his motivation makes no fricking sense. They just wrote vague nonsense as an excuse for the thing on the box of the game to show up.

      >it's not poorly written, you just don't understand it!
      ah the classic cope argument

Gen 4 was truly the start of these games trying to be deep but coming off as pretentious

Emotions are what cause people to be evil thus start war and harm towards other, hence why Cyrus hates emotions. It's the same reason why stories like "I have no mouth and I must scream" are bullshit because the main plot is "AI is le evil and hates humans because it doesn't have emotions", even though you do need emotions to feel any sort of hate in the first place.
How are you fricking morons too braindead to comprehend a story made for a children's game that more than a decade old.

If you unironically think people start wars because “evil lul” then you have the mentality of a literal child.

They also start wars because of food and shit. Emotions can be troublesome for those in power, but it’s a necessary evil.

Are you implying that thinking and intelligence are inherently evil/flawed?
Bro the entire point of humanity is to overcome these base desires, whether that be through logic or emotions.

If we weren't intelligent enough to know what is morally evil, we wouldn't have any standards that would make us "evil". There'd be no need to "overcome these base desires" in the first place.

The whole point is that the villain is usually a dumbass hypocrite.
Cyrus is intrigued by willpower but despises conviction and emotion because it drives people to do moronic things, so he's using his own conviction and emotion to drive himself to do a moronic thing (remake the universe in his image) to fix that.
Lysandre despises the rich for not using their influence and power responsibly to let the world, people and Pokemon prosper, so he's deemed that if humanity at its greatest influential points can't do anything good, he needs to either commit human genocide or plunge the world in stasis so the world's innate beauties can be restored/preserved, but he's also only letting those very same rich bastards be the only ones that can survive his holocaust because Team Flare has an entry fee and various tiers of importance based on how rich and influential you are.

                >Lysandre thinks humanity already peaked

Now that I think about it
This came out just a year after the Star Wars prequel trilogy ended, and those movies had a lot of "emotion is bad emotion leads to anger to hate blah blah bottle them up" talk in them. GF probably riffed Cyrus off that

  18. 2 years ago

I interpreted him as finding emotions and probably life in general extremely painful. He feels so bad he'd rather everyone feel nothing just to get rid of that feeling. I mean I guess I'm extrapolating, but I feel like he makes more sense to me than most Pokemon villains. Plus he ultimately gets a version of what he wants in his ending, where he's in a simpler world with Giratina where the complications of life won't bother him and everyone else gets to keep their feelings.
