What killed the franchise is the creators refusing to create a straight-up sequel that sticks to the basics while improving on what's already there. Instead we keep getting experimental nonsense like Command's squad-based gameplay with stylus controls or Zero's transforming vehicles and Gyro controls.

That just ain't what Nintendo does with their games outside of super duper selling shit like NSMB, they've always been reinventing the wheel for stuff like 3D Mario and Zelda with new gameplay and control gimmicks every game.

Because all the games she starred in weren't that good and contributed to the series decline. They also believe she's the best thing to be included to the series despite Krystal past her sex appeal kinda sucks as a character. No seriously her telepathy is useless and she has among the worst stats in the games with nothing she excels at not to mention her character is cardboard.
Assault was good though
It wasn't. It had worse swing levels than the 64 ones it ripped off, awful shooting controls and levels, an unmemorable multi-player, stupid story, bad animations, bad sound effects, and a very short campaign that felt rushed. It is still the worst reviewed star fox game by critics and the first star fox to fail to surpass one million sold. Unlike adventures which was quickly converted from an unrelated title, assault had no excuse for it being how it turned out.

You mean the dual stick option on a controller not built with that in mind that still had bad sensitivity feel? Even among other shooters assault with dual stick still feels notably worse.
How does that make it any better? The default controls work good since it helps make aiming easier.
It's a weird and sad case of a character that was meant to be the co-protagonist of her own IP that ended up being hijacked to become something it wasn't, further interviews reveal that she was really just meant to be removed from the game entirely in the transition but was sparred because Miyamoto and Imamura were wanting a sexy woman in Star Fox anyways. From there she somehow became the perceived face of everything that went wrong with the series after 64 and it feels like Nintendo was attempting to cater to the crowd that felt her and her games 'ruined' the series by more or less rebooting everything with Zero, and ironically that ended up killing the series for another decade.

Pokemon isn't made by Nintendo, it's made by Game freak & it isn't one of Miyamoto's brainchildren so it doesn't need to follow this line of thinking to the letter. Also, Pokemon has added gimmicks to their games since Gen 6 with stuff like Mega Evolution (one could also say since Gen 3 with Double Battles if you'd like).
