As someone that thinks XY is shit, it was pretty fun while it was still alive. Something about the UI design and certain features made it a lot more pleasant to play than anything post-Gen 6 (ORAS counts as well).

Certain places in the game still kept up the illusion that Kalos was fun. Lumiose, while a mess, was novel. The stretch from Lumiose to Korrina's gym was pretty good. And then there was the autumnal area I forgot the name of.
After all of this wore off though, the games are very hollow. But it was definitely a far better time to be a fan back then. A lot more positivity despite all the flaws.

Playing Johto for the first time was incredible, the jump in sprite quality + the addition of Color made it a momentous sequel that somehow met the bar that the first Pokemon set.
This is just the changing of times. New generations will always 'rebel' against the favorites of the previous generation. The key is to exploit the zoomers bias with your deeper range of experience/perspective

The sprites in Gen 2 are art, they took angles and had unique character that the 3D models of today lack. Not only were the sprites better, they were in Color for the first time. i loved the phonecall system cause when i played it i was a dumb kid and had basically no clue where i was going so i would just be walking around random towns and routes battling wild pokemon and then responding to trainer calls to battle them i remeber when i finally got to the pokemon league i had battled so many wild pokemon and trainers instead of just playing the game linearly i battered the entire league with one pokemon
