What do you think of game companies dabbling with FPGA? For example Sega could make a Saturn mini like this, or Nintendo could put an FPGA chip in their next console for running older games.

It was literally just a custom case for a MiSTer.

That doesn't erase how shitty the retron line has been this whole time, in fact this makes it almost worse since hyperkin's track record with knock-off clones is really, really bad.

hyperkin is kind of a shit company that pumps out clone slop but i do like the NES controller they made with the rounded backs.

Cheap junk by a Chinese shell company. How did they even get in? They were also showing off a Ryzen-powered device that was emulating a non-retro handheld, showing off first-party Nintendo games.

Incredible! It can finally do what my real Saturn could do since 1995 and what emulators could do since 2009.

LOL. Saturn emulation is just now becoming decent, frick off with your early 2000s.

For PC sure. But looking at Raspberry pi 4 level hardware, Saturn emulation doesn't look good right now. Like watching Virtua Fighter 2 footage posted a month ago and the game looks like it is running at 30fps. Maybe Orange Pi and others could do it better? Maybe FPGA is better at this current time frame?

Maybe it was a pitch to Sega to see if they would bite? Looks neat though, it seems like Sega Saturn FPGA has been making some real progress.

It seems to be doing a bit better than SBC emulation (at least from the last time I looked, it does).

      >Maybe it was a pitch to Sega to see if they would bite?
I believe that is probably the case. Sega has publicly stated multiple times that they would like to make a Saturn mini but each time they said it wouldn't be possible. I believe Sega was actually saying "we want to do it, but we need help". Now, this company seems to be trying to say "let's do it" to Sega. As exciting as it is to see new game announcements, TGS is a trade show and I have no doubts that Sega probably saw this thing which will lead to talks behind closed doors.

This may just be a Mister in a custom case, but large company could just as easily develop custom hardware using a cheap FPGA chip that can handle. If these guys were backed by Sega then I think we could absolutely see an affordable FPGA mini console walk out the doors in the future. And if that happens, most likely it will become the new point of entry for FPGA emulation as it will be easier and more affordable for normies to hack one of those than it would be for them to set up a Mister. This could lead to something very exciting, or it could just as well lead to nothing.

Tassei Denki were throwing a lot of shit at the wall at TGS. Here's a prototype device with two 6" 1080p 90Hz screens for 3DS emulation.

      Hey, that's actually pretty neat.

Yeah, considering that Sega has made some public announcements that they are interested in Sega Saturn Mini console, but doesn't know ho to go about doing it, makes it seem like they are giving Sega a little nudge with this prototype. Sega likes to source their hardware from Japanese companies. ZUIKI provided the Genesis Mini 1 and 2 chipsets.

At the moment Zuiki seem to be busy with their $900 X68000 emulator. Sega would absolutely be doing themselves a favor to shop around.

I mean, here's a video of an Orange Pi 5 running VF2 emulation on Retroarch:

          ?t=1031

The Orange Pi 5 is pretty powerful for a SBC. Higher specced than a pi 4.

Retropie / Retroarch doesn't have the best performing Saturn emulation but it should still run fine on higher end hardware. Mednafen Saturn emulation is faster emulation on slower/ older hardware in general. SSF does have good performance too. I am pretty sure Retro Pi Saturn emulation is not perfect on a RP4, even when overclocked. Orange Pi 5 and other higher specced SBC boards can do it better. Could M2 make a better emulator on pi 4 specs? SBC Saturn emulation always looked dicey to me.

More affordable FPGA chips aren’t good enough to run the Saturn core, or even the current Megadrive core now it’s built from decapped info. They only reason the particular variant of the FPGA on the MiSTer isn’t much more expensive is because of Intel subsidising the board, if it wasn’t for that MiSTer wouldn’t have happened. A much cheaper, entry level FPGA console that could play everything MiSTer currently does isn’t possible and won’t be for a long time.

          >or even the current Megadrive core now it’s built from decapped info.
The sidi is too weak for the new Megadrive core? I have never seen anyone on /vr/ post proof they own one but it looks kind of cool for the price.

The new core is using about 85% of the DE-10’s logic, that isn’t happening on the Sidi’s Cyclone IV.

Why would Retron bother showing off a custom MiSTer case that they aren't even selling...?

      >Why would Retron bother showing off a custom MiSTer case that they aren't even selling...?

If you look at the top of that message, it has a logo for this company called Tassei:
      https://www.tasseidenki.co.jp/

And that group commissioned Retron to make a custom case/ board(?) based on the Saturn from their specifications. So this is not Retron directly.

If it was just to get people talking about them, it definitely worked. The 3DS variant is far weirder though, it has to just be playing video clips or something.

For a system that's supposed to play the games from only one actual console, the only way an FPGA would make sense over just manufacturing a clone chip is if either it's very very low volume product or if the simulation of the chip is shit so they need constant updates
