Maybe if the bubble hadn't popped and Microsoft hadn't forced stagnation onto the market. A PS3-era game can easily be swapped with a PS5-era game without anyone noticing, potentially people will remark that the PS3 era game looks technically more impressive and is more fun than their usual games if they aren't used to games playing themselves.
We have only started including gyro in gameplay for non-gimmick purposes within the last 6ish years and that was a launch feature of the PS3.
As someone who distinctly remembers their past lives, I remember being paid off by CIA operatives to pilot a plane. Checkmate.
If a game came out today that looks like it's on PS3 you wouldn't say hey that looks retro, you'd say hey that looks like shit.
It might be running at a lower resolution, but it wouldn't look that much worse.
cope balding 50 year old manchild the world has moved on from 2006
The industry crashed between 2007-2010 and never properly rebuilt itself, it literally hasn't moved on.
6th gen is still very different from what came after. There was still a lot of experimenting with game design going on at the time and there were a lot of distinct visual styles even among AAA releases. Compare that to 7th gen and beyond where everything became muted color FPS, epic setpiece TPS, and open world action game/ARPG with the exact same UE3/UE4 art style.
6th gen was already prototyping 7th gen.
The SNES was retro the minute the PS1 came out. Hell, so was the PS1 the minute the PS2 came out. We all felt the world change, not even due to calendar dates, the new era began before our eyes.
Zoomers literally can't comprehend this because GTAV and Skyrim and COD 4: Modern Warfare have been the bestsellers their entire conscious lives. The PS3 and 360 will never be retro because the PS3 and 360 generation never fricking ended.
This.
What came after the Wii, 360 and PS3? Literally just an OCed Wii and PCs.
I was born in 2005.
I'm now 18 and it still hasn't registered in my brain.
I'm a zoomer. 25 year olds are not zoomers. They were born before the turn of the millenium, hence millenials.
>all other vidya boards are shitholes >they're shitholes because they keep banning me when I try to stealth bbc-post, make ecchi threads, or generally try to be a shitty Gankerirgin outside my containment zone.
Its true, maybe look up the definition?
Vintage is an age, retro is a style. This os not a vidya only thing.
If games never completly change in design, even in the year 3156, the ps3 would still not be retro
You know what's most sad about this?
It's not the passage of time, rather the reason why we perceive the PS3 as not being as old as the SNES was when the PS3 was launched, being that videogames haven't progressed as much in the same span of time.
From SNES to PS3, games changed drastically, both graphically and at their core in how the mechanics and gameplay are shaped thanks to the new available tech, even giving birth to entire new genres: there's no game from the PS3 era that look or feels even remotely close to a SNES era game, even the ones the genres haven't changed much(like 2D side scrollers and metroidvanias) have evolved enough to play in completely different ways, and similarly, there's no SNES era game that comes even remotely close to feeling or looking like a PS3 era game(this might sound obviously stupid, but in a moment you'll see how it's not), but when it comes to comparing current gen games and PS3 era games? Can we say the same? No we can't, we fricking can't. Games have evolved graphically since the PS3 sure, but there are still a ton of AAA games that still look and feel like a PS3 game with just a graphical make over, nothing has drastically changed, and new mechanics are mostly just a tech improvement over an already existing(and often overused) mechanic.
To sum it up, in 15 years, we went from Super Mario World and Sonic 3 to The Last of Us and Red Dead Redemption, but in another 15 years, we went from The Last of Us and Red Dead Redemption to....slightly better looking The Last of Us and Red Dead Redemption.
I think that you think "retro" is a term of endearment or a right of passage and not just a descriptor for the prior era's style. Because of this you think that older people are gatekeeping that word from younger generations. It couldn't be farther from the truth. You can make retro games and retro consoles today. NES PS1 SNES classic and many many AAs and indies are examples of this.
imagine the N64 and PS2 came out and all devs were too braindead to make any games for it and just kept putting out snes final fantasy clones and dos remasters. thats the age we're in except VR came out and the only decent game for it is HL alyx

I ended up playing my PS2 backlog on it more than PS3 games at the time. Shame that unit eventually YLOD'd on me a few years later and had to replace it with a Slim, which meant no more PS2 BC.
He said when it first launch. When the thing finally started to get some fricking PS3 games I started playing more PS3 games. All of the PS3 models that utilized the 90nm CPU die all had a design flaw (thanks nVidia) which causes it to crack, so a YLOD was guaranteed via regular use regardless.
I wouldn't know, but when mgs4 came out an acquaintance blew his check on a ps3 and that and I don't think i even touched the controller because he was so deep into it and borrowing someone elses tv with hdmi. we all crowded around in amazement.

I think the difference is at that time the idea was create an experience like local multiplayer gaming (social, informal and casual) but online and enhanced. Halo 3 is a really good example right? Sometimes you'd play with people you'd never seen before and they'd have these weird, experimental modes too.
That's why MCC, even with the same game is different. The social experience is largely gone and people are after a nostalgia hit with the most popular modes. You don't get that creativity loop and people sharing random things anymore.

Yeah, it's weird. Like the mid-late 00s feels like it was only a couple of years ago for me but the 90s/early 00s feels like a fricking forgotten age.
Same here bro, same here. I still remember my Mom having puffy hair on the early 90s and wearing those huge coats with shoulder pads.
Damn. Those really were everywhere.

20 years ago was the mid 90's, specifically 1996

So does this mean GTA V is a retro game by that logic? Since it's just a ps3 and 360 game after all.
PS3 and XBOX360 are the end of games as art and beginning of games as slop.

PS3 isn't retro at all going by this definition.

>Sony is still manufacturing PS3's for server blades to run PS now games.
Proofs?
It's a known fact the PS3 streamed games run on PS3 hardware at a server farm.
Remember when Xbone released and Microsoft store was taking trade-ins of PS3s, would be funny if those all got sold back to Sony.
That hardware has existed for a long time though, PSNow was started during the PS3's lifecycle.
I wish sony would port some ps3 exclusives to pc. All i need is higher frames and resolution
RPCS3 solves that without giving californians any money
Over half of Sonic's history has taken place after sonic 06
Halo 3 is now older than Doom was when Halo 3 came out
