As a previous anon said, it only ran for four volumes during Pokemania in the late 90s while it was only loosely adapting the Kanto seasons of the Pokemon anime, while PokeSpe has been continuously running for the past 25+ years.
My personal belief on why it's not as discussed as much is the same reasons that Pokemon manga has with the same issue. The other Pokemon media (cards, games, anime) had the advantage of mass advertising to the public at the time, so that's what stuck in the public consciousness up to this day. For the anime specifically, it seems to be a lot more accessible to be able to catch up with its episodic format that runs weekly at minimum, than awaiting for months or years for the next manga release to be accessible at the bookstore.
Another factor to consider is that VIZ was, and still is terrible, at managing their Pokemon manga compared to other publishers. No promotions/advertisement, no care for timely (or well-cared for) translations, and a habit of suppressing scanlations online (ie: shit like sending C&Ds to scanlator groups throughout the 2000s) will generally hinder the growth of a lively manga scene.
It's just a matter of both exposure and accessibility, and Pokemon manga has neither compared to the other major parts of Pokemon; and within Pokemon manga, non-PokeSpe manga has the same issue but compounded.
i think it comes from the fact that when you have a more joyfulshonen style any contrast of something "darker" will jump out more and make it more standout and marking
in berserk the darkness is omnipresent and you don't question it, in pokemon any semblance of darkness weight more due to the setting being the opposite
