If you're an autist gameplaygay check out Conquest and Engage. They have good maps despite my storygay opinion of them both being my least favorite entries in the series.
We haven't had both good gameplay and story in the same game since the Radiant games though.
If you think RD and 3H have good stories, then SD and NM have great stories and gameplay. Hell, even Awakening and Birthright have good stories by that metric.

My only take away from all these replies is to play all the games myself over time as there's little consensus

Only play Fates if you really enjoy Awakening and want more of it, only play Three Houses if you don't mind heavy handed VN shit like Persona.

Well, they are two different styles of games. Unicorn Overlord looks to borrow more from Ogre Battle. Hope it does well for Vanillaware but it's not the usual type of game that would do well unlike one where you actually control the attacks you use. Maybe I'll be proven wrong. There have been many unexpected games doing well in 2024.
