the xperia play, by all metrics, was INSANELY successful and profitable for sony-ericcsson, but they didn't make a new one because people wanted thinner phones, and there's an inherent thickness required to:
      >A:
      have a slider
      >B:
      have physical controls/buttons.
It just wasn't viable in the way the marketplace shifted for mobile. NOWADAYS they could probably do it, but they'd have to beg and pray that mobage devs support their controllers.

I had a lot of fun with my vita but around 2021 or so I just fell out of love with it, most of the games I played on it ended up getting ported elsewhere, a lot of games got shut down or EoL notices, like freedom wars, SS/D, basically the few multiplayer games that managed to stay alive.
I played a LOT of ports/multiplats on it, things like berserk band of the hawk, when you overclocked, would run at a pretty stable 30fps only dropping in some later stages (eclipse particularly). Attack on Titan 2 was INSANELY fun on it, but it never got an eng translation, nor final battle expansion.
Just a completely mismanaged thing in the west, I think the west completely dropped support for it because of the piracy-heavy legacy of the PSP, and japan moved on from it very fast because the 3DS was, well, the 3DS. It was desigend for the jap market. Sony tried with NEAR but it couldn't match streetpass and shit.

            Anonymous

Yeah. Nobody made a specific GBA emulator for vita with ANY degree of optimization, so your best bet is loading up PSP via adrenaline, then using gpsp-kai (or another variant for specific titles, but kai plays mother 3 and ff6.)
It's gotten slightly better in the last 3 or 4 years as mGBA apps have shown up but they still have lots of issues running specific titles, that don't exist when running through adrenaline.

              Anonymous

If you're going to be using gpSP anyway you should be using the native RetroArch core. It also has the advantage of not being frozen in time in terms of compatibility.

FRICK no. Do you know how much overhead retroarch vita has?

                Anonymous

What extra power? Any extra power it has is completely unutilized because the retroarch client on vita sucks up so many resources and is so poorly optimized it runs WORSE than something run through the PSP mode.

                Anonymous

                >sucks up so many resources and is so poorly optimized it runs WORSE
                Surely numbers exist for this.

                Anonymous

The numbers are the lack of updates for the retroarch vita client, and literally every recommendation for GBA to use GPSP via adrenaline.
Retroarch vita was so bad people ported over mGBA, but it STILL runs worse for select games.
The amount of effort and optimization that went into the PSP homebrew emulators is beyond anything the vita ever got, it having extra power doesn't mean it will run better.
                see:any modern AAA game.

Yeah, as long as you enjoy playing on portable consoles. You can play pretty much anything from psp,ps1,gameboy,sega cd, snes and nes and also there are some god tier ports for vita, like gta trilogy and super mario 64+60fps patch. Call it nostalgia, but I prefer to play snes, gba and ps1 games on a handheld device for some reason, and this is why I still use my vita to this day.

Honestly Vita is peak of the handhelds.
Its powerful enough to play pretty demanding(for a handheld) games and yet small enough to fit in the pocket and could be used while on the go.
Switch is pretty huge compared to vita. Like just the screen part alone is pretty much the same size. No idea about the lite ver tho.
Sadly the vita needed better game library and the mem cards were a curse.

The PSP was easy to emulate and hack and it sold millions, an SD slot would make more people buy the console, hence giving Sony more reason to support and that would lead to them making squillions

            Anonymous

but why make squillions when you can lose trillions

The PSP was released in an economic period where data infrastructure wasn't prone to hacking attacks as much then, compared to the advent of the Vita. I think the main reason they were adamant on the Sony SD Cards is that even if it they made squillions with it being hackable, they would lose wigglions.

The biggest flaw of the Vita is that the best version has a shitty proprietary charger. I'm too old to use anything else but USB C for charging.

I would not even recommend a Deck. It's like three times the size of Vita. But yes, it all boils down to price. For its price, Vita was a steal. I bought mine for like 150€ brand new. A handheld PC will cost you atleast 600€. But then you save on everything else because since it's PC you never need to buy a game on it if you don't want to.

Iirc a recent update to fix online stuff basically doubled the resources required to play the game and now the vita can't run it and he doesn't give a frick because he has a gorillion dollars and literally 0 incentive to update the vita version

I just play it on Switch. Vita is just Switch with a more soulful menu and better retro library.

Also love it. Some really unique experiences with the games made specifically for it's camera, motion, or augmented reality controls.
