The Sims

Sims 3 was on sale so I got the game + all DLC on steam. Does Ganker have any advice on ways to play to get the most out of it?

and use these fixed worlds: https://modthesims.info/downloads/all/?u=1515002
also don't clear your cache every time you start the game. thats another moronic myth - the game recreates the cache anyways so you're making it do more work, not less

follow the guide, its worth it. all you actually need though for a min fix install is the usual nraas mc, error trap, overwatch, lazyduchess's smooth patch and simler90's core mod. that group of mods fixes almost everything

i have no idea how it'll run for you anon. the better your comp, the better it'll run. but the store content isn't as big as you'd think either - you can get this stuff from blam's ea store https://blamseastore.tumblr.com/
or sites like games4theworld. screen is from the fitgirl repack so i assume its originally from g4tw

i still had problems with ow and error trap if the game went on for a long time.

what problems? error trap and stuff will report issues, and your game will still have an unroutable sim here or there that cause the error. but you shouldn't see it every day for example - if you do that means there is an actual routing issue somewhere on the map either due to an object or the map itself (hence the fixed maps i linked, but even those aren't perfect).

sims 3 isn't perfect nor am i claiming it to be. but a lot of problems can be fixed with mods and there has been a huge amount of improvements within the last 2 years or so that are very worth checking out imo

First thing you need is NRAAS mods. You definitely want Overwatch, Master Controller, and Story Progression, and as many others as have features you think you'll use. These will help with overall playability and let you fix things if they get broken. I've never tried running the game with all the expansions at once but from what I've heard it's still not the best idea, so if some of them don't really float your boat, don't install them. I'd say at minimum you want Seasons, Generations, and Ambitions (which all feel like they could've been base game content) then build up from there. Also I've heard that Island Paradise is pretty buggy, but I don't use that one. Modding scene is kind of spread out but there's a lot of stuff on modthesims(dot)info, you probably want default skin replacements to make the sims look less potato but you can also find clothes, hair, build/buy items, lots, and worlds. If you want to turn it into an h-game, you're looking for Kinky World. God luck and good speed, anon.

      > Does Ganker have any advice on ways to play to get the most out of it?
      do the following
      >only install the 2 or 3 expansions you MUST have for your playthrough
      >NEVER install all of them
      >install it on your SSD
      >dont install CC
      >never install Late Night, Island Paradise or Into the Future
      >install some NRAAS mods to fix the game's core mechanics (at the least Story Progression to stop the default game from turning the whole town into blonde fat black women after 6 generations)
      >save your game every 5 or 10 min, there's no autosave and it loves to crash
      >accept that the longer you play on a playthrough the higher chance the save will completely break

itd be the best sims game if only they fixed the fricking memory leak in the PC version (Mac version's memory leak got patched though for some reason but not PC)

I was going to let this thread die, but these are some good answers anons. Many thanks

Thanks anon, I've got to give this game a try for the first time in 15 years. I'm going to ignore the advice to not have all expansions installed and see how bad things get on my SSD before restarting.

not him but yes, they do nothing but clog up the game even more.
same with the memories system and intractable loading screens, they should all be disabled asap.

they even broke memories with 3?

nta but memories went off way to often in 3, everything triggered one. and eventually theres a hard limit on the amount of them anyways. its usually suggested (and i agree) to just turn them off entirely.

what the other anon said + the more of them there are, the slower the game takes to load.

this entire post is wrong so i'll break down why
      >DON'T INSTALL
if you're worried about isla being a large map, having it install has no effect on your gameplay on other maps besides you now have access to the items and stuff from the pack.
you do NOT need an ssd.
yes, you can install cc, and i encourage you to as there are many great ports from sims 4 and 2 which add new skills, interactions, objects
late night, into the future and isla are all fine. in fact, isla is a great map - the biggest hindrance is houseboats moving and there is a mod for that.
nraas story progression is a bad mod (probably the only bad mod out of all of theirs) because its aggressive as frick. even when you turn down all the settings, you will get non-stop notifications (until they annoy you enough and you turn them off), it changes to much to fast in game.
as you save your game often, use rotating saves ie: Save0, save1, save2, keep like 10 of them. always save before even attempting to travel and save that as a new file, not over one of your 0-9 saves. never save over your original 0-9 saves until you're back home, just in case (start new saves like egypt0, 1 while there)
your save doesn't break over time unless you let something deteriorate like story progression going full boar and changing your town to the point where theres 50 new people and nowhere for them to live and even then, you can fix it

The problem is the ridiculous load times for everything. The more shit you have, the longer it takes. Trying to customize anything is a nightmare. My best tip for a new player is to find the genie lamp, wish twice, then travel to reset the wish counter. It literally let's you wish for infinite wishes.

          Anonymous

i only have a hdd and use the fitgirl repack with that has all packs and store content. loading time is 5 mins from a cold boot, about 2 mins after that to load a save. i have no idea what people can possibly be doing to create such huge load times. more stuff in your save certainly contributes, but my saves often have university, into the future, egypt, china, france and of course the home neighborhood.

5 minutes from a cold boot anon, not 7 total. after you load a game the first time its cached and will load faster the next time, hence the 2 minutes. i usually leave my comp in sleep mode so 'cold boot' is once a week.

i'm not sure what youre even complaining about anon. 3 runs great with fixes and is the best in the franchise. 2 is still great because it has tons of content and even some more details than 3. 4 is a husk of a game. if you'd like help getting sims 1-3, or medieval working, i'll help.

Mod the frick out of it for the best performance and QoL and also a few minor but still noticeable bugs.

WARNING! Do not let the game run in the background too long if you don't play (like eating dinner, running errands, ...) because it will frick up your game. It will trigger a memory leak that makes a save impossible to load.
Only solution I found was to uninstall and reinstall every single thing.

ok there's a trick that i don't consider cheating and i'm pretty sure it was never patched and i only posted about it a couple of times

around the rich area, and in general rarely around the map, you will find money tree seeds on the ground. it doesn't say money seed but it says something like special or rare seed when you hover over it. just go pick up seeds near the mansions and you'll find some. they respawn after a while.

plant those, the idea is when they are fully mature, you harvest them for a bunch of cash, and the plant dies. i think each one gives like max 3K cash depending on your gardening skills. if the eastern(?) spot is vacant, it will drop another money seed, and the plant dies. after 3(?) times the tree will no longer drop a seed, it just dies and all you can do is just drag it into the trash. but there's a loophole:

if you harvest the money tree and it's not your active household -- the tree never dies. it just keeps generating cash forever.

knowing this i had an entire backyard on a different lot filled with money trees and that was how my sim made his income. basically i was roleplaying a millionaire who became rich from counterfeit money and used his painting skills as his alibi. i would run over there in the middle of the night and basically "pirate" all the money. i played all the vacation DLCs, built wine cellars, guest houses, etc. roleplayed a king pretty much.

i don't know how accurate all this info is anymore cus i haven't touched this shit since like 2011 jfc OP you are late to this game.

Don't install overwatch. It's full of false positives, like thinking a sim that is genuinely waiting for a elevator as being stuck, and constantly spams your notifications in the corner. Whatever it does in the background, is placebo at best for all I care in my tests.
Install Master Controller because it's a generally useful tool to fix some bugged out sim as well as cheats.
Story Progression is a meme both in-game and the mod, unless you're going out killing everybody or doing something stupid like making the total life span of sim a month with the in-game options, it's not going to affect you in any meaningful way.
Unless your CPU is from 2007, you can install and run all expansions without problems nowadays, the only ones that are a complete time bomb is Island Paradise(boathouses) and Late Night(broken nav meshes etc), and fixes for both already exist.
Into the Future, don't bother teleporting to the future. Moving your sim out of a given world in general is a bugged up mess, be it World Adventures or the move out function in the base game.
Don't use one save file often as they will bloat up to hell, causing longer loading times and ultimately breaking. Use "save as" and stagger them out.
Only an idiot doesn't use mods(CC) to play Sims. Whatever problem some jokers have with CC, is like seeing coomers wonder why their savefiles break in their fricked up Skyrim playthrough. Don't use shit that is very script heavy garbage like KinkyWorld, an abandoned sex mod that is full of worthless features that don't even function properly, Ultimate Careers, what have you. A billion hats and clothing won't do shit besides making your Create-A-Sim menu slow as frick, and guess what, even that has a fix for it nowadays.
I have had mixed issues with Smooth Patch, cars and some sims bugging the frick out in the rare occasion, but you're still better off with it than without.

pirating 3 was a nightmare because if you didnt get the update order right the game would break and your saves wouldn't load resulting in a full uninstall/reinstall situation. there were extensive forum guides to help with that. i also did one of those "pirate every single DLC to spite EA because i fricking hate them" runs and with all $1700 of DLC installed you'd get 10fps.

Why do you all like the sims anyway? Those who don't use it for porn

time sink for the unemployed or depressed
if you break down the gameplay it's mostly just watching timers in fast forward. it's then fundamentally just cookie clicker. the player choice and sim interaction inbetween all of that is the only remaining ingredient holding the formula together. plus constantly shoving new content in your face.

I like the progression of starting with nothing and slowly upgrading my house as I get filthy rich. Also raising all the skills, growing all the rare plants, fishing all the fish... it's a good game for people with a "collectionist" mind. For me it scratches the same itch as games like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley.

I like seeing the situations I can get my sims and other random sims into by either manipulating things or having them just happen naturally. I remember installing a mod that removes muscle/weight limits and when my sim was getting arrested for killing someone this giant planet of a man was in the background walking into a restaurant. There were a bunch of sims in the area looking at him in fear and disgust.

It's one of the few games that made my stomach hurt from laughter.
