If they leave the console market entirely they'll probably be allowed to make more acquisitions and if they want to be the Netflix of gaming then owning all the publishers is the best way to do that to prevent other publishers from abandoning Game Pass to make their own services instead, like what happened to video streaming.

It kind of explains the absolute fire sale that happened for Series X consoles this holiday season. $350 with Diablo 4 included was an insane deal. It was 1 last way to try to get people into the ecosystem before this major change happened and if that didn't even move the needle then it proved to them that they need to port games off the system if they want to make back the 70 billion they spent on ActiBlizz.
If Starfield really made more money via Steam than via GP then offering games at $70 on other devices while being "free" with GP might be their goal. You buy an Xbox to save money and Microsoft continues to make money regardless of what happens and it gets people playing all their games in case they want to go subscription only in the future. HFR is a good game that many haven't played, putting it on every device suddenly makes a GP only release of HFR2 look appealing to people that would have otherwise not cared about it because they didn't play it.
Also, if I was Microsoft and I heard that Valve was planning to launch a console type device I'd probably throw in the towel and go third party on the spot. What the frick do they do then? All their console exclusives would now be on a competing console day 1 anyway but if they don't release games on Steam, they lose all of their PC sales.

The way to turn things around should be to focus on a different approach to the content or type of inherent qualities to the games they produce and promote compared to what Sony focus on, and to match the features of their console with Sony's. So the first step that was leaked was the "immersive controller" and that matches the features somewhat, but the content they produce needs to have a different appeal than the realistic moviegame style and, like Bob Iger admitted in Disney's case, they could even consider toning down on "entertainment for the sake of messaging" and be honest about making stuff that is appealing and people care about. People have already heard the ESG messaging, beating it into people's heads isn't going to get them to actually care. They could even target a niche like "cute or colorful style western made bigger budget games" and provide for it consistently. There was a deliberate attempt by Nintendo in the first years of the switch to target the people enthusiastic about Anime girls and sex appeal (there was an article from the WSJ about Nights of Azure 2 that I remember, and they distributed SNK Heroines. Heck they were the ones who announced the Tomb Raider remasters recently. So that honestly is an approach to take too, to enthusiastically promote western made games with sex appeal again. However, if the leadership isn't comfortable with that I'd personally want them to produce and promote classic Rare style games.

So Sony won't allow gamepass. Nintendo might but might not. Either way the console market proper is in Sonys hands. They'll pick up an extra 20m sales that would have otherwise been xbox buyers.
They then can't sell gamepass on console. They also won't sell some franchises, like Forza, on Playstation either. It won't compete with GT.
So what the frick are they doing. What is their plan here? What is the win condition if they lose 20m gamepass subs?

They want people to buy games instead of using GP. GP exists to get people on Xbox and then have them buy games at full price. But no one is buying Xboxes so they need to port to PS5 and Switch.
I'm pretty sure that Sony would allow GP on the device if Microsoft removed the third party games and just offered their first party games on it. But outside of that, it's no different than what Microsoft is currently doing with Steam. PC GP exists but if people want to give them $70 instead of $1 or 10 then they will let them.
The Series S/X are on track to do worse than the Xbox One did despite the incredibly aggressive pricing, maybe they're just giving up and instead of being the last place console manufacturer that has to waste billions on subsidizing games to make GP appealing, they're looking to become the biggest third party publisher. Also think about the environment that they've cultivated on Xbox, it's the poorgay device. Which means they're probably not even bringing in tons of money from MTX because their consumers spend less to begin with thanks to things like GP existing.

No one hates Xbox consoles more than Phil Spencer purely from an objectivity point of view when compared to X360 Peter Moore and Xbone Don Mattrick. Even the Xbone was more popular, Series consoles sales collapsed at liquidation sales in the hottest gaming season again the PS5 movie games and Switch's 7th year in the market.
Microsoft will own Sony by 2030 if Sony lets MS on their console.
