Maybe if the bubble hadn't popped and Microsoft hadn't forced stagnation onto the market. A PS3-era game can easily be swapped with a PS5-era game without anyone noticing, potentially people will remark that the PS3 era game looks technically more impressive and is more fun than their usual games if they aren't used to games playing themselves.
We have only started including gyro in gameplay for non-gimmick purposes within the last 6ish years and that was a launch feature of the PS3.

As someone who distinctly remembers their past lives, I remember being paid off by CIA operatives to pilot a plane. Checkmate.

If a game came out today that looks like it's on PS3 you wouldn't say hey that looks retro, you'd say hey that looks like shit.

It might be running at a lower resolution, but it wouldn't look that much worse.

cope balding 50 year old manchild the world has moved on from 2006

The industry crashed between 2007-2010 and never properly rebuilt itself, it literally hasn't moved on.

6th gen is still very different from what came after. There was still a lot of experimenting with game design going on at the time and there were a lot of distinct visual styles even among AAA releases. Compare that to 7th gen and beyond where everything became muted color FPS, epic setpiece TPS, and open world action game/ARPG with the exact same UE3/UE4 art style.

6th gen was already prototyping 7th gen.

The SNES was retro the minute the PS1 came out. Hell, so was the PS1 the minute the PS2 came out. We all felt the world change, not even due to calendar dates, the new era began before our eyes.

Zoomers literally can't comprehend this because GTAV and Skyrim and COD 4: Modern Warfare have been the bestsellers their entire conscious lives. The PS3 and 360 will never be retro because the PS3 and 360 generation never fricking ended.

              This.
What came after the Wii, 360 and PS3? Literally just an OCed Wii and PCs.

You know what's most sad about this?
It's not the passage of time, rather the reason why we perceive the PS3 as not being as old as the SNES was when the PS3 was launched, being that videogames haven't progressed as much in the same span of time.
From SNES to PS3, games changed drastically, both graphically and at their core in how the mechanics and gameplay are shaped thanks to the new available tech, even giving birth to entire new genres: there's no game from the PS3 era that look or feels even remotely close to a SNES era game, even the ones the genres haven't changed much(like 2D side scrollers and metroidvanias) have evolved enough to play in completely different ways, and similarly, there's no SNES era game that comes even remotely close to feeling or looking like a PS3 era game(this might sound obviously stupid, but in a moment you'll see how it's not), but when it comes to comparing current gen games and PS3 era games? Can we say the same? No we can't, we fricking can't. Games have evolved graphically since the PS3 sure, but there are still a ton of AAA games that still look and feel like a PS3 game with just a graphical make over, nothing has drastically changed, and new mechanics are mostly just a tech improvement over an already existing(and often overused) mechanic.

To sum it up, in 15 years, we went from Super Mario World and Sonic 3 to The Last of Us and Red Dead Redemption, but in another 15 years, we went from The Last of Us and Red Dead Redemption to....slightly better looking The Last of Us and Red Dead Redemption.

I think that you think "retro" is a term of endearment or a right of passage and not just a descriptor for the prior era's style. Because of this you think that older people are gatekeeping that word from younger generations. It couldn't be farther from the truth. You can make retro games and retro consoles today. NES PS1 SNES classic and many many AAs and indies are examples of this.

Objectively speaking the PS3 should be retro. But the problem with that line of thinking is that during the 7th gen era the "modern game" became the standard. The "modern game" was invented during the 6th gen, but 7th gen is the era where it became universal.

Far Cry 3 is fundamentally the same game as Far Cry 6. It plays the same.
Gears of War 1 plays the same as Gears 5.
The last of us 1 plays the same as the last of us part 2.

In terms of gameplay gaming has stagnated since the 7th gen. Someone who's 16 now playing a game from 2007 won't experience as large of a gap as someone who was 16 in 2007 playing a game from 1991. The difference is

Yeah, SNES games already felt very retro back in the 7th gen, but 7th gen games still don't feel retro now.

So does this mean GTA V is a retro game by that logic? Since it's just a ps3 and 360 game after all.

PS3 and XBOX360 are the end of games as art and beginning of games as slop.
Upgrading your slop dispenser will not make the first one "retro"

      lol no

Games became slop when Sony entered the market with the Playstation and heavily pushed "cinematic gaming" which the masses gobbled up and loved and still gobble and love today.

sony's idea of "cinematic" games back in the 90s was far different than the point-and-click slop that plagued the PC gaming scene at the time. it's sad because they got the balance between gameplay and cutscenes just right in the early 2000s, then it all went to shit in the 7th gen.

I don't understand. If 00s goths, music and blackberry phones can be retro why can't the 7th gen consoles?

    PS3 is not retro.

The only people who think it is will make threads like this, act like morons when people like me inform them that it's not, and it's only because their brain can't conceptualize why this is without it being spoonfed to them.

Frick your mental malfunctions or whatever money making scam you're up to. That shit ain't retro

I don't care what you think, but the 7 generation of consoles was the golden age of multiplayer games on consoles, nothing after that came close to that, there were so many good experience back then before COD started to be copied
    >MGSO2
    >Halo3
    >Killzone2-3
    >The assasins creed multiplayers
    >MAG
    >Sarhawk and warhak
    >a lot of tactical 3rd person shooter games like Ghost Recon and Socom
    >Uncharted 2-3
    >LBP 1-2
    >Bad company 1-2
    >Peak COD
There was a real push of trying to create a gaming communnity by companies back then, things like Playstation Home would never be recreated again

      >LBP
Love that they completely fricking shelved LBP after 3. They're too fricking scared to deal with a online community nowadays the only thing were gonna get out of LBP is some shitty singleplayer game made by Sumo Digital.

At that, Dreams has none of the charm that LBP had. Shame too, was my favourite childhood game.

I think the difference is at that time the idea was create an experience like local multiplayer gaming (social, informal and casual) but online and enhanced. Halo 3 is a really good example right? You'd have time before and after the game to talk shit, you could group up with the people you just played, you could create and share maps/modes with eachother which was also accessible during those pre/post-game lobbies and you could drag people with you to play custom matches. People were making random maps, a lot of them were honestly rubbish but it made a loop where groups were sharing random maps with eachother so there was always something new to play. Sometimes you'd play with people you'd never seen before and they'd have these weird, experimental modes too.
That's why MCC, even with the same game is different. The social experience is largely gone and people are after a nostalgia hit with the most popular modes. You don't get that creativity loop and people sharing random things anymore.

    Xbox 360/PS3 aren't retro yet.
They didn't become obsolete until 2013, so 2033 is when they become retro.

The last great jump in gaming was the transition from the 6th gen to the 7th gen. Since then there hasn't been any big changes.

It's not retro because it has games that launched on that console that are avaiable on current gen PS5 (and not in a retro bundle or something like that)
    GTA5 for instance
It will probably be retro by next gen

PS triple will never die, sony has no choice but to support it until they can emulate on a future console.

Sony is still manufacturing PS3's for server blades to run PS now games.

VR is the next logical step, but the price barrier is still too high, so it'll probably be a few years before that becomes viable. And it will take the death of most AAA studios as well.
