Old ones had a pretty self explanatory design: fire type is a dragon because dragons are associated with fire, water type is a tortoise because they live in water, grass type has a giant ass flower on its back. Compare that to modern starters, fire types are cute red/orange animals that evolve into humanoid red/orange animals, water types are cute blue animals that evolve into blue humanoid animals, grass starers are cute green/brown animals that evolve into humanoid green/brown animals. There are exceptions, of course, but starter designs are just trash now.
