I guess that it can signal to indie devs who might someday be the big boys to get those hot girls in there, though. I love Souls (and Monster Hunter), but good. Fast paced action needs to stay alive and healthy.

I disagree, I feel Japanese games are on average much better than western games and have far better gameplay, the the major exception being any pc-oriented genre (first person games, wrpgs, strategy games, simulation etc) because of the pcs lack of popularity in japan. But when it comes to console genres, action games, platformers, adventure games, etc., Japanese games tend to be superior. Oh, and I suppose western devs are better at sports games as well, I'm a big fan of SSX personally.
Honestly? Japs were mostly known for JRPG’s which were mostly cutscenes and bad gameplay. At best, their adventure and action games were hits and misses (especially since they STILL sell licensed anime slop). Pretty sure Japs are also the reason why so many games are fricking cinematic.
I can't agree, pretty much all arcade genres and ones that evolved from arcade genres are dominated by jap games.
Japan had a time from like 2005 to 2015 when they were associated with bad games, and that's because they abandoned the Japanese style of games.

Regardless, I don't think only games back in the day that "focused on design" had attractive characters. It was kind of a given that if there was a female character, thy should be attractive and have sex appeal. Now it's the opposite and a female character having a titillating design is the exception and everyone makes a big deal about it every single time it happens. If this game came out even just 2 generations ago, no one would give a shit about the main characters design.
