Reality check: weapon balancing doesn't sell and doesn't make a game fun. We lifers may like it, but for casuals, it's more exciting to figure out what weapon is the most powerful and to leverage it in the rest of the game. It's as good as a clever easter egg. >I get it now! Use the metal blade! This is awesome!
Very few of the most popular single-player games were well-balanced.
It's been 20 years since I played this. >Bubble Man = Metal Man weapon >Air Man = Wind Man weapon >Quick Man = Crash Man weapon >Heat Man = Bubble Man weapon >Wood Man = Metal Man weapon >Metal Man = ??? (I always beat him first) >Flash Man = Heat Man weapon >Crash Man = Air Man weapon
What did I get wrong?
Yeah, four of the robot masters are specifically weak to Metal Blades, with three being immune and only one taking base damage.
It's very effective against Wood Man, but his main weakness is the Atomic Fire.
Metal Man is famously one or two-shot using his own Metal Blades against him, but his proper weakness is the Quick Boomerang. It's not a good strategy though due to the way Metal Man will leap to the opposite side of the room if you approach him, and he's easy enough to defeat with the Mega Buster with some jumpan' and shootan'
You can also use Air Shooter to bypass Wood Man's shield, from what I remember.
Quick Man and Flash Man are some of the worst bosses in the franchise. Wood Man fricking sucks. The Wily stage with the wall boss sucks. The slippery controls from MM1 aren't gone yet.
MM2 is horribly overrated and hyped up from that late 00's online vidya youtuber boom.
MM2 isn't the best game, but it didn't just get praise from Youtubers, it was beloved before Youtube even existed because it's just a rather appealing and memorable entry, despite it's issues.
Heat Man, Quick Man, Air Man and Crash Man are immune to the Metal Blade, all of the other 4 have varying degrees of weakness to it, even if it isn’t their primary one.
>Bubble Man
Okay stage and boss. >Air Man
Mediocre stage, shitty boss. >Quick Man
Mediocre stage and terrible boss. >Heat Man
Mediocre stage and you'll skip half of it, braindead boss. >Wood Man
Good stage, shitty boss. >Metal Man
Okay stage and boss. >Flash Man
Mediocre stage and boss.
Crash Man >Mediocre stage and okay boss.
MM2 is so overrated that it's not even funny.
*Blocks your path*
Reminder that using a CrashBomb against HeatMan fully heals him
It at least has the courtesy to not respawn any of the gates or traps you destroyed.
You however have to farm weapon energy from those Sniper Armors, if you run out of Crash Bomb or Item 1/2/3 energy.
>Bubble Man
Okay stage and boss. >Air Man
Mediocre stage, shitty boss. >Quick Man
Mediocre stage and terrible boss. >Heat Man

Crash Man >Mediocre stage and okay boss.
Y'all know that Mega Man VI is the best one.
Also can we just talk about how great the title screens for these games are? V has Proto Man's scarf and II has iconic skyscraper shot but VI's gotta be the coolest: it has the fricking planet front and center, It's like the game is telling you that this time "shit's gonna get real".
I know these are kid's games but frick me if didn't love them when I first played them
Crash Man's music counterbalances the majority of the game's ills. The rest of the music more than makes up for the remainder. Finally, Heat Man is cute. For these reasons, this is undeniably a good game.
I love Crash Man's theme as he was the first robot master I ever picked in an MM game so it almost feels like the standard in my brain. Interesting though also how his theme is the only one that was kept from the original batch, with every other theme being replaced when they told the composer to make the music "cooler" or whatever.
What's everyone think of the boss order/weapon weaknesses from each of the 6 NES games? I actually like how chaotic 2 is when it comes to that, gives more variety in play. It's all over the place. You have multiple secondary and even tertiary weaknesses, a guy who can be killed in one or two hits from his own weapon, multiple immunities, some bosses even being healed from certain weapons, a weapon that isn't even meant to do damage taking off half of a boss's life, etc. None of the other games have this level of insanity. 3 is decent in that it has two separate cycles and they aren't even the same size (5 vs 3 instead of a more symmetrical 4 vs 4). 1 is very basic but I think it's fitting being the first game, and it's the only game where I feel you can easily make sense of each weakness although that's made easier by the fact that the themes are the most basic. 4-6 bring it back to a basic one cycle and I don't remember much in the way of secondary weaknesses or immunities.
Quick Man and Flash Man are some of the worst bosses in the franchise. Wood Man fricking sucks. The Wily stage with the wall boss sucks. The slippery controls from MM1 aren't gone yet.
MM2 is horribly overrated and hyped up from that late 00's online vidya youtuber boom.
>late 00's online vidya youtuber boom.
Do you twenty-somethings have any idea how silly you sound when you say things like that? Jesus Christ. I played this game in 1992. Whatever influencers you're so eager to distance yourself from aren't even on my radar.
nobody who casually uses the word "vidya", or any other similarly memey Ganker-style slang (such as "muh" or "s0i"), can be trusted to possess self-awareness
It's bizarre. I saw a guy unironically argue that MM9 used retro graphics and took out dash and charge... because of MM2's popularity on YouTube.
Big shock, he turned out to be a zoomer.
Isn't that straight up what Capcom and Inti Creates said themselves?
The 8bit minigame in Mega Man ZX Advent (called "Mega Man a") was Capcom testing the waters for an NES style successor title on the DS, but opted against it because the 256x192 screen resolution would've been inauthentic to the NES's 256x224 (visible) / 256x240 (internal) resolution.
I swear I remember reading an article about this somewhere, but I've not got time to find it right now.
It's an unlockable minigame in ZX Advent.
It's a three-stage minigame with each of the stages being locked behind being easy, normal, and hard mode (the minigame ends at the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd boss encounter accordingly).
It's there in the Zero and ZX Legacy Collection too.
It's also an unlockable Biometal in the main game as a reward for earning all 24 boss medals from the 8 pseudoroid bosses, which are bronze, silver, and gold victory conditions involving restrictions.
>MM2 is horribly overrated and hyped up from that late 00's online vidya youtuber boom.
Nah, it was hugely popular from the day it dropped and none of the other NES Mega Mans ever came close to having the same street cred. The only other ones that were even on the map were 1 and 3. it's not revisionism. If anything it's understated how popular it actually was. It's not revisionism.
Anyone here besides me know about and/or tried these Classic-X Era Megaman mods and hacks: >Megaman Alpha (hack of Megaman 1) >Megaman The New Lands (also a hack of Megaman 1, and like the OG Megaman 1 and Alpha, the select button pause is still there. Plus all new Robot Masters) >Megaman X3 Zero project v3, where not only is Zero simply more able to access bosses and the Black Armor, but also passwords have been replaced with SRAM save system. >Megaman 3- The Rise and Fall of Dr. Wily.
Umm... Heat Man's level exists.
So does item-2
Level design is unironically better in Mega Man 1.
so is weapon balancing
Of course, 6 is an even number, 8 is odd.

Eh, the Quick Man stage may be a bit triggering for people accustomed to 21st century design philosophy. Not that it isn't fun or anything.
It's been 20 years since I played this.
>Bubble Man = Metal Man weapon
>Air Man = Wind Man weapon

>Heat Man = Bubble Man weapon
>Wood Man = Metal Man weapon
>Metal Man = ??? (I always beat him first)
>Flash Man = Heat Man weapon
>Crash Man = Air Man weapon
What did I get wrong?
Metal Man is also weak against Metal Man's weapon (almost every robot master is to the point where I don't actually remember which ones AREN'T)
Quick beats Metal.
Metal beats Flash.
Metal beats almost everything.
In the Dr. Wily stages, Metal one-shots Metal.
Fully-charged Heat one-shots Wood.
So Metal is only officially for Bubble and Quick? I always used it on at least half of the bosses.
>Mega Buster
Plasma Cannon 🙂
So that's what the P stands for.
Yeah, Mega Buster is introduced in Mega Man 4, it has the charging capability.
Who the frick is Wind Man?
Me. Keep it a secret
Heat Man, Quick Man, Air Man and Crash Man are immune to the Metal Blade, all of the other 4 have varying degrees of weakness to it, even if it isn’t their primary one.
Reminder that using a CrashBomb against HeatMan fully heals him
>Wind Man weapon
Goddamn rom hack players
Frick the Boobeam Machine in Wily stage 4, worst boss in the series.
It at least has the courtesy to not respawn any of the gates or traps you destroyed.

Ohhh Reginallll!!! I DISAGREE

>Mega Man VI is the best one.
Almost, after IV.
This was my first Mega Man game. Imagine my surprise going from that amazing jetpack to finding out the dog normally turns into a sled.
Best jetpack in gaming, it's a shame they never brought it back.
It's in 7, but it works differently. And Bass has his own version in 10.
Crash Man's music counterbalances the majority of the game's ills. The rest of the music more than makes up for the remainder. Finally, Heat Man is cute. For these reasons, this is undeniably a good game.

I'm in the minority, I played mm2 on nes but I didn't get into it until I got mm8 on PlayStation. I still love that game

>MM2 is horribly overrated and hyped up from that late 00's online vidya youtuber boom.

Why the frick did I say that twice? Must be moronic.

best megamane for me
What are your favorite Megaman game mods and hacks?
Crash Man's stage sucks. Have fun with those ladders. Also Wily's Fortress whichever one has the Boobeam Trap (I think it's the fourth one).
If you think everything is good it means you have no standards
Air Man, Wood Man, Heat man and Bubble man levels, all shit. Wily Stages, every one is garbage.
