I can see it next game assuming Square Enix sticks around, and barring any acquisitions or other circumstances I feel Nintendo will hit them up due to their content in Smash being so popular. You had to have FF and DQ in some forms first, and Sora had precedent from the Smash Ballot that led to Ultimate as a whole. Crono was also mentioned as part of that “Seven Squares” leak, which seems very notable now after how the other characters on that were handled.

Problem with Bandana Dee is that hes just underwhelming in every regard, and a problem that Zelda has with Smash too, in where any potential idea for a 4th character just gets shot down for being 'lame' in comparasion.
Kirby is one of those series where pretty much every notable character is equally full of potential, heart, and imagination. All Hal needs to do is make a game that brings one of them into the spotlight and use that one, lots of people ask for more Marx and Adeleine. Unfortunately they just keep spotlighting Bandana Dee as their go-to guy, despite him being probably the worst of the bunch.

Bandana Dee looks bad now because KatFL made the only co-op character in the game and there's no option to play as another Kirby. Kirby games stay fun because you can try out any of the powers and see how they work or just eat and spit stuff, Bandana Dee doesn't let you do any of that, he's just one ability for the entire game. Getting stuck with Bandana Dee as the second player is like giving your friend one piece of candy to suck on while you eat the rest of the bag in front of him.
Basically they hurt Bandana Dee's chances at being a good character like the main three by trying to make him Kirby's Luigi, something he's fundamentally not equipped for and never will be. The only character that could possibly be satisfying as Kirby's Luigi is Gooey, since he can do whatever Kirby can and the two are like kindred spirits.
I just don't get why they'd make Bandana Dee the only 2P option, wouldn't everyone want to play Meta Knight or Dedede if a second Kirby isn't an option?

From a series with characters like Marx, Magalor, Galacta/Morpho Knight, Taranza or hell, even giving dickygays Adeleine+Ribbon, Dee sucks. Spear is a boring ability on top of that. Even within his own games it's more fun to play as other characters and use other abilities.
People mainly criticize his playstyle being locked behind co-op and said co-op ONLY having him playable.
That said, I think Bandana Dee is out of style now. Still like the little guy, but people opened up to more interesting characters from Kirby.

What would Chosen Undead do though? The best I can think of is him being a heavier Melee Link with bombs swapped for firebombs working similarly to Richter's Holy Water and the Boomerang swapped for something else.

Dark Bead makes for a very slow but tracking projectile, not huge damage but decent shield damage.

Sephiroth most certainly is an "anime sowrdsman" that recived the standard sword moveset and has nothing special going on for him.
The other characters you mentioned feel indeed unique in their own way.
Even though we are stuck with the shit cloud versions of Kingdom Hearts I still have to say that Joker and Kazuya are by far the worst possible shill picks ever considering how long it took for P5 to be ported and Tekken not having any fricking game on the Switch at all.
For what it’s worth, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was great on Wii U and the series also had releases on the 3DS and (although obviously archaic) GBA. Think part of the problem is Bandai Namco doesn’t port old games from the series much aside from PSN. If 7 wasn’t possible, basically any other game could be on Switch instead. I at least think Kazuya was worth it to be alongside Capcom and SNK’s fighting mascots, but he was clearly chosen just from being one of the faces of Bamco’s second-biggest IP in recognition.
The problem with Joker is that there’s currently no other pick like him. If we saw crazy stuff like 2B or Heavy join, for example, it would be less out of the blue. It took until late this year for Persona 5 to hit Switch, and I think every other Fighters Pass pick after Joker was fairly par for the course. I still enjoy Joker since I mostly love P5 and find his fighting style to be fun, but he’s definitely the flimsiest third-party pick to dare. Three, but this is part of the problem. Ultimate is still a fun game to play for the most part, but it couldn't carry itself as strong after a whole year of hype after launch. That's not even factoring in actual hits towards said hype, like a slower release schedule in 2020, the whole competitive controversy, and of course the mediocre online. I'd also say that ending free content updates less than a year in, barring a fairly niche Spirit replay option, was a lame call. We didn't even get any extra stages besides Small Battlefield.
I think personally for me, Smash Run should've returned at some point as the last bonus mode. I always thought that having it come with Steve's update would've been a perfect move, since you could have some of the hostile mobs as (some of the) new enemies in it to coincide.
Also some free stages would've been certainly nice too, as you said.
I love Smash Run, but I had little hope it'd actually return. Still sad we missed out on some new enemies being added, let alone all the changes and improvements that could have been implemented.
