Yeah, as Bethesda Fallout, it was OK. Things only went downhill from there
Fallout 3 was good episodic fun in wacky 50’s b-movie land. It’s fun in that “just pick a direction and you’ll soon hit a vignette” way. I’ve never heard a complaint about it that wasn’t “New Vegas was better”, which is irrelevant because one game being better doesn’t make another worse especially when their gameplay and story loops are so different, or “It’s too wacky!” , which have you even played 2? I guess you could just not like Bethesda 1st person over isometric turn based, which fair enough. But in that case why do we hear nothing bad about New Vegas gameplay?
I replay both and it works because they both try different things. New Vegas isn’t just more or better Fallout 3 (though it is a better game). Fallout 3 is like an old syndicated tv show ala Columbo. You have fun short 30-60 minute adventures that are completely self contained and can be done in any order with no need to stress about how this affects the next “episode”.
New Vegas is all about building a single cohesive “entity” (The embryonic nation of the Mojave) and learning what makes it tick, how literally everyone and every communities actions affect all the others. And then deciding where and how your character is going to fit in to this jigsaw puzzle and how fitting yourself in changes the whole web of connections.
In short: Grug replay two game cuz Grug get two funs.
Fo3 is also in and around dc which got nuked harder than anywhere else in the country so its no wonder you can nation build like in NV, everyone always forgets that somehow. Plus nv was the only place that had even some of the nukes shot down, and it's still a mess

Good, we need neither of these games. Whatever will come next should play to the strength of the people making it, and feature new factions. Rehashing eternally the hecking NCR, enclave, BoS or whatever is creatively bankrupt. The setting allow for localized lore and it should use it to make cool new things.
