Place was a wonderland back in the 16 bit to early PS2 days. Rows upon rows of games and demo stations that took up a fourth of the store's floor space.
Went there last year and they have all the games in this tiny little space with little care for presentation at all.

There's a reason retailers and grocery stores have been quietly abandoning large cities, or at least certain neighborhoods in those cities. The media though only reports on the resulting "food deserts" that emerge in the wake of these pull outs without ever discussing the reason for them.

Have a racial knowledge tip on the house:
All clothes detergent is basically the same shit. Most people just get the cheap shit. Black people LOVE tide and they buy a shit ton of it and specifically it which is why it's always at an inflated price over the others. Despite this high price they still buy it (or in this case steal it). They love the smell/way it treats clothes for some reason. It's like how they scientifically designed grape soda to appeal to them too.

Its a cycle. The hispanics do under the table work for cash in hand, buy stolen household basic necessities from blacks for half price, the blacks take the money and buy drugs.

This entire underground black market is built entirely on there not being any cash in the register when the blacks rob the store.

          >hoax
Bruh, the media was like a whole month late on covering it, it'd make for a shit hoax if you stage something and wait a few weeks to a month or two to cover it.
Also, TikTok trends are all real; if there IS any hoax or shenanigans going on, it'd be someone faking the initial challenge as if it was real so that people would copy them and get sick or die.

what's even the point in best buy anymore? Everything is cheaper online.

The Black Friday sales are sometimes still pretty good. I got a L33T PRO GAMUR X controller from there, it was supposed to be $100 or something but I got it for $30. Had a lot of really cool functions for headsets plugged into it. The only issue I had with it was it developed severe stick drift after a year.

          [...]
I don't know if you guys are just exaggerating or just flat out lying, but the dozen or so Gamestops around me are all still normal game stops that sell video games. There's some floating kiosks now with action figures and funko pops and tabletop games that take up a bunch of floor space instead of the usual bargin bins, but it's still 3 of 4 walls full of games.

Nah, I still poke my head into the local Gamestop twice a year and sometimes go into the one near where my parents live when I visit them. Both stores have two of the four walls covered in merch, shirts, and other miscellaneous non-vidya shit, and both stores have three stands on the floor; only one has games.
Sucks because this started back when I lived with my parents in an area that had two Gamestops that were within rock-throwing distance of each other and a third game shop that was stuffed to the brim with games across all eras and accessories and Retroid-whatevers covering all the walls with great prices; people ignored it to go to the GS and the game store itself closed after a couple years while the GS stores slowly filled with Funko Pops.

You press a button and call a wagie to the aisle who unlocks the case for you to get what you want. I've seen cases like this in stores in my area for securing particularly high value and easily shop liftable items (like nicoret gum for example, costs a ton and easily slipped into a pocket) but never an entire aisle like that.

          Anonymous

It doesn't because all it leads to is customers waiting around until a rep comes over, unlocks it, and then hands them the item. The whole idea is that the customer is just going to get annoyed that if they need to do a big shop that they'll just do an online order and do pick up or delivery.
The bottom line is that stores don't want people in them in general anymore which is why every restaurant under the sun offers online ordering in some form so you can walk in, pick it up, and then get the hell out.

The expensive laundry detergents have the right Price to weight value and unless a measure like this is put into place, is easily stolen without causing any security tags to go off at the front door.

moron. they will scan your ID so the amount of stuff you can return this way is limited to like $500 a year, but they absolutely will do it. i did this for gray-market exchanges (buying brand new product from my company's store for 30% of the retail price) and then returned them to retailers for full store credit as they were just released and had never been on sale. between walmart, target, best buy, etc. you just spread out your returns and can rack up thousands per year in store credits.

i have managed to convince both a target and a best buy to take a return for a SKU that was in their system but they had never ordered.

Best Buy has already been doing that in a way. Their physical locations exist as warehouses, really. You order online and a driver delivers it to the store of your choice or to a store where another driver delivers it to you.
I'm almost positive the physical stores exist because they haven't discovered an economical way to sell appliances and televisions other than a physical location.

So what's the point of the store? For phone cables and appliances? Fricking why, what reason do I even have to go to Best buy more than once a year now, when I used to go every few weeks for a moive or vidya?

So many people don't even know we offer free shipping on TVs and always arrive in a fricking regular sized car saying "On you fit it in the back seats?". Fricking morons I swear.

I had gotten 500 dollars in gift cards to best buy as part of my holiday bonus from my job so I actually just got a new TV that I ordered online from Best Buy recently. Because it was 65" Best Buy arranged a scheduled delivery where their courier even carried it all the way into the room I was setting it up in my home. It was actually a really service I was surprised.

It's not really a surprise. I'd go to the local one about once a year and for like the last 10-15 years the entire movie section has gotten smaller and smaller. Clearly appliances, sound systems, and phones have all slowly taken that space. The TV section has maintained around the same amount of space

They didn't stop selling movies and vidya. They are removing EVERYTHING from displays and keeping everything in the back and placing cards where products would be.

They announced back in october 2023 that they'll be phasing out physical media sales and by the end of 2024 they will no longer carry or sell any physical media in store.

This is not a situation where

I work at best buy and let me tell you, they are hard focusing on two things now: Credit Cards and those best buy plus/total memberships. They don't care much about revenue from sales, as the store is judge mostly by those two things previously mentioned. They laid off a ton of people after the wuhan crap and official got rid of departments. Now everyone does everything, but some stores have people that focus on specific areas. Now we are dealing with instacart/roadie/doordash crap and those range from hispanics that can't speak English to pot smoking losers doing delivery orders and possibly stealing the deliveries. On top of this, coporate decided on offshoring 95% of call center operations to india/philippines so now you have people on the phone telling customers lies like "Oh yes I have the product in my hand just for you, just go to the store!" and then us saying that they didn't call the store, but off shore and dealing with that moronation. Total shit show and I am trying to leave for actual professional work, as I am one of the handful of non-manager people that have been in my store for longer than a year now.

Exactly. For $180 a year you get 60 day return periods and free geek squad coverage on anything that offers said coverage, so morons that break shit constantly can take advantage of that if they blow out their headphones or vacuums like three times a year. The plus is $50 a year and just offers the 60 day return period, which is pretty decent I guess, but I'm the type that knows what I want to keep pretty quickly. So basically, it is for morons that break everything or are always late on returning crap and need insurance just to function like a normal person.

Also, best buy is using third party a TON on appliance and home theater installations. Which pretty much means you have a 50% chance of third party even coming to the appointment, then another 50% chance of them even doing the job right. You want to have geek squad agents do you installs, but sometimes I literally have no choice but to do third party and praying that I am not going to get yelled at if they frick up. So I instruct people to go to Home Depot at this point for appliances.

damn bruh i knew about the credit cards, i was thinking of getting one at some point, but i didn't know about the membership stuff. if they're relying on people to be on finance, why not just become a rent-a-shop or rent-to-own at that point.

That is why they are letting people use those moronic "pay in 4 month" plans online. I just don't believe in credit cards unless you are buying a appliance or something more major.

PC physicals don't even really exist anymore.
          That's not just Best Buy.

True, I had to order my motherboard from amazon even though I work at best buy since we didn't even sell it online.

            >That is why they are letting people use those moronic "pay in 4 month" plans online.

i only use that with 0% APR, which amazon does. i've spent like $5,000 with those plans over the last 2-3 years and had no problems. unfortunately people aren't responsible enough and let all those $100 month plans snowball until they're suffocating. good thing i spent my formative years playing starcraft and warcraft 3, which really hammered in the concept of not spending what you don't have.

            >I just don't believe in credit cards unless you are buying a appliance or something more major.

fair enough but credit cards are keeping me alive right now, especially things like balance transfers. i'm glad i spent the last 8 years building up my credit and credit limits because i'd be fricked now with inflation.

The 0% interest if paid in 12-months type stuff is good for sure. Like you said though, some people just go fricking nuts and get into huge debt because they need a bunch of useless crap like airpod maxes.

there's still an opportunity cost though, those store cards that offer 0% financing also offer 5% cash back in place of the financing
so if you finance $3000 for a year you effectively paid $150 in interest just from opportunity cost

                Anonymous

are you moronic? instead of paying $3,000 all at once and financing for $200 a month, i'm able to use the $2800 for other things. not to mention that 5% gets swallowed up by inflation. it's better to have $3,000 debt then wait and buy the things later for $3,500.

Yeah, plenty of shit has been effectively erased forever as more places go down over the years. Total annihilation isn't the only way to win, slowly stomping the holdouts or waiting for them to die out as the users age with no new blood coming in is good enough for them.

every time they've "slowly stomped the holdouts" all it's ever done was create a new improved version of what came before. no more napster? 6 other p2p services popped up. p2p effectively snuffed out? torrents surfaced. public trackers stalked by dmca? private trackers or russian based ones like rutracker show up.

they never actually win, we literally just make it more complicated every since time for them to stop us. i have been on this planet for 33 years and i have owned literally everything for free and i have and will always be happy. i make it my hobby to subvert the subverters, and quietly. if i can get something free, with the overlords ultimately footing the bill as "acceptable losses", than i will. always.

nta that's a bit of a loaded question.
piracy is at the most rampant it's ever been HOWEVER, and this is the important part, it's the lowest it's ever been in terms of user:pirate ratio.

if the pirating rates of 2023 were in line with what they were in the napster/kazaa/p2p days and just beyond, it would be something like 10x what it currently is.
pirating, esecially in regards to video games / software, is a dying field. hell there's only like 3 legit crack makers left in the PC gaming space, and two of them are always 1 meltdown away from killing themselves.

yes, people will still pirate. it just will never be as widespread in terms of sheer proportion as it was back then. no, private trackers don't count as rampant

sounds like a pretty biased outlook if you ask me. i don't know a single person who doesn't pirate some shit in some form despite all the streaming services. you got anons here sharing cracks and shit. have an entire torrent board with threads for shit like porn, tv shows, movies, music, comics, onlyfans content, and no one fricking bats an eye. whole reddit communities about private trackers, mega caches, a whole site dedicated to watching out for cracks for new software and video games, several websites you can very readily access any new switch game that comes out in both .nsp and .xci format, people sharing plex server access with loads of shit to stream for free.

just because you don't personally see these things happening doesn't mean they're not happening.

Sure, but but what I loved about it was that back then you had to have 5 different gadgets to do 5 different things. And it was very sub-rosa, like just nerdy guys. Now it's all just the same 1 device that everyone has.

around 2008-2010 when jack thompson and the ESRB ratings were more strictly adhered to so i wasn't able to buy shit like GTA or bad company at gamestop. i had to go to some chinese guy running an electronics store that didn't give a frick so long as you had the cash, and would break streetdate all the time, if had the games in stock. i wonder who his supplier was, because the game discs, despite my fears, were legit and not bootlegs.

That's like a month after the game came out. That implies they've had that copy at the store for nearly a decade and they never bothered to change the sticker at all.

Gamestop barely resembles a game store anymore, It's nerd Hot Topic. They could drop selling physical games and still chug along by using the space for lego star wars and funko pops

It really is dire. You either get one that had barely a single wall for all their games or one with some retro games for fricking moronic internet prices. I've seen those frickers sell Phantom Hourglass for 50 bucks without the case or manuals.

Kek! Yeah, at all the Black folktops I've seen recently the front half of the store is loaded with t-shirts, coffee mugs, funkopops, posters, and maybe some Razer RGB PC GAYMURR shit.

It varies from store to store really. I went to the mall recently and the Gamestop there literally had one wall for all games. There are others that have a lot more shelf space for games, but are still packed to the brim with garbage shit collectables and clothing.

              Anonymous

Physical disks are a low margin product, gamestop makes like 5 dollars from every disk sold, that's why they aggressively shill pre-orders and memberships. It's also why they devalue new games by opening them and massively inflate the price of used games compared to what they pay for them, they want to blur the distinction so consumers are more likely to buy used copies from them where they do make a decent profit.

            Moose

            It depends on the store.

One that's about half an hour away from me literally has the entire back half of the store with toys, clothing, Funko Pops, and for some reason imported Tokusatsu toys. Everyone seems to love Golden Tiga/normal Tiga statues as well they're in seemingly every store. You will only find games along the opposite side of the wall and they have dozens of floating kiosks with nothing but merchandise. When I went the day after Christmas they had an entire section of a wall dedicated solely to Funko Pops.
One that's like ten minutes away from me in a strip mall is literally nothing but merchandise except for the used games on the walls which only take up half the wall space, not even all of it. 80% of the store is just merchandise with Pokemon card packs being a fairly significant portion of a wall.
One that's at a local mall is only merchandise in a very small section of the store and at the entrance only on the wall. The rest of it is games.
One that's like ten minutes away from that local mall is in the exact same situation as the one 30 minutes away from me but with a significantly smaller selection of merchandise.

It's going to be interesting because big malls and outdoor malls don't really have a place going forward because of such a strong shift to online shopping. Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of Ganker are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

Amazons same-day/next-day service has killed going to stores for me completely other than groceries.
Not only do you not have to pay the ridiciulous physical store markup, but you basically get it in as quick as you otherwise could short of stopping what you're doing and going to the store then.
Seriously I went to get some USB-C -> USB-A adapters and BB wanted 29.99$ for a 2 pack.

It feels like the whole world stalled out. Shit changed when I was a kid. Every few years something new came around that made me hopeful for the future just to see what is going to get invented and made next. Then just nothing. When something new does come around like VR it feels half made like they got bored with making it halfway through and just shoved it out the door with a sticker saying "Fix it yourself" on it. I remember fricking being amazed at the backlit screen on the gameboy and then the DS came out and then the 3DS came out. I was sure we would have full dive tech by the time I was out of college. You get what you deserve for abandoning physical media. Steam has been a net positive. The things most worth playing on Steam would never get a physical copy in the old system, and sale prices were historic, but continue to be well worth it today. Prices drop like a stone on most games, even if they're horrific blunders.
Computers were too well suited for digital media too quickly for this not to happen.

Because I use the store for video games and movies primarily?
      >Constantly has niche games.
      >Actually has deals with iam8bit and LRG so you get retail copies of their games or special editions exclusive to them like the Yarny doll for Unravel or the Meat Boy plush for SMB.
      >Has a significantly better selection than Gamestop of all places.
      >Games are constantly, and I mean CONSTANTLY, on sale for $20-40 sometimes weeks after release.
I got Hogwarts Legacy for $35 or something like that a month or two after release, Guardians of the Galaxy for $40 within the month of release, Like a Dragon: Ishin on PS5 maybe two or three months after release for $20, and a relative of mine picked up HL on PS4 for $30 when it just came out on PS4 like a month prior.
      >Their clearanced items are actually pretty nice and you tend to get a decent selection of rotating games unless you're on Switch, then it's MM11, Minecraft Legends, and Unravel 2 in perpetuity.
      >Amiibo selection is typically larger than Gamestop until fairly recently where it's just been Metroid Dread and Splatoon 2 boys they couldn't sell.
      >Exclusive steelbooks and items that you can get even without pre-ordering.
      >Bluray section is fantastic and they somehow get every single Millcreek release so I was able to buy stuff like Ultraman sets from there for cheaper than from Millcreek itself.

It's pretty much the first store I check outside of Amazon when I want to get something, and 99% of Slickdeals deals are straight from Best Buy due to how often they do them.

We have reached the point where the only place to buy physical vidya is FRICKING GAMESTOP.

Walmart and other big stores still sell physical games, often with better selections than gamestop.

      Moose

Walmart, Target, and Amazon are both the best places to get them outside of Best Buy. Target even has a pretty great clearance section and sales but not a big selection of stuff. They also have the Fire Emblem Three Houses musou and Bayonetta Origins on sale in perpetuity, it's crazy how none of their stores can get rid of them even at $20.

We don't have Micro Centers where I live, and Fry's/Radio Shack are long gone, so if Best Buy were smart they'd use the space to stock more PC/electronic components and parts/accessories and try to fill that void. But they're not smart. They're going to cram a bunch of toys and useless knickknack bullshit in there instead. They're already doing it at the one near me.

because a music festival is an experience with lifelong memories and movies come to streaming like 2 months after they hit theaters, and those are the mega blockbusters, the other shit is like 2 weeks.

There needs to be somewhere to buy physical games and Gamestop is literally the only option in most places.

I worked at Electronics Boutique before during and after the GameStop buyout. I witnessed a dramatic shift in store policies and the types of upper managers in the nearly six years I was working there. I was told near the end of my tenure that I was "making too much" in my position as an ASM as I got my position, promotion, and wage while I was at EB. Apparently GameStop was paying their ASMs close to minimum wage because they could get away with it as video game retail never had a lack of people wanting to work there. I was eventually fired with no notice after I returned from a paid vacation. Their reason: I had accidentally broke street date on Microsoft Flight Simulator X. I wasn't the only one though. A bunch of people made that mistake because it had not been labeled as street dated and arrived in a box full of restock items.

I miss those days working at EB. It was good times.

the EB game shops closed around my area like 10 years ago or so, when gamestop was taking over. sorry to hear about the corporate fricking you over. how much were you making that was "too much"? genuinely curious. i was watching one of the pirate software shorts on youtube, that homie was making like $12/hr in southern california 2012 or so working at blizzard. i don't blame people for thinking communism is preferable at this point.

It was a long time ago, but I think I was making $14/hour back then. FFXII was just coming out as was the Wii. To add insult to injury they canceled my Wii preorder as well. I wasn't able to get one until about six months later when the manager from another store I was on good terms with held one under the counter for me.

They do pretty good PC component deals. It's quite an experience just wandering through and looking at the electronics/DIY areas and the 3D printers. There's the expected TV, Monitor, PC and Laptop area as well.

They already have in my area. All their movies, shows, etc. are gone. They have one small kiosk for games. Everything else are appliances that don't even have any information on them. You have to use your phone and scan the QR codes. This shit is depressing.

Best buy used to have a pretty good deal, where you could preorder new games for 20% off. Last purchased a special edition of Xenoblade X from them.

A couple months back, I decided to drop in after an appointment, to look at monitors and tvs in person. And was surprised at how absolutely -derelict- it was. The main front of the store looked like a section of their back warehouse. Only 2 outdated monitors on display, and a small section for sportsball TVs that was just surrounded by boxes with noticeable wear on them, and made it all feel claustrophobic and grimy.

The mall it's tied too isn't in a better state. Every stall owned by surly, middle aged Indians that look miserable to be there. Stores noticeably dirty, stocking the cheapest crap sold at insane prices. English is a secondary language. The Hot Topic is gone.

The world is a darker place.

People talk shit about bestbuy, but i always find the best deals there. Appliances, tvs, laptops. They have shit return policy though but i usually save $100-200 buying big ticket items from there. I saved $500 on my washer/dryer from Bestbuy compared to lowes/home Depot which were 2nd cheapest compared to multiple other stores.

I miss the days when something could just be an unknown that came from no where. I loved talking to my friends about games I liked and have them look me in the eyes and say "That game does not exist." and then whipping it out and playing multiplayer for 12 hours straight. I loved talking to people about how to do things and being amazed at what they found because I would just never think of doing what they did. Nowadays everything is advertised and datamined and there is just no mystery anymore.

People are property and investments. If it's not their kid, it's not their problem. The only consideration is the legal liability. "If I touch this kid to bring him out of the water, does it open me up to litigation?"

    >Physical media is anti-semitic

Seriously though, I hope you're ready for the shift.
With physical games for consoles/PC you could easily get them for like 10-15 bucks. It was like a Steam Sale but better and not time-limited.
I got DOOM Eternal for like 10€ like a year after release. Of course there was no disc, just a key to activate in the Zenimax launcher or whatever it was called.
Soon, you're lucky if you can get that 10 year old game for 20-30€ when it's on sale in the digital store
