The info graphic didn't show that DS doesn't play GB games, and Wii U doesn't play GCN without homebrew. Switch 2 will probably play Switch games, but it wouldn't surprise me if they try some upgrade fee for games to take advantage of better hardware.

Like how the WiiU did it? I don’t care if you get the option to upgrade your games or whatever but at the very least being able to redownload and insert your switch games is a must….

Wii U played everything Wii did, aside from GCN, in Wii mode. The upgrade was to play VC games in Wii U mode with the gamepad.

They also said they would have Gamecub VC on WiiU but never did. It’s why I sold my GC like an idiot

Yeah I think a lot of articles and videos assumed it would happen after that. Kinda like I'm assuming Switch 2 will play Switch cartridges but anything can happen.

I’m okay if the Switch 2 gets an revision that doesn’t have backwards compatibility but the first version should have backwards compatibility at least I hope so

Yeah if it's an iteration of Tegra I would think they'd try to keep it compatible with Switch 1. Even a new cartridge type could have a notch or something so it couldn't be put in a Switch 1 like 3DS cartridges, but still physically accept Switch 1 cartridges. But we'll see I guess.

There was *one* interview with a NoA executive after the original 2011 system reveal who mentioned the possibility of Gamecube Virtual Console. That was it, nobody who actually knew anything about the system itself ever mentioned it.

Damn. It was wishful thinking on my part I guess. Still GC VC is long over due I mean the system is considered retro

i don't really get it. you can not insert a gameboy cartridge into a 3ds. that's not a thing. why does this chart pretend you can?

I think it’s because some games were put on the eshop. Idk I didn’t make the damn thing

yeah but that doesn't mean games you own physically "carry over" to the thing.

anon that's a ds lite and that only allowed you to play gameboy advance games.

        >GBC can play GB games
        >GBA can play GBC games
        >DS can play GBA games
        >3DS can play DS games
The arrows are accurate but they don't pass through several consoles, so a 3DS can't play GB games.

this may be the only way i guess it makes sense.

    1. Physical games, but only physical games are backwards compatible.
    2. Digital games, but only digital games are carried over.

What scenario would piss off the most people?

#1 makes no sense but #2 could happen, like mentioned above, launch / first model Switch 2 with BC but then remove it for a cheaper model.

        >#1 makes no sense
If the new system can read the Switch game cards. But Nintendo doesn't bother to make an online infrastructure where the digitally purchased Switch games carry over. Then it genuinely could be a reality.

The thing is that Nintendo already said that they want to keep and grow NSO so I highly doubt they would have another 3DS / Wii U eshop moment.

Well yeah. I'd hope that too. And would probably even bet on it being more likely than not.
But I've learned to never take things like this for granted. Them being moronic is still a very real possibility.

I still have my DS Lite (18 years old I think) and 3ds (10 years?). Both work perfectly.

And when they don't? Emulate or play something else.

What does the multiple red lines signify anon? Partial compatibility? Then why three lines all red?

        Anonymous

Each one represents a console from start of line to the X representing it stops being compatible.
The 3 Xs means the 3ds can play DS games but not GBA, GBC or GB games.

What gets me the most is the Virtual Console. It's the most blatant money grubbing move on the planet: axing it altogether so not only do they not have to honor easily backwards-compatible digital purchases of ROMs from the Wii/Wii U, but also bringing back those games only through either subscriptions or FOMO Disney-Vault-tier anniversary releases.

SNES did not play GBC games. It only played Game Boy games, any "Game Boy Color" games it played were played in Game Boy mode.
