Yeah I'm also watching Shogun and pulled the trigger to buy this game. What am I in for?

      Did you buy everything?
Regular Shogun 2 is more or less a Medieval 2-esque experience. Same with Rise of the Samurai. In terms of combat and strategy, that is.
Fall of the Samurai is like Empire or Napoleon mixed in Medieval 2, you get your line infantry facing off against katana charges and cannons that might as well have laser sights on them. It's very fun and chaotic.
The naval battles are fricking great as well, regular Shogun 2 is ships stacked with men shooting arrows at each other, or you can eventually unlock cannons and tear shit up.
Fall of the Samurai naval combat has got to be the best in the series, hands down. Steamships armed with explosive shells lobbing them at each other is so satisfying to see, and because they're explosive you get FAR more magazine detonations which look spectacular at night. All in, 10/10 game for me.
The soundtrack is also fricking great, really makes the atmosphere alongside the great sound mixing (the matchlock muskets and cannons sound sooooo good when fired).

It's alright, enjoyable to most IMO. It's a MC travels back to alternate timeline plot w/ Harlem, but it's before the Isekai craze, so its better written than the WEB/Fanfic derived shit now.

this isn't just nostalgia goggles, Shogun 2 is widely considered the last great Total War game.

Wasn't it, at least from a code stand point, everything after Shogun 2 is based on the engine of Rome 2? It was done to save both money & time I think?
Attila is directly related, and it's code base is used for Warhammer 1 which is built up until breaking point. While Troy is a 'fork' of Warhammer which is directly related to Pharaoh. I'm not too sure what's up with Three Kingdoms.
Hence why there isn't really a uniqueness to each of the games as much both mechanically and in gameplay feel?

          Basically yes.
Shogun 2 at it's core is still a product based on napoleon and empire.

        >Shogun 2 is widely considered the last great Total War game
Absolutely untrue, it's considered the last great Total War game by one autistic e-celeb and his followers. Ask the average person who thinks Total War is bad now and they're more likely tell you Medieval 2 was the last good one, before the battle engine was overhauled to be shit and the games became known for extreme bugginess.

GW sure put a lot of effort investing in vidya, rather than their actual /tg/... Frick Age of Sigmar.

Honestly kinda sad that aside from Warhammer, the only two actual historicals defeating Shogun 2 in All-Time Peak is Rome 2 and Three Kingdom. Troy and Pharaoh is WTF happened level of disaster...

Also was Three Kingdoms that good? Or is it like the Nipps and the Chinks' going blood frenzy because of it being Three Kingdoms?

            Anonymous

From the very little I played of Three Kingdoms I actually kinda liked it. It's modern TW so you already know what you're getting into gameplay wise but it was quite fun. I'm willing to bet its the most played purely on the basis the Chinese ate it up on account of the setting.
But in all honesty CA is circling the drain and are in danger of dying after how shit Pharaoh was - for how popular the Warhammer games appear to be I still think they have their issues. I just wish they could make a return to form - give us another medieval game or Shogun 3.

Thanks anon. I only kinda asked, because by release date Atilla (26k) to Britania (22K) and then Three Kingdoms (192K!?); it's a fricking big jump. It's either really good or just China because it's China's population. Pharaoh and Troy only having a single digit after that is a warning call to CA I agree.

The problem with Three Kangdoms is that the Chinese playerbase did eat it up, at first, but they're also fickle as frick and when CA released an expansion in an era that was "insulting to the Chinese people" (i.e. one where the Chinese got ultimately subjugated) they lost their shit and the playerbase numbers crashed.

                >but they're also fickle as frick and when CA released an expansion in an era that was "insulting to the Chinese people" (i.e. one where the Chinese got ultimately subjugated) they lost their shit
Not really, Eight Princes was about a different civil war several hundreds of years after the base game's campaign. The outrage was mostly about them doing a DLC for an entirely different and fairly boring era that has next to no relevance for the Three Kingdoms period and they decided to do this DLC before adding a start date for the later Three Kingdoms period which everyone wanted, the stuff that is the namesake for the whole game and novel.
I was with the chinks on that one, they messed up and then they cut support entirely a couple of DLCs later with the promise that they'll milk the playerbase again in the future.
They ended support for the game before even adding a start date that actually has the three kingdoms lol

Rome 1 and Medieval 2 were messes in similar ways, let's not pretend. Empire was the low point of the franchise when Shogun 2 came out, and the game was a return to form.

Am I the only person that thinks Campaign map variety/freedom is more important than anything else? I like the weighty combat of Shogun 2 and I love the diplomacy of 3K but I got bored after like 3 campaigns of each because they all end up so similar.

R2 and WH Immortal empires just have you in so many different regions with so much freedom to go any direction you want and I find that way more replayable not even from a unit diversity standpoint.

I really hope that CA uses this tech that they have developed to make this giant 500+ Region Immortal empires map to create like the ultimate ancient history map that spans the globe.

Can I get some opinions about Empire vs Napoleon?
I've been thinking about grabbing Empire but I see everyone talking about how Napoleon is just better. Does empire give you more of that freedom like I'm describing? or is the new world stuff like just a gimmick and not really fun or interesting and it's all just Western Europe only?

Napoleon is "probably" better gameplay wise, but if you push the definition it's almost a standalone DLC to Empire. I always enjoyed Empire more, though - the map is much bigger (for obvious reasons) but it had the misfortune of being the first Total War on the Warscape engine and so was riddled with bugs and all sorts of issues on launch which seriously undermined its playability. Just install Darthmod and Empire is a pretty fun game.

Empire with Shogun 2 polish would be a killer game

The problem with Empire is that it was overly ambitious and what they did doesn't fully fit the Total War formula.
Line infantry? That's fine in TW.
Native American warriors marching in neat formations? Vomit inducing.

yeah, asymmetrical warfare isn't something TW can or should try to simulate. I did hate how the native effective the native bowmen were at harassing your line infantry though, until they get BFTO'd by your cav

It was a shortcoming of warscape rather than total war in general. The americas kingdoms campaign as the apaches were one of the most fun I've ever played.

Adding health as a stat was a mistake and killed the feeling of impact your actions had

If some legionary or centurion takes a sword to the neck or gets ran through by a spear wielded by a horseman, he should die no matter how experienced or trained he is

Its laughable how weak cavalry feels to use in the rome 2 engine games and how archers literally just apply damage from afar instead of killing a dozen people at a time with the volleys they had in shogun 2

The biggest victim in all of this are gunpowder units, I cant believe they look the way they do in warhammer when shogun 2 and fots damn near perfected the feel of gunpowder combat.

I felt CA learned from the disastrous launch of Empire (Napoleon had growing pains, too, but was overall much better out of the box) and really got Shogun 2 right. I wholeheartedly agree with the gunpowder combat, it's powerful and impactful and there's a real weight to it. Rome 2's combat overall just felt floaty and disconnected.

        >CA learned from the disastrous launch of Empire

I mean to be fair it did got better over time, but the learning disability of CA is almost on-par with Bethesda.

Yeah, but Rome 2 feels like a reinvention of the franchise in a sense - the way everything looks and feels in TW today began with that game.
Shogun 2 was definitely the 'third time's the charm' game after Empire and Napoleon.

It is truly amazing how much they stuck with Rome II's design despite the fact that it FRICKING SUCKS. Only ToB and 3K have even attempted to evolve beyond it.

The medieval kingdoms mod for attila has some devastating charges but they still feel flaccid despite seeing an entire formation get flattened and rout. Everything just feels like it lacks mass in warscape.

What’s the consensus on this? I’ve ever play Rome 1 because I’m a console player but I’m getting a PC soon and am a huge fan of the era along with Troy. Also, the next Saga game should be based on Sargon of Akkad
