I had an LCD deck, loved it, bought the OLED deck on release day and I love that too. Sold the LCD for more than I paid for it because I upgraded the SSD inside it. I didn't feel backstabbed at all.

It needs that big screen, I wouldn't sacrifice it for size. It'll be interesting to see if someone can eventually make use of good foldable screens to make the system smaller, but the screen even bigger.

If you're gunna play a native PC game, I have a few suggestions:
      >System Shock: Enhanced Edition
You'll need to do one small tweak but should otherwise run great after that.
      >Astalon: Tears of the Earth
      >Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
It's a port sure, but a really good one. Only issue on deck is the title screen looking like a test screen for the video in the background. Game itself is basically flawless on deck otherwise.
      Some emulation suggestions:
      >Revival Xanadu (PC-98)
You'll want a keyboard for naming yourself (so change the handler for inputs to keyboard in retroarch when you name yourself, and then back to controller for the game itself). buttons used will be a little odd as Y is your confirm button, but it otherwise plays fine on controller.

The Deck actually can run a lot of things pretty well. Lies of P runs great on my standard edition deck, and i got it on sale. I kind of had to keep the quality settings low for Elden Ring, though, so that's probably the limit.

Check out Aperture Science Desk Job if you haven't, it's made for the Deck and I'm pretty sure it's free if you've got one

Other than that, FPS games are somewhat interesting because of the trackpad and that one feature that allows for Gyroscopic aiming; I'm not sure if it's on by default but it's pretty neat to fool around with. I used it to play 2016 DOOM and it was fun for a bit.

Every indie game is fun on the Steam Deck if you already play or used to play a lot of games on portable consoles. You can also just play games that were on portable consoles that are now on Steam, so go ahead and pretend like you've got a comically oversized PSP

Story-focused games with a ton of dialogues. Like (J)RPGs, or the Yakuza series. I've been playing Disco Elysium recently: it controls a bit weird with a controller, but it's comfy on a handheld.

I avoid games that require more than 10W to run at a decent framerate: yes, technically Elden Ring runs on it. At 30 FPS. With the fan howling, and the battery draining in 90 minutes.
I also avoid games that were designed with mouse&keyboard in mind. Again, Baldur's Gate 1&2 are technically playable on this thing... but I'll never get used to moving a cursor with a touchpad.

I've been enjoying bug fables but legitimately anything you could use a controller for and quite a few you'd normally use M+KB too. turn-based strategy games are incredibly comfy on the deck.

How is the battery life for games like that or in general

Depends heavily on hte game as others said. 1.5 hours for something really demanding, up to 8 hours for really simple/light games.

i like retroid pocket 2s, its small and can handle ps1/n64 and (SOME) ps2/gc games

Retroid is good because it's so dirt cheap, but it's pretty much exclusively an emulation box, whereas the Deck can play PC games a lot easier.

I can't say, I really never pay attention to battery life, but non demanding games can easily get 5+ hours, and most emulator games are pretty light on resources

        Anonymous

when you emulate on the launch deck you get like 4-6 hours. The Oled improved battery considerably so i would expect a game like tactics to get 8 hours or so, maybe more.
