By salty boys who want to start console warring slapfights. It's not about the consoles or the games, it's never been about picking a "side". It's just about saying things to attract as much attention and discourse as possible.

Most people don't like retro games, or even play them beyond 5-10 landmark titles. Even on this board 90% of the threads are just about Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Resident Evil, or Final Fantasy.
For most people playing these games is like a checklist to get done with so they're "real gamers" and anything outside of those select titles is just a waste of time

      >Most people don't like retro games,

That's not the extent of it. The most active Ganker posters don't like anything; they don't even want to be alive. It gives them a bit of relief to pick fights, complain, and generally drag down others. If you see a console war on /vr/, ignore its actual text and read the real message: "I wish for death but I'm too afraid of suicide to try it. I wish for death but I'm too afraid of suicide to try it." Etc. - repeating over and over for as long as the conversation continues.

        >Literally how did this rhetoric even become popular in the first place?
Posers and businesses selling prepacked identities to them.
In other words rampant consumerism disguised as "geekdom". Anything that isn't congruent to giving off the popular geek image is immediately discarded as aged, clunky, 'actually bad' and so on and so forth. Turn your customers into fanatics etc.
You can see it action when long dead but popular franchises get new entries, all the marketing will claim something like "back to the roots" or some such and suddenly you will see a huge influx of people who were actually "huge fans" all along. The marketing isn't aimed at existing fans, it's aimed at creating new fans through a sort of shortcut to being part of an existing something.
People have always wanted to be part of the zeitgeist and have a fear of missing out. This is just a way companies can take advantage of it for profit.

      >for most people playing these games is like a checklist to get done with so they're "real gamers"
No, it's a checklist to see if I liked any of them, you autist. Games that I've played through my backlog (or what you would call a "checklist") which ended up becoming favorites are:
      >Leisure Suit Larry
      >Secret of Monkey Island
      >Dark Forces 2
      >Master of Orion 2
      >X-COM
      >System Shock 2
Needless to say of the games that I played and still enjoyed.

      >Even on this board 90% of the threads are just about Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Resident Evil, or Final Fantasy.
That has more to do with the awful sickness of "consolitis", which used to effect more and more gamers each day. But for 1$ day, you can help donate great computer games to these people in need, and cure their sickness.

Perhaps the only thing that has improved in the world of gaming is that there seems to be less console fanboyism today than before. Partly because of technological parity, and also people are buying multiple consoles. The fact that 30 and 40 something year olds are still engaging in fanboy behavior with retro consoles is pathetic. It's like they're still harboring frustrations they had back when their parents only bought them one console and they felt the need to justify to the world why the other ones suck. Grow up, homosexuals

Because the N64 was a fricking travesty of a console.

    >Awkward dipshit controller
    >games were cartridge-based, thus cost more than PS1 games while having 1/10th of the content
    >memory cards all used batteries, so they'll all be useless in the next few years unless you buy brand new third-party ones
    >on top of that, the memory cards corrupted and got damaged way too easily
    >most games had a crispy-smooth FPS of around 18-25 FPS, some even running as low as 8 FPS (BY DESIGN) in certain segments
    >Nintendo essentially forced developers to push the hardware to its limits for every single release in order to compete with the PS1

This is coming from someone who owned an N64 in the 90's. And I would NEVER go back to playing Turok 1 or 2 on the N64. Not even if Nintendo of America paid me to. *spits*

It's a true statement if we're talking about the SNES. A huge proportion of "retro gamers" hold the SNES in very high regard, if not considering it the "best console ever". So, it follows that they would naturally conclude that the vast majority of other console's libraries are also forgettable garbage.
The solution is that more people need to play Mega Drive, PC Engine, Neo Geo, X68000, and Amiga instead. Yes, Amiga.

That depends on the console. Though I feel there is also a bit of math to it - the more games a console has, the more shovelware it will inevitably contain. That's partially why Wii (and to an extent GBA and DS) became the shovelware dumping grounds after a certain point.

the libraries of any given console are riddled with forgettable garbage. or garbage in general.

i think this narrative became a thing on /vr/ (i post on here a lot so i forget /vr/ doesn't represent a sane way of engaging with games) due to Ganker's latent contrarianism. this contrarianism is probably the result of unhealthy coping mechanisms, mental illness... well, i don't want to get all that psychoanalytic. what i'm getting at is most users here fall under the "smarter than average but socially stupid" category, meaning many of us are unable to discuss things in a constructive way. too much skin in the game.

some of us have an attachment to childhood consoles because they remind us of a more innocent time, so if someone says their favorite retro console sucks, it could trigger the frick out of someone who lacks self awareness who will write endless paragraphs rationalizing.

  15. 6 months ago
    Anonymous

It begins as a cope for consoles that had small libraries to write off other consoles as being all shovelware, and inevitably someone will then need to respond by pointing out their console with a small library also has many shitty or mediocre games, probably of a similar ratio.

There's your politically neutral answer without mentioning this happens because morono gaymen has a large sub-community of people that only really think of Nintendo as video games because 99% of the time this slappy fight happens between the PS1 and N64 or PS2 and Gamecube rather than PS1 and Saturn, PS2 and Xbox, or even SNES and Genesis.

      Anonymous

      >SNES and Genesis
SNES fans are constantly deriding the Mega Drive as having "no games", which is pure projection considering how badly the SNES library's quality drops off once you go beyond the top 10 or 15 titles.
You are correct that you don't see this bickering with PS1 and Saturn, or PS2 and xBox, hmm, there seems to be a common thread here, but I'm not quite sure I can place it.

The tribal system is the gayest fricking thing and I can't wait for a new generation to tear it a new one when it hits NSO

    >Dude what if you needed to find 100% of these furry Black folk to finish the game
    >But we don't actually tell you if there are any in the room
    >And you can accidentally kill them
    >And so can the enemies
    >Uh sure, I guess some of them can make noises to let you know they are there, but only some of them :^)
    >Oh and you have to get them all in one go
    >What do you mean we should at least remove the ones you've already found in the level
    >While we're on it, lets lock some of them behind different characters but not tell the players which character they actually need to find them
    >Oh, you missed one because you just went through the entire level but at the very end you realized the last Tribal is hidden behind a Lava field that only Juno can get to? Tough fricking luck, go through the level as Juno and get all of them again :^)

This statement is true for every console, though. Even whatever your favorite one is. For every good game, there’s some game that got shit out in a week and every console library is composed of mostly these kinds of games.

The N64 just gets it the worst because its entire library is only like 120 games.

  23. 6 months ago
    Anonymous

I have beaten about 350 NES/Famicom games, most of which were good, and there are still about 200 I have either played but not finished, or haven't played yet, that I'm interested into. So that's about 40% of the total games, which hardly makes for a, and I quote, "vast" percentage of the library, for one of the platforms always quoted as having the most shit.

So I think the real question is, do you actually enjoy video games, because it doesn't look like you do past maybe the most trendy titles, and do you know what you're talking about, as in did you actually play a large portion of those libraries to form those opinions, or are just repeating words you heard someone else say who repeated it from another person and so on.

I enjoy a lot of things accross many genres, games like Formula 1 Sensation, Astérix, GI Joe games, Jurassic Park, Ghost Lion, Maharaja , Mission Impossible, Motocross Champions, Falsion, Gyruss, The Magic of Scheherazade, Moai Kun, kung fu Heroes, Laser Invasion, Don Doko Don 2, Batman Returns, Super Robot Wars 2 etc etc those are all random picks but all are good games and probably not in many people's TOP 50

Even games like The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles or Crossfire, which are lesser games, are still not bad games per se, but the kind of games that get comments like "why would you play these instead of Castlevania or Contra" but that's what someone who only plays a dozen games per platform would say

  24. 6 months ago

There are some good points made through the thread, here are a couple of things no one said.
First of all, gaming had not one but two paradigm shifts.
One was because of ps2 and xbox, we all know about that.
Games became padded as hell to increase playtime and generally easier.
This alone created a huge disconnect between older and new players.
The other occurred during the last few years, the normalization of dlcs, loot boxes and predatory tactics, the rise of gaas shit. We have people on Ganker defending genshin and actively suggesting it over other games.
You may hate sony or nintendo as you want but gacha shit is really the bottom, for now at least.
There is also the emulation question.
Emulation is a godsend and I thank God everyday for that article I read by chance about bleem!, it changed my life.
I simply went online and started playing a few old games I missed. Sonic cd, mario 64, chrono cross (ewwww I know), supah metroid.
Today emulation is easier than ever yet people are strongly discouraged by trying it, there is nintendo literally reselling old roms and console warriors gladly buying them. I clearly remember some homosexual on Ganker shitting on emulation and gladly buying 3d all stars, he wasn't joking, he made multiple photos about that and posted those like he was some cool underrated hero.
So, all of this to say that in my opinion most of these homosexuals posting shit on /vr/ are console warriors slurping sony and nintendo wieners, gladly swallowing, buying their retro games on eshop and psn.
That is why there is also this hate towards sega gays or shmup players, they are mostly disillusioned and don't give a frick about greedy big corpos.

People have a completely skewed view on things due to internet culture, things like e-celebs focusing on the bad games and exagerating them for the views, or things like complete list of games, lists which put on the same pedestal a game that sold millions of copies, and a game with a 20k print that nobody had even heard of back then.
Guaranteed that anyone who says something like "90% of the library is trash" got his opinion influenced by such things and hasn't even played the 10% he's talking about, let alone 5%
