The most BASIC rule of storytelling is to use your established characters to establish new characters and have unique interactions with them. And yet in Teal Mask

>You and LITERALLY WHO, RANDOM npc characters pair up with the new characters
>Penny, Arven or literally any of Team Star don't interact with any of them
>This would have cost nothing graphically and taken up literally no resources
>Gamefreak literally was just too lazy to write a story/dialogue using their established world

Gamefreak simps, once you get their wiener out of your throat, what's your excuse for this?

You shouldn't, though. You'll get bodied by Carmine's Poltchageist.

Im pretty sure shit starts at level 12 if you go there immediately, which is lower then the Grass Gym and Rock Titan both (though those are still easier by virtue of being like 2 and 1 Pokémon compared to the 3 Carmine has in her first battle) and it "ends" (IE you catch Ogerpon) at level 20 or something. It is only if you done the the Arven,Nemonas and Pennys storylines (IE: Can start The Road Home) that the levels are pumped up to the higher levels, it isn't really a Peony situation.

I'm speaking from experience. I had to stall with healing item spam until he Poltchageist ran out of Mega Drain charges and I could get my Fletchling in to chip it to death.

My favorite part of any Pokémon game was to get rekt by Peony's Level 70 Pokémon, pass through high-level Pokémon to enter the Max Lair and using rental mons to beat others mons all the way for a chance to beat and capture a Level 70 Suicune while my mons are around level 10.

You can go to Kitagami very early in the story, before (You), Nemona, Arven, and Penny become friends proper.

Probably because they want to put the focus of the story on the new characters and not make it an unfocused mess.

I'm glad they did DLC 1 on its own "universe" outside the Paldean cast, because Kiki and his sister were able to establish themselves pretty well. Now DLC 2 will combine BOTH stories (main and DLC 1) into 1 single storyline. It's literally perfect, considering DLC 1 is part 1, not completely finished.

Nothing works better for establishing new characters than the MC being a fish out of water. Having new characters join in with the main cast right off the bat will end up awkward, as awkward as when there were surprise guests appearances in shitty sitcoms.

Sorry, no can do, GF couldn't possibly have the resources to write two separate scenes depending on if you do the story before or after beating the game.
It's completely unrealistic for that to happen in a game that sold 20m copies.

Yeah the problem with that is if someone starts and finishes it prior to beating the game, beats the game proper, and then learns afterward they go fricked out of going on the trip with established characters instead of literally who's just by virtue of doing the DLC when it was actually available that's a horrible look for GameFreak.

              >just replay the entire game to experience this 5-6 Hour DLC in a way you prefer lol
Or, and hear me out, they can do what they did now and make a few people unhappy in order to not inconvenience a whole other group that the DLC is literally marketed towards and go ahead, and then go ahead give the people who're disappointed right now what they want in the second part, which can only be done after it makes sense for your friends to want to go with you somewhere. Sounds good?

Bro shut the frick up, Fire Emblem has literally done this since 2012 with their DLC and their storytelling is way more in depth.

No, he isn't actually play the DLCs for some of the games before you act like you know what you're talking about. In FE12, Nyna and Hardin's arcs for example take place before the main story and add to the main story regardless. In Three Houses, the Cindered Shadows DLC is a midquel, and adds in the main characters to the DLC without compromising the main story, it goes on during it, as a sidequest.

They could have easily done it.

    >The most BASIC rule of storytelling is to use your established characters to establish new characters and have unique interactions with them.
They did. Jacq fills that exact purpose as a way to make a connection between Briar and Paldea.
The Teal Mask story itself doesn't need any of the main game's characters as it can stand on its own with Kieran, Carmine, Kitakami, and the new Pokemon. Adding in a character like Nemona or Arven would make it so the story either revolves around them, or that they would be reserved for making quips and following you around when that's out of character for them to begin with as they have their own agency and goals (and no reason to be in Kitakami).

  10. 8 months ago

Because the story isn't about them and if the kids were replaced with the main story gang people would be asking why the main story gang came along if they weren't involved in the DLC story at all.

Also I'm fairly sure part of the point of Kitakami is to feel foreign to Paldea so having people you know there would cut into that.

What aspect of the Teal Mask story do you feel like was made worse due to the lack of Paldea characters? Why would they want to be in Kitakami, and how would cramming all of them in there actually help Carmine and Kieran's characters?

            Anonymous

You’d have to do more than just “modify the dialogue” because the characters would be completely different and have different motivations. If you replace the random students with Nemona, Arven, and Penny you can’t just push them to the side and focus on Carmine/Kieran because your friends would want to hang out with you.
A mysterious and powerful ogre? Nemona would want to battle it.
A magical pool that lets you talk to the dead? Arven would want to try speaking to his parent(s).
A bunch of outdoor activities and interacting with strangers? Penny wouldn’t want to and would just try to stick with you.
It wouldn’t be as easy as just dragging and dropping new character models in, you’d need to effectively rewrite the entire DLC.

    >'Victory Road' focuses on Nemona, Geeta, and the Pokemon League
    >'Path of Legends' focuses on Arven, his Mabosstiff, and Koraidon/Miraidon
    >'Starfall Street' focuses on Penny/Cassiopeia, Team Star, and Clavell/Clyde
    >'A Way Home' focuses on Arven, AI Sada/Turo, and Koraidon/Miraidon
    >rarely do these storylines ever overlap save for 'A Way Home' specifically since it is meant to serve as a conclusion to the base game
    >this is all fine
    >'The Teal Mask' focuses on Carmine, Kieran, Ogrepon, and the Loyal Three
    >the player has the ability to stop or progress through the storyline at any given time like the first three stories
    >this is a problem
It is all genuinely fine. The Teal Mask as a whole isn't entirely intended to be a post-game experience despite releasing about a year after the base game did. TTM is effectively no different from VR, PoL, nor SS.

It's because Teal Mask is treated like Penny, Arven and Nemona's story arcs, just for Kieran and Carmine. Indigo Disc will require you to have completed the entire game.

Because it would be too much effort to include anyone other than Nemona, who basically remains the same character throughout all of SV.
Meanwhile Arven has a clear arc and the urgency of making sure his best friend and surrogate guardian doesn't fricking die, and Penny's too busy being an autistic shut-in until Starfall Street is finished.
But at the same time, ALL of their inclusions as characters in Kitakami would be nonexistent levels of worthwhile if you made them come along Post-Credits, because ultimately the story is about Carmine and Kieran, with a little bit of Briar to set up for Indigo Disk. And judging from Kieran's trajectory, it's more than likely Hidden Treasure of Area Zero will focus in on him, Briar, Terapagos and potentially Heath himself, while the original Area Zero friend group are nothing more than an afterthought who you can talk to Post-HToAZ for a bit of new dialogue.
