I always thought it was dumb that the “good” ending is obtained by basically speedrunning the game. From a gameplay standpoint, happier endings should require more effort. Yet in SH2, Maria is the ending that requires the most legwork, and yet it’s by far the darkest ending.

SH2 is the same gameplay-wise, closer to 1 though. 90% of people who shit on it here (admittedly just like most people on the internet who praise it lmao) have never even touched it and do this to fit in because it's the most popular entry. If you like 1 and 3 you will definitely at least enjoy 2

SH3 doesn't have an overworld though, it's mostly level-based. Like there is one dungeon after the other. 2 is pseudo open-world like 1
SH1 is more open world than Reddit Hill 2 and it does have actual optional/hidden stuff to uncover unlike Reddit Hill 2 (except for the usual few health/ammo items here and there and that meme KYS message on the wall)
in Reddit Hill 2 it really isn't different from the short time you get to go around SH town in 3
in both games you walk through the overworld to go from a level A to level B, the difference is in Reddit Hill 2 it takes longer to do so

As a game it's weaker than 3. The atmosphere is immaculate but it's cramped hallways: the game and enemies have no real teeth. The hallway thing might sound like a hollow criticism but 1 and 3 really do give you noticeably more space to work with in regards to avoiding enemies. You can see why they don't do that more in 2 - the enemies are more aesthetic than functional, and can be avoided in the town while asleep. I don't recommend playing on hard either, it clearly wasn't playtested and randomly has the most unnatural, unfun difficulty spikes that ultimately just waste your time. 90% of it is "better than Normal", but the remaining 10% comes down to cheesy exploits that you'll basically have to look up.
