American cops are so afraid of getting hurt there is no upper limit to the number of civilians they will let die before trying to engage if someone poses even a theoretical threat to them. Any PC worth their salt would just take the cop's gun and shoot him.

I cast Prestidigitation and create the illusory sound of an acorn falling on a rooftop to panic the Law Enforcement Officer.

I think the worst part about the Acorn incident is that not enough people seem to know the police officer wasn't firing randomly: The officer was unloading everything into the back of his own cop car because he was trying to kill the person he had just placed in the backseat (hands cuffed together and already frisked).

American cops are so afraid of getting hurt there is no upper limit to the number of civilians they will let die before trying to engage if someone poses even a theoretical threat to them. Any PC worth their salt would just take the cop's gun and shoot him.

I think the absolute worst story I heard was maybe 5 years ago where several armed thieves had robbed a israeliteelry store and had escaped in a stolen Amazon Truck with the driver held hostage. The police resolved this situation by blocking traffic with their car and opening fire on the Amazon Truck: the robbers, the driver, and a man walking his dog adjacent to the truck, were all gunned down.
The israeliteels and the truck were all insured for such an event.

Is a deputy different from a police officer in America?
It seems that coverage of shootings or even just media over the previous 100 years treats deputies as less trained versions of police.

"deputy" generally indicates they are working for a sheriff's office, which is a county-level appointment. in smaller towns that can't afford their own police department, they may have an agreement with the sheriff for them to do policework that would ordinarily be done by regular beat cops. the level of training is gonna depend highly on the budget

So what's the difference between the sheriff's office and the police department? What kind of responsibilities do they normally have, and what's the reason of having both a sheriff's office and a police department as separate things?

What kind of training do American police usually receive, anyways? For that matter, as there are probably people from various countries ITT, what are typical standards for police training around the world? I'm from Finland, myself, and as a small country police training is organized on a national level here, in what I guess is called Police University College in English. IIRC it's a three-year course, comparable to a bachelor's degree.

            >God, imagine
Yeah, from stories I've heard about police from around the world, I'd assume that a good chunk of those three years goes into learning to not shoot people unless absolutely necessary. It seems like a surprisingly difficult skill to master. I mean that at least partially unironically, and without really being that familiar with the specifics of police training, but with some experience with potentionally violent cluents/ patients in other contexts. Handling threatening situations non-violently or with minimal use of force legitimately is a skill that takes time and effort to learn.

              Anonymous

American police training is mostly about when it's okay to shoot people, which can be summed up as "Whenever you feel threatened," and instilling in cadets the idea that the public are an enemy who will kill them at the first opportunity. To paraphrase Dave Grossman, a retired military officer, Christofascist, guy who was allowed to lead state-subsidized seminars for cops on why it's actually fine to kill people just because you feel like it, and man probably consigned to oblivion at birth given his name, among the public, there are wolves and there are sheep, and it the job of the police to be sheepdogs. The sheep will naturally resent the sheepdogs, but they are blessed by the privilege of never having to know in just how much danger from wolves they are, so their bleating should be ignored. Grossman's repugnant philosophy of righteous violence ignores the fact that, in a real herd of sheep, a sheepdog who routinely eats the sheep just because frick you what are you going to do about it would be rightly killed and, if it happened enough, some shepherds would start wondering why they keep sheepdogs in the first place.

a sheriff is an elected official at the county level; they hire deputies. police chiefs are typically appointed by local governments.

sheriff offices frequently perform typical law enforcement for unincorporated communities and other rural settlements. more generally, they also run county-level jails and enforce torts (repo, eviction, etc)

      Anonymous

A deputy is a member of a sheriff's department. While police departments are ever part of the local municipal force or larger provincal body such as state troopers, sheriff departments usually serve unincorporated communities. Usually at the county level. However one shouldn't necessarily think of them as rural. For example the Maricopa sheriff's department holds large sway in local Arizona politics. Though admittedly not as much as in the heyday of Joe Arpaio. Guy had a whole media persona to facilitate his political aspirations. Should mention that Sheriff is an elected position unlike say a police Commissioner, but incumbents will usually serve for many terms sometimes entirely unopposed depending on the population and political landscape. As for corruption, honestly about the same as regular cops. Both the LAPD and the Los Angeles sheriff's department are notorious for their less than ideal actions as an example. They also have their own gangs, with tattoos and everything. Training, well police training is a whole can of worms. You'll get weird sheep dog warrior monk motivational speakers mixed with regular training, questionable accreditation practices for courses and instructors, and whatever political ideologue thought was neat after a law and order binge session.

It's actually hard to get information on police practices and training for comparisons because every department has it's own independent system and there's really not any agency overseeing or regulating it. So you get situations where some guy can say he has a fool proof method for determining guilt with his 911 Call Analysis method to determine a caller's guilt or deception. And despite no real evidence for testing for that he can teach it to thousands of officers in dozens of different departments.

a deputy also answers to the sheriff, who must STAND for election by the community they wish to police. so shitty sherif's with shitty deputies are almost always fired very quickly by the people.
IF american law enforcement was ONLY sheriff's.
      IF qualified immunity was shitcanned
IF civil asset forfeiture was shitcanned

american law enforcement would be much much better off.
