I've never really played a vn. Closest is maybe Ace Attorney or Sakura Wars. What should I play?
I always recommend Saya No Uta or Narcissu since they're both short
Play Utawarerumono, it's really good and there is some actual gameplay.

Muv Luv is genuienly garbage. Alternative was not worth the torture that was Extra and Unlimited.

I don't know about best, since the quality depends heavily on the chapter, but Subahibi is definitely my favorite.
Worst I've played is Grisaia, but it was redeemed by Michiru, who's the best girl in anything anime ever.

Rance isn't a visual novel. It's a series of RPG/Strategy that only get called VNs because they have porn in them.

Steins;Gate is too silly to get as serious as it does in the second half. It isn't bad, but it's had to take the story seriously when it's about a bunch of chuunis doing dumb stuff with a microwave.

Subahibi isn't good because of the philosophy references, it's good because of Takuji. If you liked S;G, you should get this. He's a funnier Rintarou with less morals and more schizo.

The worst is probably Clannad. That series is hard carried by nostalgia/people who watched it as their first serious anime.

i'd say muramasa is the best, partly because of the prose so it's probably not the same result if you read the translation
