The only AAA game since Death Stranding that actually feels somewhat fresh.

The only AAA game since Death Stranding that actually feels somewhat fresh.

Not a traditional Final Fantasy, not an Ubisoft open world game, not a Soulslike, not even a DMClike; a game that actually feels like it's trying new stuff and not just sticking to established blueprints. Everyone trying to pigeon-hole this into a genre or b***hing about it doesn't meet certain FF quotas is missing the point. That's literally what makes it good.

Because a big appeal of FF is that every mainline can be something completely different? How is XVI any more sacrilegious then FFXI and FFXIV? Those games are MMO's in a franchise of singleplayer games.

And if the game was called another name instead of ff11 what would have changed exactly? Like, sure the games changed but they weren't completely upending their core (I mean, FF8 sort of did with the Junction system but it still played the same with ATB)

Has a lot in common with FF1, some other classics, and Matsuno stuff. Legacy is still there. Your only argument is turn based gameplay, which was a technical limitation from way back when they were emulating dice rolls from tabletop games. Spamming attack in a menu is just a slower version of spamming attack with a button. Even XIV with it's mmo rotations is more of a real-time version of old menu combat.

This is my biggest issue, XVI is just another triple A movie game. Looks impressive (runs shit), but has 0 substance. They even copied GoT for their story and the only thing FF are some tropes and blatant recalls to XIV because that is the type of FF fans actually want.

But they did go out and say "This is an FF for people who are not fans, people who grew up with GTA and COD." Which by all means is something they can do. Too bad it is already getting outsold by the pre-orders for the Mario RPG remake on amazon. Which, funnily enough is a classical JRPG with 3 homies in a row. Get fricked.

that's all that comes to mind when I see FFXVI being posted around here. spiteful and asshurt chuds furiously swarmed to GoW threads to call it a movie game or mock its QTE's, it was 70%+ of any GOW thread. That behavior can now be rarely found in any XVI thread, even though it's way heavier on cutscenes and QTE's, overall much more of a movie game than both of the recent god of wars.

Because it gives me something to listen to while I run through your semi open world or linear checkpoint level doing pointless busywork. How many times do they need to say "What's that creature doing this far south?" only for Clive to say "The Blight took their homeland, they're looking for food"? Its come up like six fricking times in six different cutscenes. God of War and The Last of Us, for all the shit that people give them about walk/talk simulators, give their characters time to grow outside of traditional movie cutscenes. It would also help to liven up the party for them to be having conversations, or points of interest on the map. Like take the first area in Rosaria, can you name any even remotely interesting landmarks in that open world section? There's an abandoned house with a dock and a shack, and that's really it. Ooo, how wondrous!

          Yes
Some quests I liked were the one with the boy and the wolf in sanbreque, or the one in the hideaway with the apples.

do I ever have to do out of my way to look for sidequests, or do they always tell you all of them via green markers

Its sad that they caved to the RPG homosexuals and filled it with so much slop. Imagine how good this could have been with the filler cut out.

Anyone else find joshua adorable even when grown up? He says stuff like "confound it!" instead of "damn it!"
I'm glad he lived long enough to leave descendants and a record of everything everyone went through, even if it's published as a fantasy book.

    Ok
But I have 1 little question, why did they call it Final Fantasy then op? I wouldn't dislike it if it wasn't trying to disguise itself as a game it's not.

Dude, bahamut fight is the last "spectacle" fight in the game and it happens after titan. Every single boss fight after the bahamut fight is a major letdown including the ultima prime one.

Ultima is such a disappointment, fight is a visual mess too, during the ifrit risen part everything and every attack looks the same its like I'm in fricking P3S all over again

I just beat Titan, so guessing a little past the midpoint. So far the game is fantastic, really feels like final fantasy even if the combat certainly doesn't. It feels complete so far like you hear about the secret Volcano cave, you see it on the map and you go to the secret Volcano cave fight a dumb badguy and a crystal Guardian. This may seem superfluous but it feels like this hasn't happened in an FF game since X.

Not to say the game doesn't have a bunch of flaws. I'm sitting on a mountain of material and yet the blacksmith seems to update like once every 5 years figuratively and literally. While the combat is good I can't help but feel I would like the game more as just a normal ATB game. There's no reason your party members don't at least let you change their equipment/skills, ever SE action RPG has allowed that much.

      doesn't XII do that

It's been so long since I played a game with no ugly people empress Anabella is so fricking hot

there are plenty of ugly people, but the main characters are usually pretty

XII is pretty good about it but at the same time you occupy a very small portion of the map and the Judges who are portrayed as the main bosses are all over the place. Absolutely love hunting down the Lucavi though

You just run in a straight line and fight the same guys for 30+ hours. Modern final fantasy is about as non-interactive as a video game can get while still being called a game.

A friend told me that the japanese song only plays during the final scene if you play the game on japanese, that the rest have a different shitty english song.
Is that true? What is this, the 90's with the anime dubs? lol

Did not feel that fresh to be honest, as a long term player of FFXIV, I feel that the structure of the game is a little too similar.
