I loved this game online, the expansions and a lot of modules. But holy crap, that first singleplayer campaign was one of the worst things in gaming at the time.

I've never played enhanced edition NWN but the old version runs perfectly fine on my PC and doesn't crash. I dunno if Beamdog fricked with any of the writing in the enhanced edition as they often do.
NWN is one of the few things Beamdog did well on. Didn't touch the writing or characters, all improvements to the engine and things to help modders, and easier multiplayer.
That's good. I dunno if there's many classic RPGs to remake left for them but if they do more hopefully going forward they don't touch the writing in them either.

The expansions have a good story though and the OC's story is perfectly fine it's just not as good as Baldur's Gate.

You should look at that first campaign as a (badly) done techdemo and VERY long tutorial because NWN was really ALL about the content creator.
If you actually want to play something good on it either play the expansions or one of the player made modules
