with the remake trilogy?

        Anonymous

Your stupid skill cap autism kills games. No one's gonna bother to lab tracks for hours on end to stand a chance at not being last.

Don't blame people for wanting to get good at a game with deep enough mechanics to justify it. Blame the developers and publisher for making shit online with no matchmaking nor distinction between casual and ranked despite the game including extremely hard time trials that spur you to learn the ins and outs of every track and mechanic.

Except all the people who obviously do? Did you think for five seconds before posting? There will always be good players who put the effort in.

It's honestly disgusting how people can say casual shit like this on this board now and no one even bats an eye. You can't have a thread about ANY vaguely challenging multiplayer game without some guy b***hing 'I play games to wind down this feels like work waahhhh' and other casual gamer shit.

Untrue, loads of people do. Basically anyone with an attention span who actually enjoys video games. But even if it was true that's better than it being dumbed down and made into a mockery of itself to appeal to casuals who will drop the game in a week to play the next 'new thing'. I am happy you people like you got filtered. Go play one of the countless games made for people like you instead of ruining things for others.

The problem with your moronic reserves system is it creates an incorrigible between players who were lucky enough to gain a bit on the rest of the pack. The game turns into a single-player racer at that point, and they have basically nothing to fear as long as they don't slip up.
Once again, it's not about skill caps, it's about being unable to catch up. That, and the annoyingly distracting speedtroony minigames which are probably on par with QTEs.

Why do you care when it's obvious you don't enjoy it? If you had matchmaking or a different game mode to pair with other handicapped morons you could play that and forget about reserve autism that some of us like.
Yes, i want to play 8 players online time trial. What about it? Why would you care about that if you had the way to engage with the game in the way you want?
The reserve system is perfectly fine.

The issues you're describing are easily fixable with dedicated servers that allow items to properly track and hit players. It's not a fault of the reserve system, it's a fault of stingy CEOS withholding funding.

Doesn't original ctr also have air brake? You do it on papu pyramid to use the shortcut at the end of the lap to skip the last portion. It does kill your reserves.

That's a U-Turn you do for that SC not an air brake
Air brake doesn't exist in OG

              Anonymous

I just looked it up and turns out I have never used air braking. Thought it was the name for u turning while on a big jump like the situation I described, and u turning was only when you did it at floor level.
Well, doesn't really seem all that useful compared to u turning really.

    What is USF?

      Anonymous

when you run over a speed pad you get a boost
USF is the fastest type of boost you can get.
if you were chaining boosts before going on the pad you can maintain the pad boost.
if you're really good at the game you can hold the fastest boosts for the entire lap.
