point laser thing to something puzzles and clone yourself puzzles. the most cliche and tedious puzzles known to mankind. technically there was block pushing in those puzzles so that makes it even worse cliche.
it's still alright game but you better like dem laser directing

Fun puzzles, though if you are more of a veteran puzzle player, you might find the game way too easy. I am AWFUL at puzzles, and I found the difficulty exactly ideal for me, which makes me think it must be very easy for most other people.

You'll also get pretty though repetetive environments, and a story that is mixture of great and well written human side of things, and some trully terrible and shallow "philosophy" that is not really worth paying attention to.
Seriously, the whole "transhumanism" theme of the game is not well handled. The game tries to explore philosophy of mind and does it in a very convoluted fashion, but ultimately does not have anything really interesting to say about it. And it can get borderline obnoxious at times. If you want a game that explores transhumanism and philosophy of mind specifically, you'll be much better served by something like SOMA.
But again, there is a second layer to the storline, the story of what happened to people, one that is purely about relatable characters and their minor struggles, and that side of the narrative is genuinely good.

Overal, it's a fun little distraction, though not one of those games I'd argue you MUST play.

The puzzles in the main game were really easy but some of those admin puzzles in the DLC had me scratching my head for hours. Also stars in the entire game were a great challenge.
I really hope that they spike up the difficulty in the sequel. The setting and the few screenshots look amazing.

Unfortunately I agree about the story. Sometimes it hits the perfect spot which makes it bittersweet but most of the time, the writing was very basic and cringey. The DLC has surprisingly great story and amazing puzzles.

        >Sometimes it hits the perfect spot which makes it bittersweet but most of the time, the writing was very basic and cringey.
Yeah. The people talking about how their time is running out - that was what resonated well with me.
But the philosophy thing... as someone who actually studied this shit for a good while - the game just does not have anything to actually say on that matter. It tries to obfuscate it by making it all sound more important than it is, but ultimately it's just a chain of the more common and popular philosophical texts on this matter with very little context or even shared throughline, just "Look, we know a lot of philosophers talking about philosophy of mind, read our excerpts."

Which does feel - and I hate to use this word, but in this case I think it is fair - pretentious. It felt like they were trying to impress you with how complex these texts sound, hoping that you would not notice that they don't really build up to anything.

I did play this while I was also playing soma, so that may have soured my view of it. Because Soma knew how to use philosophy to create an IMPACT. While in Talos, it's there to give semblance of depth.
And I think that is a clumsy, borderline dishonest approach.

Still loved the game, it's absolutely not a deal breaker for me, just... a bit of a shame overal.

As for Gehenna - that thing just straight up filtered me. I'm too bad at puzzles to get anywhere in that expansion.

You've worded it really nicely and the comparison with SOMA works well. The story in the DLC was based around online interactions between those androids in a TUI forum, where you get a good idea of each user (which you get to rescue via puzzles) and it was handled so much better.
The story is at its best when it's not trying to sound deep. I wish this was the approach they took in the entire game.
          > Still loved the game, it's absolutely not a deal breaker for me, just... a bit of a shame overal.
Ultimately, it's the puzzles that matter but yeah, here's hoping that the sequel has better writing.

i'm thinking of doing the same. also i never played the dlc

The DLC is what made this game go from 7/10 to 10/10.

the puzzles are good, the philosophical questions are fine, the plot is mediocre.

One of the best puzzle games of all time. It's up there with the OG Myst. I am excited for the sequel, it looks like it's going to be bigger and better in every way.

I wonder where they'll even go with the sequel. It has to be a totally different setting surely? Like they wouldn't just reuse the same themes and ideas and world of the first game? That would be disappointing. Whatever they choose to do I will still buy it and play it though, I liked the first one so much

existing, mostly, considering his knowledge and perception were wholly formed through the histories of mankind available to him. if all you could know of humankind is recorded history and never had actual interaction, you might end up like him.

So he is your average anon then. Terminally online and never known interaction with another person.

I wouldn't say that, Milton is untouched in a way that an average anon wouldn't be able to be, a cold, "rational" intellect that doesn't have any outside input is a far cry from the heavily self reinforced cynicism and jadedness obtained from being terminally online. I'd almost say he's the exact opposite of the average anon, thinking about it, since Milton is (mostly) completely isolated, while anons issue is being full bore strapped into the collective shitpile that is the internet.

I have no idea, but I'm guessing they wouldn't do that. Maybe it's gonna be something about how they find out that humans aren't actually extinct, but this is just pure guesswork.

i like myst series and i have nostalgia but honestly riven is the only really great one, the first one is super simple these days. it's interesting historically though

I think Myst will always be the best one simply because it was just such a new and weird experience at the time. Don't get me wrong, Riven is cool too, but it wasn't a mindblowing "wow, this is crazy, I have no idea what's going on" vibe like Myst did.

why does everyone hate those? those were my favorite puzzles in the original game
they were kinda like time travel, your past self had to help your future self and you had to plan accordingly. it made for some pretty interesting puzzles

9/10 of the recording puzzles were just nested puzzles that were immediately driven up to 11.

One of my favorite things about it is that it allows you to break the puzzles/find alternative solutions.
It doesn't go "what? You found an exploit or a different solution from the one we intended?! IT'S PATCHING TIME!" like certain other puzzle games and the devs are fully aware of and even encourage it
like when you finish the last puzzle on your own and at the end one of Croteam's devs spawns in to help you with the final part.
