It's about making sure that one class isn't clearly superior for all options over another. There was literally no reason to play as another class besides medic if you wanted to dominate matches in that game. Not unless a situation demanded that you flex into engineer, which was infrequent.

in the new Starship Troopers game the medic gets a Grenade Launcher that can 1 or 2 shot almost any bug with massive AOE, and the Medic also has shitloads of ammo resupply boxes so he basically never ever ever runs out of ammo, and on top of that he can automatically revive himself and nearby teammates so he's basically insane DPS and immortal

Clerics and druids in Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale are surprisingly tanky and do pretty decent damage as well.
