Like two years back Naoki Yoshida confirmed it but said "yeah frick that i'm not doing it again once was enough lmao". Nothing was confirmed in production but its one of those things like Nomura going "oh yeah after FF7R part 3 we are doing FFX-3" that people just slept on because its so far away.
it just doesn't seem like something they'd do. even squeenix and its 'throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks' methodology manages to pull their asses out of the fire, its not really out there enough.
2nd gen mmos are stagnant, and 3rd gen won't come about until VR visors are ubiquitous and augmented reality is affordable. i could see them preparing a foundation for said platform but they have too much of a cash cow in ffxiv to try and cannibalize or double down on making what would probably just be a copy of it.
